The fate and removal efficiency of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in livestock wastewater by microbial fuel cell (MFC) was evaluated by High-throughput quantitative PCR. The results showed that 137 ARGs and 9 MGEs were detected in untreated livestock wastewater. The ARG number of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin group B (MLSB), tetracycline and sulfonamide were relatively higher. Throughout the treatment process, the number and abundance of ARGs and MGEs significantly decreased. The relative abundance of tetracycline, sulfonamide and chloramphenicol re

A number of studies have reported that there is a high prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant faecal bacteria excreted by dairy calves. Although faecal shedding is influenced by a variety of factors, such as the environment and calf age, feeding milk with antimicrobial residues contributes significantly to an increased prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria, such as extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E.coli. As a follow-up to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Scientific Opinion on the risk of AMR development in dairy calves published in January 2017, this re

With the progression of acute cholecystitis, antimicrobial therapy becomes important for infection control. Current antibiotic recommendations were mostly based on reports of patients with acute cholangitis whose bile specimens were sampled from the biliary tract. However, as most infections of acute cholecystitis are limited to the gallbladder, direct sampling from the site increases the probability of identifying the causative pathogen. We investigated 321 positive bile cultures from 931 patients with acute cholecystitis who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy between January 2003 and Dec

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to patient health. However, data to optimize antimicrobial use are limited. Furthermore, reducing antibiotic use raises concerns regarding patient safety. The effectiveness of antibiotics in reducing the prevalence of AMR is controversial. Researchers at the Japanese Red Cross Ishinomaki Hospital (JRCIH), the only tertiary care hospital in the medical zone, along with local medical and pharmacy associations and public health centers have been leading the AMR control program since 2018. The program involves lectures aimed at optimizing antimicrobial us

The evaluation of antibacterial activity of metal surfaces can be carried out using various published guidelines which do not always agree with each other on technical conditions and result interpretation. Moreover, these technical conditions are sometimes remote from real-life ones, especially those found in health-care facilities, and do not include a variety of antibiotic-resistant strains. A worst-case scenario protocol adapted from published guidelines was validated on two reference strains (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC 13048). This protocol was designed

Cancer patients are more susceptible to several bacterial infections, particularly urinary tract infections caused by uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC). The objective of this work was detection and the phylogenetic characterization of hospital-acquired isolates of uropathogenic E. coli in cancer patients and the determination of its relation with antibiotic resistance. A total of 110 uropathogenic E. coli responsible for hospital-acquired urinary tract infections in cancer patients were included in this study. A triplex PCR was employed to segregate different isolates into four different phylogenet

Escherichia coli ST131, with its multidrug-resistance-associated H30R1 and H30Rx clonal subsets within the H30R subclone, causes most antimicrobial-resistant E. coli infections. The activity of ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) against ST131 strains is undefined. We determined CZA MICs for 595 E. coli clinical isolates from 24 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (2010-2011). Resistance status and MICs were compared with study resistance category (fluoroquinolone-susceptible, fluoroquinolone-resistant, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing); ST131, H30R1, and H30Rx status; blaCTX-M-15-li

BACKGROUND: Breakthrough invasive fungal infections (bIFIs) are an area of concern in the scarcity of new antifungals. The mixed form of bIFIs is a rare phenomenon but could be potentially a troublesome challenge when caused by azole-resistant strains or non-Aspergillus fumigatus. To raise awareness and emphasize diagnostic challenges, we present a case of mixed bIFIs in a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A newly diagnosed 18-month-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia was complicated with prolonged severe neutropenia after induction chemotherapy. He experienced

The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of 57 Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and 56 Porphyromonas gingivalis strains isolated from subgingival biofilm samples of periodontitis patients in Switzerland from 1980 to 2017. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the most commonly used antibiotics in periodontal therapy (amoxicillin, metronidazole, azithromycin, and doxycycline) or in severe body infections (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, clindamycin, ertapenem, and moxifloxacin) were determined. Furthermore, all the strains were screened for beta-l

A major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer is infection. Since the introduction of the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine in the United States in the 1990s, invasive H influenzae infection has become less common. We report on 5 patients with cancer and invasive H influenzae infection. A literature review was also performed of the dominant Haemophilus subtype and the clinical features associated with the infection and concomitant cancer. Of the 17 cases found in the literature, had hematological malignancies and 1 case each had thymoma, schwannoma, teratoma, and p

Neonatal septicemia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The present study was undertaken to determine the bacteriological profile and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of prevalent pathogens isolated from the blood of septicemic neonates from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). A total of 180 blood samples of septicemic neonates were studied bacteriologically. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done by the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method in accordance to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institutes (CLSI) guidelines. 26.6% (48 out of 180) cases of septicemia could be conf

The presence of pathogenic bacteria with acquired carbapenem resistance constitutes an increasing problem for infection control and infectious disease management. Prompted by an outbreak of infections with Klebsiella pneumoniae producing the carbapenemase KPC-2 at a hospital in Saxony, the Saxon State Ministry of Social Affairs and Consumer Protection (SMS) initiated a point-prevalence survey for carbapenemase-producing gram-negative bacteria. Wards at 53 hospitals in Saxony, mainly intensive care units, were investigated between October 2012 and February 2013. Stool samples and rectal swabs o

The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute has recommended that Enterobacteriaceae susceptibility to most cephalosporins and carbapenems be reported according to minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) alone. We analyzed our record of multi-drug resistant Enterobacteriaceae to assess the impact of these changes. We compared susceptibilities of ceftriaxone-resistant Enterobacteriaceae when using the 2009 and new 2010 MIC standards. Vitek2® (BioMerieux), was used to assess the changes in susceptibility. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus sp., and Escherichia coli were the major species from urin

A screening programme introduced during a major outbreak of a Klebsiella pneumoniae strain producing extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), indicated a dissemination of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in the community. A total of 360 urine samples, yielding 205 isolates, were therefore collected from primary care patients with lower urinary tract infections (UTI) in Uppsala County. The susceptibility pattern of the isolates was investigated with the disk diffusion method. The majority of the positive cultures contained E. coli (76%). Of the members of the Enterobacteriaceae family, only 2 E.

ExoU, a cytotoxin translocated into host cells via the type III secretion system of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is associated with increased mortality and disease severity. We previously showed that impairment of recruited phagocytic cells allowed survival of ExoU-secreting P. aeruginosa in the lung. Here we analyzed types of cells injected with ExoU in vivo using translational fusions of ExoU with a beta-lactamase reporter (ExoU-Bla). Cells injected with ExoU-Bla were detectable in vitro but not in vivo, presumably due to the rapid cytotoxicity induced by the toxin. Therefore, we used a noncytoto

Peritonitis remains a major complication in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. The most recent ISPD guidelines for the empiric initial treatment of peritonitis recommend the use of antibiotics that provide coverage against Gram-positive organisms (vancomycin or cefazolin) and Gram-negative organisms (a third-generation cephalosporin or an aminoglycoside). However, there are some situations in which this regimen may not be desirable. Concerns of resistant organisms, changing microbiology, drug toxicity, or difficulties administering therapy may lead a provider to modify the initial regime

Francisella tularensis is a fastidious Gram-negative bacterium responsible for the zoonotic disease tularemia. Investigation of the biology and molecular pathogenesis of F. tularensis has been limited by the difficulties in manipulating such a highly pathogenic organism and by a lack of genetic tools. However, recent advances have substantially improved the ability of researchers to genetically manipulate this organism. To expand the molecular toolbox we have developed two systems to stably integrate genetic elements in single-copy into the F. tularensis genome. The first system is based upon
