Mulch made from recycled construction and demolition (C&D) wood has been reported to contain elevated levels of arsenic from inadvertent inclusion of chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Helicobacter pylori infection causes chronic gastritis and leads to peptic ulcer and gastric adenocarcinoma. An impaired gastric mucosal barrier could be involved in these processes. Our aim was to investigate gastric barrier function in H. pylori-induced gastritis.
METHODS: Stripped gastric mucosal tissues of H. pylori-infected Mongolian gerbils (4 weeks and 70 weeks after inoculation, respectively) and controls were mounted in Ussing chambers. Mitogen-induced T cell responses are suppressed in mice infected with larvae of Taenia crassiceps. The effects of experimental infection on specific T cell responses, however, have not been examined. In the present study, we demonstrate that larval-infected mice exhibit suppressed ability to develop anti-virus specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses while maintaining apparently normal natural killer (NK) cell responsiveness.

We used scanning electron microscopy in combination with X-ray microanalysis to evaluate Co-, Cr-, and Mo-based human femoral hip prostheses. In total, 23 retrieved implants and four new implants were included in this study. We report the nonoperative treatment of a recurrent, multilevel spinal aneurysmal bone cyst by injection of 32P chromic phosphate colloid into the cyst. The patient was then followed up with serial CT examinations, which showed stabilization and progressive ossification within the lesion. The rationale, alternatives, and possible contraindications to radionuclide ablation of spinal aneurysmal bone cysts are discussed.

The study demonstrates the usefulness of water-soluble plastic resins for the cytological quantification of RNA contents after toluidine blue staining. Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is the best of four currently used techniques for obtaining results of high accuracy and precision in studies of metal metabolism. Two adhesives, Super Bond and Panavia, were evaluated for shear bond strength to dentin. Twenty human teeth were used for each adhesive. Bonding sites were prepared in dentin (600 grit) and the adhesives applied according to the manufacturers' instructions. Bond strengths were determined with an Instron testing machine at 24 hours. The role of 2-mercaptoethanol and indomethacin in the induction of lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) activity by interleukin-2 (IL-2) in rat splenocyte cultures was investigated. Spleens from 4-month-old male rats of five different strains were tested. The plasma clearances of 51Cr-EDTA and 99mTc-DTPA have been compared in a series of 154 children with reflux nephropathy. The study has shown that DTPA can replace EDTA with the advantage that it can also be used for dynamic renal imaging and calculation of individual kidney function. The role of the pituitary-adrenal axis in the inhibition of gastrointestinal transit caused by intrathecal administration of bombesin was examined. Bombesin (0.3-10 micrograms) slowed transit by this route in a dose-related manner. Either hypophysectomy or adrenalectomy prevented the inhibition of gastrointestinal transit associated with bombesin (10 micrograms, i.th.). The inhibitory gut effects of this peptide were not prevented in sham-operated rats. Intrathecal bombesin-induced inhibition of gastrointestinal transit is thus dependent upon an intact pituitary-adrenal axis.

The bile acid breath test was studied to examine its sensitivity for establishing the diagnosis of bacterial overgrowth in comparison to that of the Schilling test and small-intestinal cultures in 12 patients with a stagnant (blind) loop syndrome, as well as in 38 patients who had other conditions with suspected bacterial contamination of the small intestine. Oesophageal tissue reaction to different suture materials (chromic catgut, silk, prolene and stainless steel wire) was analysed and compared in 45 cats with and without reflux oesophagitis. Diffuse reflux oesophagitis was produced in 12 out of 21 animals subjected to oesophagocardiomyotomy (Marwedel-Wendel) combined with production of a fixed hiatal hernia of sliding type.
