Predicting response to a smartphone-based cognitive-behavioral therapy for body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a severe, chronic disorder if untreated. Smartphone cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for BDD is efficacious and can reduce key treatment barriers (e.g., lack of clinicians, cost, stigma). While promising, little is known about who is more or less likely to benefit from this approach. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of a randomized, waitlist-controlled trial of smartphone CBT for BDD. Participants (N = 80) were recruited nationally and randomized to receive a 12-week, coach-guided CBT for BDD app, either immediately or after a 12-week

Emotional Distress and Physical Activity Engagement in U.S. Veterans With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is recommended as part of guideline-based care for managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at all stages of the disease. However, physical activity interventions are less effective in individuals with co-occurring emotional distress (i.e., depression and/or anxiety symptoms). Interventions that dually promote improved physical and mental health in COPD are needed. The first step for intervention development is understanding individuals' experience of these factors. PURPOSE: To understand the experience of emotional distress in U.S. Veterans diagnose

Predictive Modeling of Immunogenicity to Botulinum Toxin A Treatments for Glabellar Lines.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A), derived from Clostridium botulinum , is widely used in medical and aesthetic treatments. Its clinical application extends from managing chronic conditions like cervical dystonia and migraine to reducing facial wrinkles. Despite its efficacy, a challenge associated with BoNT-A therapy is immunogenicity, where the immune system produces neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) against BoNT-A, reducing its effectiveness over time. This issue is important for patients requiring repeated treatments. The authors compared BoNT-A products, examining the factors influencin

Association between stopping renin-angiotensin system inhibitors immediately before hemodialysis initiation and subsequent cardiovascular events.

It is controversial whether renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASIs) should be stopped in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Recently, it was reported that stopping RASIs in advanced CKD was associated with increased mortality and cardiovascular (CV) events; however, it remains unclear whether stopping RASIs before dialysis initiation affects clinical outcomes after dialysis, which this study aimed to evaluate. In this multicenter prospective cohort study in Japan, we included 717 patients (mean age, 67 years; 68% male) who had a nephrology care duration ≥90 days, initiate

Polypharmacy and medication usage patterns in hypertensive patients: Findings from the Pars Cohort Study.

Polypharmacy, defined here as the concomitant use of five or more medications, is a significant health issue, particularly affecting individuals with chronic diseases like hypertension (HTN). To compare individuals with and without HTN in term of polypharmacy, and to investigate correlates of polypharmacy and medication use patterns in individuals with HTN in southwest Iran. This cross-sectional study used the baseline data of 9270 participants of the Pars Cohort Study (PCS) with a mean age of 52.6 ± 9.7 years. Poisson multivariable modeling was applied to identify correlates of polypharmacy,

Unravelling the cardio-renal-metabolic-foot connection in people with diabetes-related foot ulceration: a narrative review.

Diabetes-related foot ulceration (DFU), a serious but preventable complication of diabetes, is a leading cause of hospitalisation, lower extremity amputation and disability worldwide. People with DFU have a greater burden of cardiovascular risk factors, heart failure and chronic kidney disease, resulting in over two-fold higher risk of cardiovascular death compared with people with diabetes without DFU. Here, we propose a "cardio-renal-metabolic-foot" connection in people with diabetes based on shared pathophysiological mechanisms linking DFU with cardiovascular and renal disease. Whilst these

Acute pancreatitis: A review of diagnosis, severity prediction and prognosis assessment from imaging technology, scoring system and artificial intelligence.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a potentially life-threatening inflammatory disease of the pancreas, with clinical management determined by the severity of the disease. Diagnosis, severity prediction, and prognosis assessment of AP typically involve the use of imaging technologies, such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound, and scoring systems, including Ranson, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II, and Bedside Index for Severity in AP scores. Computed tomography is considered the gold standard imaging modality for AP due to its high sensitivity and specif

Trajectories of depression symptoms in a therapist-supported digital mental health intervention: a repeated measures latent profile analysis.

PURPOSE: Major depression affects 10% of the US adult population annually, contributing to significant burden and impairment. Research indicates treatment response is a non-linear process characterized by combinations of gradual changes and abrupt shifts in depression symptoms, although less is known about differential trajectories of depression symptoms in therapist-supported digital mental health interventions (DMHI). METHODS: Repeated measures latent profile analysis was used to empirically identify differential trajectories based upon biweekly depression scores on the Patient Health Quest

A comparison of emotion-focused therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder: Results of a feasibility randomized controlled trial.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic mental health difficulty typically present in primary care settings. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the psychological intervention with the best evidence for its efficacy for GAD. The development of other psychological interventions can increase client choice. This feasibility trial examined an initial assessment of the efficacy of EFT in comparison to CBT in the treatment of GAD in the context of an Irish public health service. The trial provided information on recruitment, therapist training/adherence, and client retention relevant for a

SOX10: 20 years of phenotypic plurality and current understanding of its developmental function.

SOX10 belongs to a family of 20 SRY (sex-determining region Y)-related high mobility group box-containing (SOX) proteins, most of which contribute to cell type specification and differentiation of various lineages. The first clue that SOX10 is essential for development, especially in the neural crest, came with the discovery that heterozygous mutations occurring within and around SOX10 cause Waardenburg syndrome type 4. Since then, heterozygous mutations have been reported in Waardenburg syndrome type 2 (Waardenburg syndrome type without Hirschsprung disease), PCWH or PCW (peripheral demyelina

A non-bioartificial liver support system combined with transplantation in HBV-related acute-on-chronic liver failure.

We aim to determine the impact of an artificial liver support system (ALSS) treatment before liver transplantation (LT), and identify the prognostic factors and evaluate the predictive values of the current commonly used ACLF prognostic models for short-term prognosis after LT. Data from 166 patients who underwent LT with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) were retrospectively collected from January 2011 to December 2018 from the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Patients were divided into two groups depending on whether they received ALSS treatment pre-LT

Inpatient mortality in transition-aged youth with rheumatic disease: an analysis of the National Inpatient Sample.

BACKGROUND: Transition from pediatric to adult care is a vulnerable time for youth with chronic diseases. In youth with rheumatic disease, studies show high rates of loss to follow up and increased disease activity. However, mortality data are lacking. In this study, we assessed whether transitional age is a risk factor for inpatient mortality. METHODS: We analyzed the 2012-2014 National Inpatient Sample database, a representative sample of discharges in the United States. Individuals with rheumatic diseases were identified by International Statistical Classification of Disease - 9 (ICD-9) co

A Novel AAV-mediated Gene Delivery System Corrects CFTR Function in Pigs.

Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal-recessive disease that is caused by a mutant CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) gene and is characterized by chronic bacterial lung infections and inflammation. Complementation with functional CFTR normalizes anion transport across the airway surface. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a useful vector for gene therapy because of its low immunogenicity and ability to persist for months to years. However, because its episomal expression may decrease after cell division, readministration of the AAV vector may be required. To overcome this, we d
