Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation influences gastric motility: A randomized, double-blind trial in healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been investigated regarding its therapeutic properties in several several conditions such as epilepsy, migraine and major depressive disorder and was shown to access similar neural pathways as invasive vagus nerve stimulation. While the vagus nerve's role in gut motility is physiologically established, the effect of taVNS has scarcely been investigated in humans and yielded conflicting results. Real-time gastric magnetic resonance imaging (rtMRI) is an established reproducible method to investigate gastric motility non-in

Characterization and Miniaturization of Silver-Nanoparticle Microcoil via Aerosol Jet Printing Techniques for Micromagnetic Cochlear Stimulation.

According to the National Institute of Deafness and other Communication Disorders 2012 report, the number of cochlear implant (CI) users is steadily increasing from 324,000 CI users worldwide. The cochlea, located in the inner ear, is a snail-like structure that exhibits a tonotopic geometry where acoustic waves are filtered spatially according to frequency. Throughout the cochlea, there exist hair cells that transduce sensed acoustic waves into an electrical signal that is carried by the auditory nerve to ultimately reach the auditory cortex of the brain. A cochlear implant bridges the gap if

The Use of Spinal Cord Stimulation/Neuromodulation in the Management of Chronic Pain.

Chronic pain causes a tremendous burden on the society in terms of economic factors and social costs. Rates of spinal surgery, especially spinal fusion, have increased exponentially over the past decade. The opioid epidemic in the United States has been one response to the management of pain, but it has been fraught with numerous catastrophic-related adverse effects. Clinically, spinal cord stimulation (SCS)/neuromodulation has been used in the management of chronic pain (especially spine-related pain) for more than two decades. More recent advances in this field have led to new theories and a

A multidisciplinary systematic review of the treatment for chronic idiopathic tinnitus.

The majority of tinnitus patients are affected by chronic idiopathic tinnitus, and almost 60 different treatment modalities have been reported. The present study is a multidisciplinary systematic analysis of the evidence for the different forms of treatment for chronic tinnitus. The results are used to form the basis of an S3 guideline. A systematic search was carried out in PubMed and the Cochrane Library. The basis for presenting the level of evidence was the evidence classification of the Oxford Centre of Evidence-based Medicine. Whenever available, randomised controlled trials were given p

Belief bias and the extinction of induced fear.

Some people show slower extinction of UCS expectancies than other people. Little is known about what predicts such delayed extinction. Extinction requires that people deduce the logical implication of corrective experiences challenging the previously learned CS-UCS contingency. "A strong habitual tendency to confirm beliefs" may therefore be a powerful mechanism immunising against refutation of UCS expectancies. This study investigated whether individual differences in such a belief confirming tendency (a process called "belief bias") may help in explaining individual differences in extinction

Defensive movements evoked by air puff in monkeys.

Electrical stimulation of two connected cortical areas in the monkey brain, the ventral intraparietal area (VIP) in the intraparietal sulcus and the polysensory zone (PZ) in the precentral gyrus, evokes a specific set of movements. In one interpretation, these movements correspond to those typically used to defend the body from objects that are near, approaching, or touching the skin. The present study examined the movements evoked by a puff of air aimed at various locations on the face and body of fascicularis monkeys to compare them to the movements evoked by stimulation of VIP and PZ. The a

External modulation of visual perception in humans.

Static and dynamic contrast sensitivities (sCS and dCS) were evaluated before, during, immediately after and 10 min after anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the occipital cortex of 15 healthy subjects. Using 4 c/d spatial and 4 Hz temporal frequencies significant sCS and dCS loss was found during and immediately after 7 min cathodal stimulation while anodal stimulation had no effect. Ten minutes after the end of the stimulation the sCS and dCS values had reached the baseline levels. Our results show that primary visual functions, such as contrast dete

Transcranial magnetic stimulation confirms hyperexcitability of occipital cortex in migraine.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that the hyperexcitability of occipital cortex neurons may predispose migraine subjects to develop spreading depression, the putative basis of migraine with aura (MwA). To date there is no direct physiologic correlate confirming this in patients. Accordingly, we evaluated the differences in the threshold of occipital cortex excitation between MwA patients and normal controls (C) using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). METHODS: TMS was performed using the Cadwell MES 10 stimulator. A circular coil 9.5 cm in diameter was applied to the occipital scalp (7 cm ab

Ability of obstructed bladders to empty is dependent on method of stimulation.

PURPOSE: To correlate pharmacologic changes that occur in the bladder after a partial outlet obstruction with the bladder's ability to perform work and empty. METHODS: After 2 weeks of partial outlet obstruction, rabbit bladders were stimulated in vitro both isovolumetrically [field stimulation (FS)] and to empty (FS, bethanechol, and KCl). RESULTS: The obstructed bladders were separated into two groups according to their ability to empty when stimulated with FS. Compensated bladders were those that could empty as much as controls. Decompensated bladders emptied significantly less than contr

Varied influence of damage to the motor cortex on precision avoidance and escape reactions in dogs.

The influence of local extirpation of the representation of the forelimb in the motor area of the cortex on the performance of precision elevations of this limb was investigated. Even imprecise avoidance reactions to an acoustic signal did not recover spontaneously. Irregular motoric reactions which were insufficient in amplitude could easily be restored in the course of retraining, but precise movements (both rapid fused, as well as relatively slow stepwise movements) did not recover for at least a half year after the operation. By contrast with this, precise rapid reactions in response to el

Vagal control of transpyloric flow and pyloric resistance.

Vagal control of pyloric resistance was evaluated in anesthetised pigs by recording gastropyloroduodenal motility and transpyloric flow during emptying of a liquid nonnutrient meal. Vagotomy did not modify pyloric resistance or the characteristics of the flow pulses. Electrical stimulation of the distal stumps of cervical or thoracic vagus nerves decreased pyloric resistance and triggered flow pulses of large stroke volume. This was associated with increased fundic tone and pressurization of the antrum. Phentolamine but not propranolol reduced the responses to vagal stimulation. These observat

Drastic changes of ventromedial medulla neuronal properties induced by barbiturate anesthesia. I. Comparison of the single-unit types in the same awake and pentobarbital-treated rats.

By means of single-unit recordings, as we have already performed in other studies, we have found that in the awake, drug-free, freely moving rat, there is only one neuronal class potentially involved in nociception and its control at the ventromedial medulla level (VMM, a structure involved in the spinal descending control systems of nociception): the 'multireceptive multimodal' units. These neurons are always activated by very light mechanical (air puff, light touch) and mechanical (pinch, pin-prick) or thermal noxious stimuli, in addition to an auditory stimulus. During identical VMM penetra

Stapedius reflex growth function in cochlear implant patients.

The growth function of the contralateral stapedius reflex elicited by analog electrostimulation via cochlear implant was investigated in 9 patients and compared to reflex functions obtained for acoustic stimulation in 3 normal-hearing subjects. Sinusoidal signal bursts with the same time pattern were used for the two stimulation modes, the contraction of the middle ear muscle was monitored by sampling the compliance change in the contralateral ear. The reflex amplitudes were found to increase with increasing stimulus intensity in all individuals except in 1 with electrical stimulation. The slo

Glottal adjustment for regulating vocal intensity. An experimental study.

Living canine larynx was insufflated from the transected trachea with and without contractions of the lateral cricoarytenoid, cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles, in order to study the control mechanism of vocal intensity at the glottal level. The contractions of the lateral cricoarytenoid and cricothyroid muscles were simulated with mechanical retraction, while the thyroarytenoid muscle was contracted with electrical stimulation. The vocal intensity (SPL), subglottal pressure and mean flow rate were measured simultaneously, and the aerodynamic power (pressure multiplied by flow rate) and

Enhancing functional motor outcomes in chronic stroke: A systematic review of the growing role of non-invasive brain stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) promotes functional recovery by enhancing neuroplasticity and reorganizing brain networks. It is hypothesized that transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), or intermittent θ-burst stimulation (i-TBS) as well as trans direct current stimulation (tDCS) can modulate synaptic connectivity, through magnetic or electric stimuli, directly on the brain area. This systematic review aims to address the lack of comprehensive syntheses focusing on the comparative effectiveness of NIBS techniques, inclu

Transcranial magnetic stimulation over supramarginal gyrus stimulates primary motor cortex directly and impairs manual dexterity: implications for TMS focality.

Based on human motor cortex, the effective spatial resolution of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is often described as 5-20 mm, because small changes in TMS coil position can have large effects on motor-evoked potentials (MEPs). MEPs are often studied at rest, with muscles relaxed. During muscle contraction and movement, corticospinal excitability is higher, thresholds for effective stimulation are lower, and MEPs can be evoked from larger regions of scalp, so the effective spatial resolution of TMS is larger. We found that TMS over the supramarginal gyrus (SMG) impaired manual dexteri

Postoperative Lead Movement after Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery and the Change of Stimulation Volume.

INTRODUCTION: Lead movement after deep brain stimulation may occur and influence the affected volume of stimulation. The aim of the study was to investigate differences in lead position between the day after surgery and approximately 1 month postoperatively and also simulate the electric field (EF) around the active contacts in order to investigate the impact of displacement on affected volume. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with movement disorders underwent deep brain stimulation surgery (37 leads). Computed tomography at the 2 time points were co-fused respectively with the stereotactic ima

Evaluation of autonomic innervation of the clitoris and bulb.

PURPOSE: Female sexual dysfunction is a common disorder but there are few objective measures of female genital function. We present a novel technique to record electrical activity of the female genital erectile tissue. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We placed concentric needle electrodes in the right clitoral crus and the bulb of 22 healthy women. Following spontaneous activity recording we stimulated the median nerve to activate the sympathetic nervous system. We simultaneously measured evoked activity in the clitoris and bulb, and hand sympathetic skin responses (SSRs). RESULTS: Spontaneous electri

Low-frequency short-time nociceptive stimulation of the greater occipital nerve does not modulate the trigeminal system.

Occipital stimulation in a small group of refractory chronic migraine and cluster headache patients has been suggested as a novel therapeutic approach with promising results. In an earlier study we have shown that a drug-induced block of the greater occipital nerve (GON) inhibits the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR). Now, we sought to examine the effects of low-frequency (3 Hz) short-time nociceptive stimulation of the GON on the trigeminal system. We recorded the nBR responses before and after stimulation in 34 healthy subjects. Selectivity of GON stimulation was confirmed by eliciting somatose
