Coral snake bites (Micrurus spp.) in Brazil: a review of literature reports.

CONTEXT: In the Americas, the main representatives of the family Elapidae are coral snakes of the genus Micrurus, of which 33 species are in Brazil. They are the smallest cause of venomous snakebite in Brazil. We analyzed literature reports of coral snake bites in Brazil from 1867 to 2014, and provide a brief review of case series and reports of coral snake bites in the Americas in general. METHODS: Only reports with clinical descriptions of envenomation were included. The variables recorded included identification of the offending snake, patient's age, sex, bite site, clinical manifestations…

A cog in the Weil: A case report of severe leptospirosis.

The nonspecific presentation of leptospirosis and delays in serologic confirmation often make its diagnosis challenging. The presence of comorbidities or potential drug toxicities, which can mimic or obscure clinical findings, further adds to this diagnostic difficulty. Here, we present the case of a 46-year-old male with well-controlled HIV infection on antiretroviral therapy, who presented with a four-day history of fever, malaise, and jaundice. The patient is a pilot with recent travel to the United Kingdom and prior travel throughout North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. On ad

Genetic Adaptation Accompanying the Emergence of Inkoo Virus, the European Orthobunyavirus jamestownense.

Inkoo virus (INKV), a member of Orthobunyavirus jamestownense (Jamestown Canyon orthobunyavirus), is widely distributed in northern Europe. Human seroprevalence of INKV is high in endemic areas, and human infection with this agent can cause neurological disease. Here, I deciphered the genetic basis underlying the emergence of the currently circulating INKV in Europe. Phylogenetic analysis showed a clear delineation between the INKV isolates and those of Orthobunyavirus jamestownense from North America and suggested that INKV may be a descendant of an epidemic expansion from America to Europe.

Global blue carbon losses from salt marshes exceed restoration gains.

Salt marsh soil organic carbon (SOC) is a key blue carbon pool affected by both disturbance and restoration; yet its long-term global dynamics remains poorly understood. Here we provide the global assessment of surface SOC changes in salt marshes from 2002 to 2019, combining multi-source remote sensing imagery with the machine learning calibrated by field observations. We find a net global SOC loss of 0.52 million tonnes, primarily driven by declines in North America and Oceania, which are only partially offset by gains in Asia and South America. The United States alone accounts for ~60% of th

Real-Time PCR Assays for Quantification of Trypanosoma cruzi in Food Samples: A Tool for Surveillance of Oral Chagas Disease Outbreaks.

Chagas disease (ChD), caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health concern in Latin America, despite advances in control measures. While traditionally associated with vector-borne transmission, oral transmission has emerged as the predominant route for acute infections, particularly through contaminated food and beverages. Outbreaks have been reported across Latin America, with Brazil accounting for a significant number of cases, especially in the Amazon region. Consumption of açai pulp and sugarcane juice has been frequently implicated in outbreaks of acute Chagas disease

Group Medical Care Models Transforming Access to Kidney Disease Treatment: An Argentine Experience.

As the prevalence of kidney disease rises in Latin America, there is increasing awareness of the importance of early detection and prevention. However, in a region characterized by socioeconomic inequality, variable access to care, and an overwhelmed primary health system, health professionals must find new and innovative ways of delivering care that is cost effective and mindful of patients' needs and social determinants of health. Group medical care (GMC), a model combining group visits and peer support with personalized care, has emerged as an intervention with proven benefits in clinical o

How Children Stop Adult Perpetrators From Unwanted Touching Within an Institutional Setting: Termination Patterns During Sexual Contact Stage.

This qualitative study analyzes victims' narratives of male-on-male child molestation within the Boy Scouts of America. The focus of previous literature on sex crime victims mostly centered on how to avoid sex offenders based on the offenders' behaviors and effective victims' treatment plans to alleviate their posttrauma as a result of sexual abuse. Yet studies have not provided detailed descriptions of when and how to resist sexual advances to children when such incidents are in progress within youth-oriented institutions. Few have examined victim narratives to discover the dynamics of child

The power of story: what Victorian novels can teach us about public health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The recent uptick in outbreaks of infectious diseases once firmly under control in North America and the UK (including measles, tuberculosis, scarlet fever, and whooping cough) concerns public health professionals in light of increasing vaccine skepticism. Because disease prevention and cure have evolved slowly, the general public may misunderstand the potential impact of rejecting vaccines and need stories that will clarify the risks. RECENT FINDINGS: Studying history and literature reveals that modern citizens of wealthy, industrialized nations have forgotten the emotiona

Influence of substance use on male reproductive health and offspring outcomes.

The prevalence of substance use globally is rising and is highest among men of reproductive age. In Africa, and South and Central America, cannabis use disorder is most prevalent and in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Central America, Canada and the USA, opioid use disorder predominates. Substance use might be contributing to the ongoing global decline in male fertility, and emerging evidence has linked paternal substance use with short-term and long-term adverse effects on offspring development and outcomes. This trend is concerning given that substance use is increasing, including during t

Chemical Treatments on Invasive Bivalve, Corbicula fluminea.

The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea is a native aquatic species in Eastern Asia and Africa but has become one of the ecologically and economically harmful invasive species in aquatic ecosystems in Europe, North America, and South America. Due to their natural characteristics as a hermaphroditic species with a high fecundity and dispersal capacity, Asian clams are extremely difficult to eradicate once they have infiltrated a waterbody. This is an emerging issue for states in the Northeastern United States, as Asian clams expand their range farther North due to climate change. There has been exten

Cross-species transmission and PB2 mammalian adaptations of highly pathogenic avian influenza A/H5N1 viruses in Chile.

H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIV) emerged in wild birds in Chile in December 2022 and spilled over into poultry, marine mammals, and one human. Between December 9, 2022 - March 14, 2023, a coordinated government/academic response detected HPAIV by real-time RT-PCR in 8.5% (412/4735) of samples from 23 avian and 3 mammal orders. Whole-genome sequences obtained from 77 birds and 8 marine mammals revealed that all Chilean H5N1 viruses belong to lineage 2.3.4.4b and cluster monophyletically with viruses from Peru, indicating a single introduction from North America into Peru/C

Pharmacological Therapy in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: A Narrative Review of the Past 90 Years.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases had their first peak in incidence in countries in North America, Europe, and Oceania and are currently experiencing a new acceleration in incidence, especially in Latin America and Asia. Despite technological advances, 90 years after the development of the first molecule for the treatment of IBD, we still do not have drugs that promote disease remission in a generalized way. We carried out a narrative review on therapeutic advances in the treatment of IBD, the mechanisms of action, and the challenges facing the therapeutic goals in the treatment of IBD. Salicylates

Epidemiological Situation of Glanders in the State of Pará, Brazil.

Glanders is an anthropozoonosis caused by the bacteria Burkholderia mallei, affecting mainly equids. It has been eradicated in North America, Australia, and Western Europe, but continues to occur sporadically in countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. Its notification is mandatory by the World Organization for Animal Health. After 30 years, the disease reappeared in Brazil in 1999 and, thereafter, 1,413 outbreaks have been reported. However, the epidemiological situation of the disease in the country is not adequately known. Thus, 2718 animals from 654 properties in the

Intramedullary histoplasmosis lesion in children: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease endemic in some regions of the United States of America, Canada, and Latin America. The geographic characteristics, humidity, soil, and climate are responsible for such distribution. In Brazil, there are case reports of histoplasmosis throughout its territory, being considered an endemic region. It is considered an opportunistic disease, affecting mostly immunocompromised patients. To the present date, scientific publications dealing with pediatric cases of histoplasmosis are restricted to case series. Spinal cord injuries caused by histoplasmosis

Putative native South Amerindian origin of head lice clade F: evidence from head lice nits infesting human shrunken heads.

The head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, is a strictly obligate human ectoparasite with a long history of association with humans. Here, 17 ancient head lice nits were recovered from six shrunken human heads (known as tsantsas) of individuals from the Shuar/Jivaro tribe, a native Amazonian population from Ecuador, South America. Cytochrome b DNA analysis revealed the presence of three known mitochondrial clades. Clade A was the most frequent (52.94%), followed by F (35.29%), and B (11.76%). Eleven haplotypes were found in 17 samples, and nine of the haplotypes were novel, indicating an unusu

Radiculoneuritis due to Lyme disease in a North American child.

Lyme disease is the most frequently reported vector-borne illness in the United States. It is caused by infection with Borrelia burgdorferi via the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (Ixodes spp.) Lyme disease has three stages: early localized, early disseminated, and late. Early disseminated Lyme disease may include neurologic manifestations such as cranial nerve palsy, meningitis, and radicular pain (also called radiculoneuritis). Isolated radiculoneuritis is a rare presentation of early disseminated Lyme disease and is likely underrecognized. We report a case of isolated Lyme radiculoneur

The Botfly, A Tropical Menace: A Distinctive Myiasis Caused by Dermatobia hominis.

Dermatobia hominis, also known as the human botfly, is native to tropical and subtropical Central and South America and seen in travelers from endemic to temperate regions including the United States and Europe. Cutaneous infestation botfly myiasis involves the development of D. hominis larvae in the skin and is common in tropical locations. The distinct appearance of a cutaneous D. hominis infestation facilitates early diagnosis and intervention where cases are common. However, the identification of D. hominis in temperate regions may prove challenging due to its rarity. D. hominis may be mis

Active Circulation of Madariaga Virus, a Member of the Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus Complex, in Northeast Brazil.

Madariaga virus (MADV) is a member of the eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) complex that circulates in Central and South America. It is a zoonotic, mosquito-borne pathogen, belonging to the family Togaviridae. Disturbances in the natural transmission cycle of this virus result in outbreaks in equines and humans, leading to high case fatality in the former and acute febrile illness or neurological disease in the latter. Although a considerable amount of knowledge exists on the eco-epidemiology of North American EEEV strains, little is known about MADV. In Brazil, the most recent isolatio
