Fishes, unlike most other vertebrate groups, continue to add sensory hair cells to their ears for much of their lives. However, it is not clear whether the addition ever stops or how the addition of sensory cells impacts hearing ability. In this article, we tested both questions using the zebrafish, Danio rerio. Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common disease for which pediatricians prescribe antimicrobial agents. Direct middle ear (ME) pressure measurements during 24 h and tubal function tests were performed on 11 subjects with the clinical diagnosis patulous Eustachian tube (PET). A case is reported in which a Nucleus 22 channel intracochlear device was implanted a deaf/blind Hungarian adult with discharging ears suffering from Behçet's disease. Preconditioning surgery was employed three months prior to the implantation procedure to ensure a sterile, dry protected environment for the electrodes. One month after implantation, the patient exhibited excellent auditory discrimination capability at the time of the first switch on. We suggest that some deaf/blind individuals may serve as very good candidates for intracochlear implantation.

The behaviour of bone conduction audiograms in the operated and non-operated ears of 200 otosclerotic patients was analysed. The majority (84%) of both operated and unoperated ears showed virtually unchanged bone conduction thresholds throughout the follow-up period (mean follow-up period = 13.4 +/- 5.3 years).
