The Catalytic Asymmetric Alkylation of Olefins with Alcohol Derivatives.

Both olefins and arenes are abundant and versatile feedstock chemicals. Although the electrophilic alkylation of arenes constitutes an advanced technology, the corresponding alkylation of olefins is rather undeveloped. Here, we report an asymmetric catalytic benzylation and allylation of unactivated olefins with acetates as electrophiles. The reaction is catalyzed by a single imidodiphosphorimidate organocatalyst operating as a silylium Lewis acid. Mechanistic experiments support an enantioconvergent SN1 mechanism featuring stereoablative ion pair formation, resulting in a dynamic kinetic reso

Buffers in intravenous solutions: is the source of bicarbonate a source of confusion?

There is a widespread belief that organic sodium salts included in intravenous solutions serve as bicarbonate precursors, and that this mechanism explains their effects on plasma pH. We aimed to explain why the effect of organic anions, such as citrate, acetate, gluconate, and lactate on the acid-base balance is independent of bicarbonate generation. For this purpose, we mainly focused on regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA). The sodium load provided with these buffers and its contribution to the plasma strong ion difference is a more suitable model for explaining and predicting their alkali

Health Benefits and Side Effects of Short-Chain Fatty Acids.

The gut microbiota and their metabolites could play an important role in health and diseases of human beings. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are mainly produced by gut microbiome fermentation of dietary fiber and could also be produced by bacteria of the skin and vagina. Acetate, propionate, and butyrate are three major SCFAs, and their bioactivities have been widely studied. The SCFAs have many health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory, anti-obesity, anti-diabetes, anticancer, cardiovascular protective, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective activities. This paper summarize

Determination of drug-polymer binding constants by affinity capillary electrophoresis for aryl propionic acid derivatives and related compounds.

The binding constants (K(b)s) of 17 aryl propionic acid derivatives (APADs) and related compounds with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP K30) and vinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer (Kollidon VA64) in aqueous media were determined by affinity capillary electrophoreses (ACE). The K(b)s of APAD to polymers increase with octanol-water partition coefficients of the compounds. Kollidon VA64 is a stronger binder than PVP K30 to APAD compounds. The K(b)s are greater at pH 4 than at pH 9. Both hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding may be involved. However, hydrophobic interaction appears to be dom

[Total intravenous anesthesia for a patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy who underwent laparoscopic cholecystotomy].

A 49-year-old female with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy underwent laparoscopic cholecystotomy. She had some characteristic clinical symptoms, including muscle weakness, deafness, hemianopia and elevation of lactic acid level in the blood. It has been considered that problems of anesthesia for patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy are relevant to malignant hyperthermia, respiratory depression due to muscle weakness and probability of hyperlactacidemia. Anesthesia was induced with propofol, remifentanil and rocuronium, and maintained with continuous infusion of propofol and remifentanil

[Study on analysis of trace phenol in small amount of aqueous sample by liquid-liquid micro-extraction and gas chromatography].

A method for the liquid-liquid micro-extraction and gas chromatographic analysis of trace phenol in small amount of aqueous sample has been developed. The influences of acid and salts on recovery rate of phenol were examined. And, the influences of injection speeds and the conditions of silica wool in injection port on the quantitation precision were tested. With a direct injection port, an FID and a DB-1 capillary column of wide bore, a detection limit of 1 microgram.L-1 can be obtained employing 8 mL water sample, 160 microL ethyl acetate and 3.5 g ammonium sulfate. The added recoveries were

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha production-inhibiting activity of phthalimide analogues on human leukemia THP-1 cells and a structure-activity relationship study.

N-Substituted phthalimides (2-substituted 1H-isoindole-1,3-diones) were prepared and their inhibitory effects on tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production by human leukemia cell line THP-1 stimulated with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) or okadaic acid (OA) were examined. A structure-activity relationship study of these phthalimide analogues revealed that their inhibitory effects on TPA- and OA-induced TNF-alpha production by THP-1 cells are well correlated to each other, i.e. they may involve the same target molecule(s). An analysis by the use of phthalimide analogue-immob

Re-evaluation of chromosomal aberration induction on nine mouse lymphoma assay "unique positive' NTP carcinogens.

In a collaborative study organized under the JEMS MMS, nine mouse lymphoma assay (MLA) "unique positive' NTP rodent carcinogens were re-evaluated by an in vitro chromosomal aberration assay using Chinese hamster lung fibroblast cells (CHL/IU). Six of nine chemicals induced chromosomal aberrations; bromodichloromethane, chlorendic acid and isophorone induced structural aberrations, and chlorodibromomethane, pentachloroethane and 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane induced numerical aberrations (polyploidy). These six chemicals, therefore, are not uniquely positive in the MLA. The difference between the N
