Enterobacterial and pseudomonal carriage in the oropharynx, stomach and gut is uncommon in healthy individuals (apart from E. coli in the gut). Underlying intrinsic disease is the main cause of oropharyngeal and gastrointestinal carriage of 'abnormal' flora. Interventions including intubation, catheterisation and drugs impairing peristalsis may promote this abnormal carriage in the critically ill. In 15 adult patients with severely advanced periodontal disease unrelated to localized juvenile periodontitis high numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans (A. a.) were identified in samples of subgingival plaque (median log CFU 5.13). 130 bacterial strains were studied for their antibiotics sensitivity by an agar diffusion method and using API ATB System: 50 Enterobacteriaceae, 12 other Gram negative bacilli, 48 Staphylococci and 20 Streptococci. The results concurred in 83 p. cent of the cases. Discrepancies were essentially observed for coagulase negative Staphylococci and Streptococci. To identify patients with T-lymphocyte--mediated granulopoietic failure, we compared clonal growth of unfractionated bone-marrow cells with that of autologous marrow cells from which T lymphocytes had been removed, in a group of 234 patients. A previously healthy woman developed severe, periodic neutropenia after ingestion of phenylbutazone. Oscillations in the monocyte count and hemoglobin concentrations also occurred. The neutropenic episodes were associated with severe bacterial infections requiring hospitalization. Lithium induced a transient interruption in the neutropenia, but continued use was ineffective. Prednisone in a dosage of 100 mg daily successfully interrupted the neutrophil cycling and prevented infection. The patient has remained in remission on 10 mg of prednisone on alternate days.

A simplified system for classification of aggregate incidence and growth pattern in the CFU-c (colony-forming units in culture) assay, allowing simple and reproducible interpretation of test results, was developed and applied to 552 bone marrow samples from 202 patients with acute leukemia. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the major cause of dementia worldwide. Early-onset familial AD accounts for about 0.5% of all AD and is caused by single major gene mutations and autosomal dominant inheritance. An N141I missense mutation is associated with a significant increase in basal cell death and apoptosis. In this work we generated hiPSC from skin fibroblasts obtained from an AD patient carrying a N141I missense mutation in PSEN2. The generated iPSC colonies grew and were characterized by pluripotency marker staining; the N141I missense mutation was corrected using genome editing technology.

We present an unusual case of a 60-year-old woman with myasthenia gravis, who was diagnosed with an incidental thymoma found on computerized tomography. Enteric fever due to Salmonella Paratyphi A (SPA) is a global problem occurring as outbreaks at times. An unusual SPA (2,12:a:-) variety durazzo has been reported rarely. We report an outbreak of enteric fever due to this variety affecting 43 individuals.
