The Klippel-Feil anomalad as part of the fetal alcohol syndrome.

A brother and sister and described with malformations and handicaps consistent with both the Klippel-Feil Anomalad and the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The mother was known to be a chronic alcholic throughout both pregnancies. It is suggested that these anomalies are not purely fortuitous but rather that maternal alcoholism may cause errors in cervical vertebrae segmentation.

Verbal and nonverbal marital interaction patterns of alcoholics and nonalcoholics.

In a study of the interaction of hospitalized alcoholic and nonalcoholic husbands and their wives, husbands tended to speak more during alcohol-related conversations, while wives spoke more when discussing other topics. Wives in both groups looked at their spouses more than their husbands did during alcohol-focused periods.

[Clinical aspects of pathogenesis of alcohol embryopathy (author's transl)].

68 cases of alcohol embryopathy are reported. The main symptoms are intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation (91%), microcephaly (87 per cent), psychomotor and mental retardation (84 per cent) and a typical craniofacial dysmorphism. Other malformations are frequently found such as cardiac defects (31 per cent), anomalies of joints (23 per cent) and genitalia (50 per cent). There is a marked variation in the intensity of the malformations. Taking into account the extent of the craniofacial dysmorphism and the cerebral damage, a classification into three types (I-111) of alcohol embryopathy

Effects of phototherapy on hepatic function in human alcoholic cirrhosis.

Phototherapy has been used to treat neonatal jaundice, but little assessment has been made of possible beneficial effects on adult liver disease. Effects of phototherapy on bile acid turnover, biliary lipid concentration, liver function tests, and bromosulfophthalein (BSP) kinetics were studied in 8 alcoholic cirrhotics. Phototherapy initially increased biliary specific activity of both primary bile acids and then produced an acceleration of cholic and chenodeoxycholic acid decay curves. Pruritus was relieved in the 3 patients who had this symptom. The proposed mechanism for these changes is m

[Cardiovascular malformations in embryofetal alcohol syndrome (author's transl)].

17 infants and children with embryofetal alcohol syndrome were examined of cardiovascular malformations. In 8 cases heart catheterization revealed malformations, mainly atrial septum defects (in 5 of 8 cases), only in one case a ventricular septum defect, in another case an aplasia of the right pulmonary artery and in one case a mild outflow tract obstruction of the left ventricle. Congenital heart diseases can be expected in nearly 50% of the cases in embryofetal alcohol syndrome.

Presence of serum alpha-1-fetoprotein in alcoholic hepatitis.

Alpha-Fetoprotein was detected in a patient with alcoholic hepatitis during the acute phase of the illness. The alpha-fetoprotein was no longer detected as clinical improvement developed. No evidence of malignant disease was found after an extensive evaluation. This case represents another example of a non-neoplastic disease associated with the presence of increased serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein.

Experimental alcohol-induced hepatic necrosis: suppression by propylthiouracil.

We have previously reported that a hypermetabolic state, resembling that produced by thryoid hormones, exists in the livers of animals treated chronically with ethanol. We propose that this alteration produces a relative hypoxia in the centrilobular zone of the liver which, if severe enough, leads to cellular death and to the production of hepatitis. Rats consuming ethanol for 30 days, given with a nutritionally adequate diet, and exposed to reduced oxygen tensions for only 6 hr, developed histological and biochemical evidence of hepatocellular necrosis and inflammatory lesions confined to the

Effect of chronic alcohol consumption on ethanol and acetaldehyde metabolism.

Hepatic metabolism of ethanol to acetaldehyde by the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) pathway is associated with the generation of reducing equivalents as NADH. Conversely, reducing equivalents are consumed when ethanol oxidation is catalyzed by the NADPH dependent microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS). Since the major fraction of ethanol metabolism proceeds via ADH and since the oxidation of acetaldehyde also generates NADH, an excess of reducing equivalents is produced. This explains a variety of effects following acute ethanol administration, including hyperlactacidemia, hyperuricemia, enha

Povidone-iodine and isopropyl alcohol as disinfectants in preparation for endodontics.

The clinical effectiveness of povidone-iodine as a disinfectant in teeth isolated by a rubber dam was compared to the effectiveness of isopropyl alcohol. The results showed no statistically significant difference between povidone-iodine or isopropyl alcohol for disinfecting intact enamel surfaces. When a scrub-type application of povidone-iodine was used, preliminary removal of plaque with pumice did not increase its effectiveness. Both agents were significantly less effective at 15 minutes after application than they were at 90 seconds after application.

Differential permeation of Artemia cysts and cucumber seeds by alcohols.

The rate of penetration of the simpler alcohols into brine shrimp cysts and cucumber seeds was studied. In solutions below 70% the rate of penetration is related to lipid solvent capacity of the alcohol. In concentrations above 70%, particularly in absolute alcohols, methanol penetrates brine shrimp rapidly and ethanol penetrates slowly. All the other alcohols tested did not pepetrate the dormant structures. Ethionine and deuteroxy-methanol did not affect the rate of penetration of methanol. It is suggested that in dehydrated membranes the lipid moiety is protected by a continuous sheet of pro

Electrocardiographic abnormalities in alcoholic cardiomyopathy. A study of 65 patients.

Electrocardiograms of 65 patients with alcoholic cardiomyopathy seen over a five-year period were reviewed. ST segment and T wave abnormalities, left ventricular hypertrophy, biatrial enlargement, left atrial enlargement, premature ventricular contractions, prolonged PR interval, and left anterior hemiblock are the most frequently encountered abnormalities. A combination of left ventricular hypertrophy and biatrial enlargement with or without left anterior hemiblock is most specific, Atrial flutter or fibrillation, pathologic Q waves, and bifascicular block are not uncommon findings, while iso

Puritus vulvae: treatment by multiple intradermal alcohol injections.

A Preliminary report is presented on the use of multiple intradermal injections of absolute alcohol in the treatment of intractable pruritus vulvae. Twenty-five patients were followed up for over I year, and of these six (24%) were cured, and thirteen (52%) showed marked symptomatic improvement.
