This investigation was done to determine whether dipicolinic acid was present in the Legionnaires' disease bacterium. A colorimetric assay for dipicolinic acid was done and the results for the bacterium were compared with those obtained for Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Dipicolinic acid was not detected in the Legionnaires' disease bacterium. This demonstrated that the bacterium was unable to produce typical bacterial endospores under the experimental conditions examined.

AbstractAnthrax is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis that can lead to severe illness and death. Although human infections are rare in the United States, outbreaks are common in U.S. livestock. In August 2024, an anthrax outbreak among cattle in Wyoming resulted in multiple human exposures. This report describes the use of postexposure prophylaxis among 13 individuals identified with potential exposure.

Actinomycosis is a suppurative granulomatous infection caused by the Gram-positive bacillus Actinomyces israelii. It rarely affects the pelvis, but its incidence appears to be increasing, possibly due to the frequent use of intrauterine devices (IUDs). We report the case of a patient with an IUD in place for over 10 years who presented with pelvic pain, general health deterioration, and imaging findings suggesting a neoplastic origin.

A 46-year-old female patient, who presented with a black, crusty lesion on the upper eyelid, was diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax after the detection of Bacillus anthracis in the skin culture. It was determined that the symptoms started after she cooked the meat she bought from a butcher. Anthrax is a disease that should be kept in mind in cutaneous infections even in isolated lesions, especially in endemic areas.

Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) spinal osteomyelitis in a patient with AIDS is often presumed to be caused by reactivated Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, other AFB pathogens can mimic M. tuberculosis and, to ensure appropriate and adequate therapy, should be considered by clinicians. We present a case of aggressive spinal osteomyelitis caused by Mycobacterium heckeshornense in an AIDS patient; a review of the literature is also included.

Nocardiosis is caused by nocardia species, a Gram positive aerobic filamentous bacillus. It is ubiquitous in the environment and often presents as pulmonary disease in more than 70% of patients.1 Dissemination of the disease may manifest as brain abscesses, and is reported to account for approximately 2% of all brain abscesses.2,3 We present a case of cerebral nocardiosis in a patient with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia, previously unreported in the literature.

The isoflavonoids coumestrol, genistein and daidzein have been isolated and identified by bioassay-guided fractionation from the acetone extract of Erythrina crista galli young twigs infected with Phomopsis sp. These compounds showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus brevis (MIC values 16.3, 64.8 and 137.8 microM, respectively). This is the first time that coumestrol, besides lutein and n-nonacosane, are reported in this species.

A 48-y-old female developed cellulitis, myonecrosis and sepsis after a prick wound in her hand while boning freshwater fish. Cultures revealed Aeromonas hydrophila, a Gram-negative bacillus. Despite prompt care the patient died 4 d after the incident. Our case shows that the occurrence of severe Aeromonas infections is not limited to tropical and subtropical areas of the world.

A morphometric analysis of skin dendritic cells was done on biopsies of patients with different forms of leprosy. An anti S100 antibody was used to determine dendritic cell quantity and extension. Patients with a better immune response to the bacillus showed a greater number of dendritic cells in the cases of dimorphic tuberculoid leprosy and tuberculoid leprosy. This result contrasted with that from patients with dimorphic lepromatous leprosy and lepromatous leprosy.

Between 20 and 22 June 1974, three captive carnivores (two genets, Genetta sp. and one caracal, Felis caracal) died suddenly in the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden without previous signs of illness. Bacillus anthracis was isolated from their blood and tissues. The organism was highly pathogenic to laboratory animals. The disease was believed to have been contracted from meat fed the animals.

Bacillus anthracis caused high mortality among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Beulah Island, Desha County, Arkansas. Sixty-seven carcasses were located and the total loss was estimated between 200 and 300 deer. Range conditions indicated that the deer herd had greatly exceeded carrying capacity. Lesions in deer were similar to those ascribed to anthrax in domestic cattle, sheep, and goats.

Industrial wastewater is a major source of heavy metal contamination, posing serious environmental and public health risks.
