BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that restricted and repetitive behaviors may differentiate children who develop autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by late infancy. How these core symptoms manifest early in life, particularly among infants at high risk for the disorder, is not well characterized.
METHODS: Prospective, longitudinal parent-report data (Repetitive Behavior Scales-Revised) were collected for 190 high-risk toddlers and 60 low-risk controls from 12 to 24 months of age. Forty-one high-risk children were classified with ASD at age 2. Profiles of repetitive behavior were compared betw

In order to study the outcome of childhood behavior problems and to investigate relationships between those behavior problems and mental health problems in later years, a survey which was conducted in 1977 was repeated after six years. Subjects were randomly selected children aged from three to seven years living in Bunkyo-ku in Tokyo in 1977. Out of 279 children, responses to the questionnaire were obtained for 201 children, with 39 refusing to co-operate and 39 having left the area. The main results were as follows: 1. Comparison of prevalence rates of individual behavior problems occurring

BACKGROUND: This study intended to explore the levels of 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and analyzed the correlation between 25(OH)D2, 25(OH)D3 levels and ASD core symptoms, children development.
METHODS: A total of 208 children with ASD who were diagnosed in hospital from January 2021 to December 2023 were selected as the ASD group. 208 children for routine physical examination were selected as the control group. The contents of 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 in serum were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) m

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic disorders are among the most frequent co-occurring diagnoses in patients with substance use disorders (SUD). Individuals with this dual diagnosis often present with special treatment needs, especially after childhood traumatic experiences (CT). Along with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative symptoms, suicidal behaviors belong to the clinical challenges in this group of patients and may influence the course and outcome of SUD treatment. Therefore, a better understanding of the relationships between different forms of CT, psychopathology and suicidal b

Characterize the presence and nature of disordered eating behavior documentation in women veterans' mental health (MH) services. Retrospective chart review. A subset of MH progress notes was reviewed from participants in a research study on self-reported disordered eating behaviors. Notes were reviewed and coded to establish the frequency and context in which disordered eating was addressed within MH services. Two-hundred twenty-two unique notes were reviewed across 28 patients. 19.8% of notes across 16 patients included documentation of disordered eating behaviors. Documentation most frequent

BACKGROUND: Early-onset behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by prominent behavioral and personality changes and is frequently misdiagnosed as a primary psychiatric illness, particularly in low-resource settings, leading to diagnostic delays and inappropriate treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the case of a 36-year-old man from rural Nepal with an 18-month history of progressive behavioral changes. Clinical history, longitudinal symptom progression, treatment response, family history, and neuroimaging findings were evaluated

The neurobiological understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) includes dysregulated frontostriatal circuitry and altered monoamine transmission. Repetitive stereotyped behavior (e.g., grooming), a featured symptom in OCD, has been proposed to be associated with perturbed dopamine (DA) signaling. However, the precise brain circuits participating in DA's control over this behavioral phenotype remain elusive. Here, we identified that DA neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) orchestrate ventromedial striatum (VMS) microcircuits as well as lateral orbitofrontal cortex (lOFC) du

BACKGROUND: Dopamine agonists (DAs), long used in treating Parkinson's disease and effective in relieving symptoms of restless legs syndrome, have frequently been reported to induce problematic compulsive behaviors (e.g., obsessive gambling, hypersexuality) in individuals who had never had difficulties with such behaviors before.
OBJECTIVE: The authors report two cases that add to a small-but-growing literature suggesting that these drugs be dispensed with appropriate caution.
METHOD: The authors describe two patients seen in a psychiatric setting-one, after a suicide attempt, and one with d

In infectious diseases and during inflammation, anorexia, loss of body weight, malaise, fatigue and depression are induced. These symptoms are correctively called 'sickness behaviors', and the central actions of cytokines play a role in their induction. The loss of body weight in cancer cachexia is also a result of development of sickness behaviors. It has been reported that the administration of NSAID ibuprofen to patients with cancer cachexia improves the loss in body weight. We studied the effect of NSAID on the loss of body weight by using rodent sickness behavior models. We have reported

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine whether family and individual psychopathology mediate the relationship between unwanted sexual experiences and bulimic eating behavior.
METHOD: Sixty-one women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa and 92 women students and university staff who had never met critia for an eating disorder completed standardized questionnaires on eating behavior, sexual abuse, individual psychopathology, and family psychopathology.
RESULTS: Linear regression showed bulimic eating behavior to be significantly related to sexual abuse (beta = .40; p < .0001; R2 = 8.9%).

The literature exploring stealing behavior in individuals with an eating disorder is reviewed. Although epidemiological data are lacking, clinical observations and preliminary studies suggest an association between stealing behavior and eating disorders. Stealing appears to be strongly associated with bulimic symptoms in patients with eating disorders, and the presence of stealing behavior may serve as a marker of eating-disorder severity. The apparent connection between the two problems is discussed, and nine putative explanatory factors are examined: starvation-induced mental dysfunction, ef

Mental health-focused chatbots have emerged as scalable interventions that deliver therapeutic content through conversational interfaces. This meta-analysis of 35 studies (N = 1,780) indicates that chatbots can reduce depression (g = -.53, 95% CI [-.67,-.40]) and anxiety (g = -.36, 95% CI [-.46,-.27]) symptoms over time. However, wide prediction intervals reveal substantial heterogeneity, suggesting that while some interventions are associated with symptom reduction, others may increase them. Moderator analyses revealed that therapeutic alliance significantly predicted reductions in both depre

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease can emerge years before diagnosis, but detailed temporal mapping of morbidity and medication use in the prodromal period is lacking.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective, incidence density-matched nested case-control study including individuals diagnosed with late-onset Alzheimer's disease in Danish memory clinics from 2016 to 2022 and cognitively healthy matched controls. Exposures were primary and secondary discharge diagnoses from hospital contacts, and redeemed prescriptions.
RESULTS: A total of 19,102 patients and 57,306 matched

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common and can affect children's social lives. This study investigated the effects of exposure to a rich natural environment on GI symptoms, salivary cortisol levels, salivary amylase levels, and the gut microbiota in young children. Children aged 5-6 years from four kindergartens in Japan were randomly assigned to two groups: a nature childcare group and a regular childcare group. The children were exposed to their respective conditions once weekly for one month. Before and after the intervention, GI symptoms were detected using the Children's Somatization I

OBJECTIVES: Older adults may be particularly vulnerable to the negative effect of distress on cognition, thus explaining cognitive behavioral therapy's (CBT's) diminished efficacy for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in later life. Emotion-centered Problem Solving Therapy (EC-PST) may address this and other barriers to skill acquisition.
METHOD: This single-arm pilot aimed to determine the feasibility of 6-session EC-PST to achieve clinically significant improvements in anxiety and/or worry symptoms in adults aged 55+ with GAD. Secondary analyses also examined reductions in depressive sympt

BACKGROUND: While neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in Huntington's Disease (HD), there is a dearth of evidence about the effectiveness of psychotropic medication for treating behavioral and cognitive symptoms. This article systematically reviews and aggregates the evidence of the effects of antidepressants on individuals with early HD.
METHODS: A systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of RCTs comparing antidepressants to placebo in individuals with HD was performed, with a focus on outcomes of executive functioning, functional capacity, mood, motor function, and adverse events

Traumatic experiences during childhood can have profound effects on stress sensitive brain structures (e.g., amygdala and hippocampus) and the emergence of psychiatric symptoms. Recent theoretical and empirical work has delineated dimensions of trauma (i.e., threat and deprivation) as having distinct neural and behavioral effects, although there are few longitudinal examinations. A sample of 243 children and adolescents were followed for three time points, with each assessment approximately 1 year apart (ages 9-15 years at Time 1; 120 males). Participants or their caregiver reported on youths'
