Systematic review of microplastic concentrations in water and fish: Modelling distribution patterns and transport dynamics across the Mediterranean Sea.

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive marine contaminants, yet Mediterranean-scale assessments remain constrained by fragmented spatial coverage, inconsistent metrics, and limited integration between observations and transport processes. Here, we combine a harmonised systematic review of MP concentrations in surface waters and fish with basin-scale Lagrangian particle tracking to resolve distribution patterns, connectivity, and exposure pathways across Mediterranean Geographical Sub-Areas (GSAs). From 591 screened records (2012-2026), 108 empirical studies met strict inclusion criteria. Concentrat

A new approach for predicting the fate of micropollutants in activated sludge wastewater treatment.

The current understanding of activated sludge conditions and configurations that favour the removal of micropollutants (MPs) is equivocal. This study conducted a series of activated sludge process trials using pilot-scale reactors and a synthetic feedstock, to achieve controlled and representative conditions. The fate of ten perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), four brominated flame retardants, two triazoles, three pharmaceuticals, three bio-/pesticides, one phthalate, one nonylphenol and four metals was studied with three levels of mixed liquor suspended solids (1-3 g/L), three redox configurati

Mechanistic insights into electrolyte-PFAS interfacial interactions through molecular simulations and experimental observations.

Understanding how electrolytes modulate the interfacial behavior of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is critical for predicting their environmental fate and guiding remediation strategies. In this study, we systematically investigated the surface activity and interfacial partitioning of four PFAS regulated in U.S. and European drinking water standards, along with a C4 PFAS, in the presence of eight inorganic salts representing diverse cationic and anionic identities. Surface tension results were modeled using the Szyszkowski equation, extended with mean ionic activity (a*) to unify e

Evaluating the efficacy and specificity of PVPP for phenolic compound removal from natural organic matter.

Experimental tests of the enzyme latch hypothesis frequently rely on the removal of phenolic compounds using the phenol binding agent polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), yet the extent to which PVP-based approaches alter the composition of the broader dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool remains poorly constrained. Here, we evaluated the selectivity of solid phase polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) using Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA) as a highly characterized representative DOM standard and, for the first time, combined bulk measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and phenolic removal with Four

Effects of hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid and dimer acid on acute and chronic toxicity, bioconcentration, and oxidative damage in Oryzias melastigma.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a persistent global contaminant. As regulations on legacy compounds such as perfluorooctanoic acid tighten, hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) and dimer acid (HFPO-DA) have emerged as primary alternatives. This study comprehensively evaluated the acute toxicity, tissue bioconcentration, and oxidative stress mechanisms of these two emerging alternatives using Oryzias melastigma as a model organism. Acute toxicity assays demonstrated that HFPO-TA is significantly more lethal than HFPO-DA. The 96-hr median lethal concentration for HFPO-TA (130

Aeration-Driven Dynamics and Compositional Transformation of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Surface Water Containing Microplastics and Microalgae.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a key indicator of water quality, shaped by biological activity and anthropogenic inputs, including microalgal metabolism and microplastic degradation. This study investigated DOC dynamics and compositional changes in Surabaya River surface water during a 30-day aeration experiment. In the surface water-algal (SWA) and surface water-microplastic (SWP) systems, DOC concentrations after aeration reached 18.78 and 22.75 ± 0.042 mg L-1, respectively. The combined system (SWAP) demonstrated the highest DOC accumulation, with an approximately 2.3-fold increase, sugg

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis reveals the molecular mechanisms underlying perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-induced developmental toxicity during the early life stages of Paralichthys olivaceus.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a representative persistent organic pollutant widely present in the marine environment. However, its toxicological mechanisms during early developmental stages in marine benthic fish are not yet fully understood. In this study, the embryos and larvae of Paralichthys olivaceus were employed to investigate the toxic effects of PFOA during early development using a multi-omics approach. A 96-h acute exposure experiment was conducted, involving six exposure concentrations: 0 (control group), 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 mg/L. The results revealed that the PFOA concentrat

Ecotoxicological effects of traditional and emerging microplastics on marine zooplankton: A review.

Microplastics (MPs) are widespread and persistent pollutants in marine environments, raising global ecological concerns. Zooplankton are a critical group for assessing the broader ecosystem effects of MPs, as their ingestion of MPs can disrupt energy transfer across trophic levels. The toxicity of MPs is influenced by a range of physicochemical characteristics, including particle size, shape, degree of weathering, polymer composition, surface functional groups, incorporated additives, and interactions with other contaminants in the water column. Despite this complexity, studies that systematic

Aquatic Toxicological Assessment of Solid Pyrolysis Product (SPP) from Synthetic Textile Feedstock Relative to Biochar, Carbon Black, and Activated Carbon.

Pyrolysis as a waste conversion process appears relatively feedstock-agnostic, yielding carbonaceous solid pyrolysis products (SPPs) plus condensable gases. Ground SPPs may substitute for or improve upon other carbon commodity particles, yet the environmental hazards of textile-derived SPPs have not been characterized. Here, we produced SPP particles from textile waste feedstock and from wood (biochar) using a pyrolysis process that could scale to waste management. We used electron microscopy, spectroscopy, gas adsorption, and standardized biochar analyses to characterize the chemical, morphol

Unraveling the mechanisms and drivers of brominated flame retardant toxicity in aquatic animals.

The global phase-out of legacy brominated flame retardants (BFRs) has coincided with the increasing detection of novel BFRs in the environment, creating a complex scenario of coexisting legacy and novel pollutants. Aquatic systems serve as major sinks for BFRs, making it imperative to assess the potential ecological risks posed by BFRs to aquatic animals. This study synthesized 8009 valid data points from 137 publications using meta-analysis, machine learning, and the Geodetector model. Meta-analysis revealed that biological factors (life stage and ecological niche) are important determinants

Electrochemical biosensors for saxitoxin detection: advances, limitations, and challenges for market transition.

Saxitoxins, produced by freshwater cyanobacteria and marine dinoflagellates, block neuronal sodium channels and can cause paralysis or death. They contaminate drinking water, bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, and pose serious health risks. Conventional detection methods, though reliable, are costly, time-consuming, and require specialized personnel, limiting rapid or on-site use. Biosensors have emerged as attractive alternatives, with electrochemical platforms standing out for their high sensitivity, low cost, miniaturization potential, and easy integration into portable devices. These adva

Growing up under stress: Chemical pollution and heatwaves affect development and metamorphosis of abalone larvae.

Successful development and dispersal of meroplanktonic larvae are critical for recruitment and population dynamics of benthic invertebrates. With increasing anthropogenic stressors on marine ecosystems, it is essential to understand how combined pressures impact these sensitive early life stages. We investigated the effects of different types of chemical pollution in combination with a simulated marine heatwave (+5 °C) on larval stages of the abalone Haliotis tuberculata coccinea, an endangered subspecies endemic to Macaronesia. Larvae were exposed for 48 h to crude oil, leachates of car tire

Exposure to tire particles leachates reduces clearance rate, increases trace metal accumulation and mortality, and impairs gut microbiota in mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are a major source of microplastics in the environment, including aquatic ecosystems. Their leachates are of growing concern due to their acute toxicity on aquatic organisms. This study investigated the effects of tire leachates on mortality, clearance rate, metal accumulation, and the structure and diversity of the gut microbiota in the blue mussels (Mytilus edulis). Mussels were exposed for one and five weeks to different leachate concentrations (prepared from 5 g of new tire particles (TP) per liter) and a reconstituted metal solution reflecting the concentrations

Towards microplastic bioremediation: Fungal degradation of pristine and pretreated high-density polyethylene and polystyrene.

Microplastic (MP) contamination has become a significant ecological issue because of its enduring existence in the ecosystem and its possible negative impacts. Therefore, using degrading strategies to eliminate these stubborn polymers has been a subject of scientific research. However, the currently used degradation methods are relatively inefficient. Given the pervasiveness of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polystyrene (PS) and their resistance to biodegradability, disposal strategies are critical and must be addressed. This manuscript examines the biodegradation of pristine and UV-trea

Microplastics in the marine environment: development of a new citizen science tool.

Microplastic pollution poses a global threat to all marine ecosystems, and citizen science provides a valuable method for monitoring its presence and distribution. However, volunteers lack access to costly and complex laboratory techniques, such as Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, for accurate identification of microplastics. The purpose of the study was: 1) to develop a simple, low-cost, and field-adaptable protocol that allows volunteers to identify and quantify microplastics by distinguishing them from organic matter and non-plastic materials based on their melting behaviour, and 2) to examine

The effects of microcystin-LR and its location within an environmental pool on rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus) behavior and physiology.

Anthropogenic factors have negatively impacted the health of freshwater ecosystems by increasing the occurrence of harmful cyanobacterial blooms and their associated toxins. Water column mixing and reworking of substrate by organisms allow for cyanotoxin deposition into sediments and resuspension into the water column. Crayfish rework benthic substrates and are exposed to toxins in both benthic and pelagic phases. Since crayfish are keystone species and ecosystem engineers, understanding the spatial dynamics and effects of aquatic toxins on crayfish is necessary. In this study, crayfish were e

Occurrence and toxicity mechanisms of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HPFO-DA, GenX) in aquatic species.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HPFO-DA) is marketed under the trade name "GenX" and is used as a replacement for other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, there are growing concerns about its regulation due to environmental and health impacts in organisms. Here, we review literature regarding the prevalence and toxicity of GenX in aquatic species and performed molecular docking and computational analysis to identify mechanisms of GenX-induced toxicity. Studies report measurable body burden levels of GenX in fish and other aquatic specie

Breaking it down: Unveiling the roles of chemical structure, concentrations and technology on micropollutant biotransformation in wastewater treatment plants.

Complex mixtures of anthropogenic micropollutants (MPs) pose risks to ecosystems and health by entering the environment through multiple pathways. Microbial biotransformation is a major removal process, yet the key drivers remain poorly understood. Activated sludge (AS) treatment in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) acts as a partial barrier and reduces MP emissions into aquatic ecosystems, yet removal efficiencies vary widely across MPs. Here, we studied the biotransformation of 189 MPs in AS from six Swiss WWTPs operated at three treatment conditions: carbon elimination (Celim), nitrificat

Harnessing Microbial Bioremediation and Wastewater Valorization for Production of (Methyl)muconates via Engineered Metabolic Pathways in Aromatic Pollutant Mixtures.

Industrial effluents, particularly (semi)coking wastewaters, pose significant environmental challenges due to their complex aromatic pollutants. This study introduces an innovative approach by engineering Pseudomonas putida BGR4, a robust biodegradative chassis, for the treatment and transformation of simulated aromatic pollutant mixtures of semicoking wastewater into high-value compounds such as (methyl)muconates. We integrated degradation pathways for benzene, toluene, (methyl)phenols, and naphthalene (∼30 kb) into the bacterial chromosome, and through adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE), de
