BACKGROUND: Persons with HIV and cryptococcal antigenemia are at high risk of progression to cryptococcal meningitis or death. Baseline cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) plasma titer ≥1:160 is a known risk factor for poor outcomes, but other risk factors are unknown. In HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis, baseline serum C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations are positively associated with increased mortality. We hypothesized that CRP might also be associated with meningitis or death in persons with cryptococcal antigenemia.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on long-term pulmonary valve function after the Ross procedure. This study sought to determine the long-term function of the pulmonary valve in 443 consecutive adult patients who underwent a Ross procedure.
METHODS: All 443 patients who underwent a Ross procedure between November 1992 and March 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. All underwent pulmonary valve replacement using a cryopreserved pulmonary allograft. Freedom from the study's outcomes were calculated using Kaplan Meier survival. Risk factors for valve failure were analyzed using Cox regression.

Drug-induced seizure liabilities produce significant compound attrition during drug discovery. Currently available in vitro cytotoxicity assays cannot predict all toxicity mechanisms due to the failure of these assays to predict sublethal target-specific electrophysiological liabilities. Identification of seizurogenic and other electrophysiological effects at early stages of the drug development process is important to ensure that safe candidate compounds can be developed while chemical design is taking place, long before these liabilities are discovered in costly preclinical in vivo studies.
