To clarify the biological and clinical behavior and prognosis of mixed gliomas, 47 patients underwent intraoperative bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling studies. The mean age was 27.8 years at symptom onset and 31.8 years at labeling (median, 36 years). Forty-five tumors were supratentorial, 30 were frontal, and two were cerebellar; 16 were recurrent at labeling. The median labeling index (LI) was 1% (range, < 1 to 15.1%). The International Headache Society (IHS) headache classification, while a major advance, does not adequately classify the daily and near-daily headache disorders known as chronic daily headache (CDH). We believe that chronic daily headache is a group of disorders which includes chronic tension-type headache (CTTH), transformed migraine (TM), new daily persistent headache (NDPH), and hemicrania continua (HC). We propose specific criteria for transformed migraine, new daily persistent headache, and hemicrania continua, and have modified the criteria for chronic tension-type headache.

Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to assess the subchondral bone of the knee in 64 patients with severe hemophilia A. Using this method, subchondral cysts could be detected and evaluated. Using questionnaire data from two recent surveys, headache sufferers were classified as having either migraine, episodic, or chronic tension-type headache using the International Headache Society criteria. Of 410 subjects with a headache history of 2 years or more, 147 or 35.9% were assigned Code 1.7 (migrainous disorder not fulfilling the above criteria) or Code 2.3 (headache of the tension-type not fulfilling above criteria). To determine objectively the degree of olfactory disturbance, we biopsied the olfactory mucosa from patients who complained of anosmia. The olfactory disturbances in this study were caused by choanal atresia, chronic sinusitis, viral inflammation, and head trauma, as well as by congenital and idiopathic anosmia. The biopsy specimens were examined by light microscopy and the degree of mucosal degeneration present was classified according to five grades. The clinical courses of the patients studied paralleled the changes found in the olfactory mucosa.
