Four infants with stiff skin and painful joint contractures in the first few months of life are described. Other features included small papules, particularly on the face and trunk, perianal nodules, hyperpigmentation over the metacarpophalangeal joints and over the malleoli, gingival hyperplasia, persistent diarrhea, and failure to thrive. A large family with X-linked mental retardation, originally reported in 1944 by Allan, Herndon, and Dudley, has been reinvestigated. Twenty-nine males have been affected in seven generations. Over a 14-year period, 26 patients with adrenal insufficiency of multiple etiology were evaluated. Eight were diagnosed at autopsy, six of whom had acute bilateral adrenal hemorrhage. Nine had chronic adrenal insufficiency. Of these, five were idiopathic and three had polyglandular disorders. Four others had tuberculosis. A review of the records of 61 patients with 176 surgically treated webs was completed to evaluate the results of the different operative techniques used to separate the fingers.
