We have developed a technique for off-line analysis of transient otoacoustic emissions. The correlation of two curves was calculated in a moving time-window of 1 ms time sections. By this method it is possible to recognize high-correlation parts, time sections with low correlation, and thus the duration of the emission can be determined. The mean absolute duration of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions in 36 normal ears was 15.1 +/- 0.69 ms (mean +/- SE). Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) are sounds emitted by the cochlea due to active outer hair cell contraction following stimulation of the stereocilia. The relative occurrence of bell-shaped and various types of W-shaped susceptance-conductance and admittance-phase tympanograms at a probe-tone frequency of 660 Hz was determined from registrations on normal ears. The diagnostic value of the susceptance-conductance versus the admittance-phase representation of tympanograms was studied on pathological middle-ear systems. Eyeblink reflexes to airpuffs to the orbit are inhibited by preliminary tones even of low intensity, and the amount of inhibition or "reflex modulation" (RM) is correlated with tone loudness. MRI is increasingly being used in the diagnosis of fetal anomalies suspected on USG. The USG evaluation of fetal spinal anomalies is limited by acoustic shadowing, fetal position and the amount of liquor. Fetal MRI is able to show spinal anomalies well, as in our case of fetal diastematomyelia with a dorsal dermal sinus, suspected on USG at 28 weeks gestation.

Hearing loss can be caused by acoustic trauma, aging, ototoxic medications, and various other causes. At the cellular level hearing loss seems to be mediated by reactive oxygen species and ultimately through the activation of apoptotic mechanisms. This article explains the cellular and molecular mechanisms of hearing loss and presents medications that could be used in the intratympanic treatment of hearing loss.

The outcomes of 200 radical operations for otitis media purulenta (OMP) have been summarized for 11 years (1985-1995). The analysis of the cases enabled prognosis of OMP complications. It is concluded that in epitympanitis surgery should be made as early as possible, each case of chronic purulent epitympanitis is a threat not only for acoustic and vestibular function but also for the patient' life.

Evoked cortical activity in response to acoustic stimuli (oddball paradigm) was studied in patients with different paranoid disorders. The analysis covered the N150 negative wave and positive complex P300. In patients with paranoid schizophrenia and paranoid form of involutional psychosis cortical responses to the stimuli and cortex effects were not recorded. Such cognitive deficiency is believed to be typical for schizophrenia.

Acoustic methods (measuring the speed of sound) and separate measurements of the density of 10 fresh, unfixed discs at the anterior, central and posterior band were used to determine the module of elasticity. The values of 2634 to 3217 N/mm2 demonstrate the high resistance of the articular disc to elastic deformation. The consequences relating to the function, dysfunction and treatment of internal derangements are discussed.

Surgery for otosclerosis means that the sound protection due to the fixation of the footplate does not exist anymore. As the Corti hair cells have been fragilized by proteolytic enzymes, it is absolutely necessary to reconstruct the sound mechanism in order to maintain the vibration of the perilymph absolutely within acoustical physiologic limit of movement. The means to realize this reconstruction are presented in this paper, as well as the results.

Nystagmoid eye movements elicited by humming loudly was initially misdiagnosed as Tullio's phenomenon (abnormal acoustical stimulation of the vestibular apparatus owing to labyrinthine fistula). Pantopaque cisternography is now an established procedure for the diagnosis of mass lesions arising in, or extending into the cerebellopontine angle. Non-filling of the internal auditory canal, even if of normal dimensions, is, with rare exceptions, diagnostic of an intracanalicular acoustic neurinoma. A case is reported of an intrapetrous epidermoid excavating the internal ear, but not widening the meatus, which prevented filling of the canal at cisternography.
