Special manifestations and treatment of rare cases of snoring with special facial features and hearing loss in children.

This current case report describes two rare cases of children with both hearing loss and snoring. Case 1, a 17-month-old male patient, and case 2, an 11-year-old male patient, both presented with nasal obstruction, snoring and hearing loss. Physical examinations showed obvious enlargement of the head circumference and special facial features. The two children underwent otolaryngology examinations, endoscopy, hearing tests, laboratory examinations for bone metabolism markers, cranial computed tomography, X-rays and genome-wide exon sequencing. The first case was diagnosed with craniometaphyseal

Comparing the semantic networks of children with cochlear implants and children with typical hearing: Effects of length of language access.

PURPOSE: Kenett et al. (2013) report that the sematic networks, measured by using an oral semantic fluency task, of children with cochlear implants (CI) are less structured compared to the sematic networks of children with typical hearing (TH). This study aims to evaluate if such differences are only evident if children with CI are compared to children with TH matched on chronological age, or also if they are compared to children with TH matched on hearing age. METHOD: The performance of a group of children with CI on a verbal fluency task was compared to the performance of a group of chronol

Rescue of autosomal dominant hearing loss by in vivo delivery of mini dCas13X-derived RNA base editor.

Programmable RNA editing tools enable the reversible correction of mutant transcripts, reducing the potential risk associated with permanent genetic changes associated with the use of DNA editing tools. However, the potential of these RNA tools to treat disease remains unknown. Here, we evaluated RNA correction therapy with Cas13-based RNA base editors in the myosin VI p.C442Y heterozygous mutation (Myo6C442Y/+) mouse model that recapitulated the phenotypes of human dominant-inherited deafness. We first screened several variants of Cas13-based RNA base editors and guide RNAs (gRNAs) targeting …

School adjustment of adolescents with sequential bilateral cochlear implants in mainstream school.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the school adjustment of adolescents with sequential bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) in mainstream educational settings. This study aims to investigate the school adjustment of adolescents with sequential bilateral CIs, in comparison to those of age-matched adolescents with typical hearing (TH), to explore the relationships between individual variables and school adjustment in the bilateral CI group, and to assess the factors leading to strong school adjustment in the bilateral CI group. METHODS: Twenty-five adolescents with sequential bilateral CIs and 30

Lexical Access in Preschool Mandarin-Speaking Children With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: Children with cochlear implants (CIs) have less experience accessing spoken language. Mandarin Chinese uses pitch information to contrast word meaning, and the signal that the CI devices provide is degraded. Thus, Mandarin-speaking children with CIs may face more challenges in the development of language skills. This study examines preschool Mandarin-speaking children's performance in lexical access. We hypothesized that children with CIs and their peers with normal hearing (NH) have comparable naming ability, but they process phonological or semantic information differently. METHOD:

Electrocochleographic Patterns Predicting Increased Impedances and Hearing Loss after Cochlear Implantation.

OBJECTIVES: Different patterns of electrocochleographic responses along the electrode array after insertion of the cochlear implant electrode array have been described. However, the implications of these patterns remain unclear. Therefore, the aim of the study was to correlate different peri- and postoperative electrocochleographic patterns with four-point impedance measurements and preservation of residual hearing. DESIGN: Thirty-nine subjects with residual low-frequency hearing which were implanted with a slim-straight electrode array could prospectively be included. Intracochlear electroco

Symbolic and deictic gestures as a tool to promote parent-child communication in the context of hearing loss: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Language and communication outcomes in children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (cSNHL) are highly variable, and some of this variance can be attributed to the quantity and quality of language input. In this paper, we build from the evidence that human language is inherently multimodal and positive scaffolding of children's linguistic, cognitive, and social-relational development can be supported by Parent Centered Early Interventions (PCEI), to suggest that the use of gestures in these interventions could be a beneficial approach, yet scarcely explored. AIMS AND METHOD

Non-Syndromic Hearing Loss in a Romanian Population: Carrier Status and Frequent Variants in the GJB2 Gene.

The genetic causes of autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL) are heterogeneous and highly ethnic-specific. We describe GJB2 (connexin 26) variants and carrier frequencies as part of our study and summarize previously reported ones for the Romanian population. In total, 284 unrelated children with bilateral congenital NSHL were enrolled between 2009 and 2018 in northwestern Romania. A tiered diagnostic approach was used: all subjects were tested for c.35delG, c.71G>A and deletions in GJB6 (connexin 30) using PCR-based methods. Furthermore, 124 cases undiagnosed at this stage wer

Does Exposure to Noise During Military Service Affect the Progression of Hearing Loss with Increasing Age?

It is traditionally believed that the effects of exposure to noise cease once the exposure itself has ceased. If this is the case, exposure to noise relatively early in life, for example during military service, should not affect the subsequent progression of hearing loss. However, recent data from studies using animals suggest that noise exposure can accelerate the subsequent progression of hearing loss. This paper presents new longitudinal data obtained from 29 former male military personnel. Audiograms obtained at the end of military service were compared with those obtained at least five y

Prevention and management of hearing loss in patients receiving ototoxic medications.

Following the efforts of patient advocates, the World Health Organization published updated guidelines for management of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in 2018 that advised against the routine use of ototoxic second-line injectable drugs (amikacin, capreomycin and kanamycin). Although hearing loss is no longer considered an unavoidable harm for patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, ototoxic medications continue to be used for several infectious and oncological disorders around the world. These drugs contribute to more than a half a million cases of hearing loss worldwide annually.

Can listening-related fatigue influence well-being? Examining associations between hearing loss, fatigue, activity levels and well-being.

OBJECTIVE: Well-being is influenced by the activities we undertake. Hearing loss may reduce well-being directly through increased listening-related fatigue due to cognitive and emotional strain in challenging situations. Hearing loss and hearing device use may also indirectly impact fatigue and well-being by altering the frequency and type of daily-life activities. This review examines the available literature to help understand the relationships. DESIGN: We provide (i) a summary of the extant literature regarding hearing loss, hearing device use and fatigue in adults, as well as regarding fa

A Comparison of Place-Pitch-Based Interaural Electrode Matching Methods for Bilateral Cochlear-Implant Users.

Interaural place-of-stimulation mismatch for bilateral cochlear-implant (BI-CI) listeners is often evaluated using pitch-comparison tasks that can be susceptible to procedural biases. Bias effects were compared for three sequential interaural pitch-comparison tasks in six BI-CI listeners using single-electrode direct stimulation. The reference (right ear) was a single basal, middle, or apical electrode. The comparison electrode (left ear) was chosen from one of three ranges: basal half, full array, or apical half. In Experiment 1 (discrimination), interaural pairs were chosen randomly (method

Quantitative and Qualitative Perspectives of Siblings of Children With Cochlear Implants.

Purpose The sibling relationship teaches children to navigate social interactions with their peers. However, the presence of an exceptionality, such as hearing loss, in one child can affect the dynamic of this relationship. This article examines quantitative and qualitative effects of having a brother or sister with a cochlear implant (CI) on siblings with typical hearing (TH) to determine how children with TH perceive their sibling with a CI and how having a CI user in the family affects the sibling's activities, emotions, and parental attention. Method Participants include 36 siblings with T
