The mediating effects of adaptive coping and sleep quality in the relationship between trait emotional intelligence and trauma outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Response to trauma varies from post-traumatic distress (PTS) to post-traumatic growth (PTG) seemingly depending on internal and external individual resources. This study examines the relationships among trait Emotional Intelligence (trait EI), sleep quality, adaptive coping, and differential outcomes of trauma, namely PTS and PTG, in adolescents exposed to collective chronic adversities, including the health pandemic and sociopolitical instability. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 612 high school students (323 women) aged between 14 and 21 (M = 16.44, SD = 1.25) from Le

Comprehensive approaches to Traumatic Brain Injury: bridging physical, emotional, and social dimensions for global health care.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a significant global health issue, affecting millions annually and resulting in physical, cognitive, emotional, and social challenges. While medical management, including neurosurgical interventions and rehabilitation, is well-documented, the emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of TBI remain underexplored. This gap in understanding hinders the development of holistic approaches to care. METHOD: This article adopts an interdisciplinary approach, synthesizing existing literature to analyze the multifaceted impacts of TBI, as a narrative

Emotional vulnerability and research capacity in medical postgraduates: toward understanding the reciprocal relationship and proposing targeted interventions.

As a backbone of medical research and clinical services, medical postgraduates require coordinated development of mental wellness and research capacity. In recent years, emotional vulnerability-characterized by poor emotion regulation, low stress resilience, and elevated risks of anxiety and depression-has become prevalent among this population and may impede the advancement of their research capacity. Drawing on resilience theory and educational ecology perspectives, this study develops a three-dimensional "psychological-cognitive-behavioral" analytical framework to examine theoretical associ

Emotional intelligence and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among clinical nurses: a cross-sectional network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clinical nurses are at risk of depression, anxiety, and stress because of high work demands and sustained emotional labor. Emotional intelligence may be related to these negative affective symptoms, but the symptom-level links between emotional intelligence dimensions and specific symptoms remain unclear. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited clinical nurses from hospitals in Southwest China between January 2021 and March 2022 using convenience sampling. A total of 704 clinical nurses were included. Emotional intelligence was assessed using the Wong and Law Emotional Intel

Cognitive-emotional associations between non-restorative sleep and erectile dysfunction: the role of rumination profiles and resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent male health condition that substantially correlates with impaired sexual function and reduced overall quality of life. Non-restorative sleep (NRS), a prevalent subjective sleep disturbance, has recently been identified as an under-recognized factor linked to ED. Nonetheless, the psychological factors involved in the association between NRS and ED remain poorly clarified. Rumination and psychological resilience are two promising psychological variables that may participate in this correlational pathway yet have not been empirically examined

Pathways from adverse childhood experiences to parenting competence: the roles of cognitive emotional regulation and social support.

Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to various physical and psychological problems in adulthood, with their effects even carrying over into the next generation through disrupted parenting. To better address the impact of ACEs, identifying the key mediating and moderating factors that influence parenting outcomes is crucial. Objective: This study examined the relationships among ACEs, adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotional regulation (CER), social support and sense of parenting competence within a sample of Korean mothers of infants. Methods: In this descriptiv

Body Size Discrimination, Family Emotional Climate, and Chronic Health Incidence in Middle Age: A Longitudinal Study.

Body size discrimination has been significantly linked to adverse health outcomes. Although family emotional climate has been shown to influence health outcomes, few studies have tested if various aspects of family emotional climate either buffer or exacerbate chronic disease onset related to size discrimination. Using a subsample of the MIDUS 1 and 2 projects, we conducted a longitudinal analysis to test the relationship between perceived size discrimination, family support, and family strain and likelihood of various adverse outcomes as well as interaction effects between both family support

Emotion recognition from multimodal biosignals: supervised and unsupervised machine learning approaches based on EEG and GSR.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly applied in psychology, particularly in educational and clinical settings, to analyse complex behavioural and physiological data. However, evidence regarding the capacity of multimodal physiological signals to characterise cognitive and emotional processes in ecologically valid higher education environments remains limited. This study explored the potential of supervised and unsupervised ML approaches to analyse multimodal physiological responses elicited by emotional avatars in a real educational context. ME

Psychological Distress, Motor Impulsivity and Love Addiction: The Mediating Role of Emotion Dysregulation in a Gender-Invariant Model.

Psychological distress and motor impulsivity may be key factors associated with love addiction. However, the possible mediating role of specific emotion regulation difficulties in this association needs further research. This study examined the direct and indirect associations of psychological distress and motor impulsivity with love addiction, as well as the potential mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties among a sample of 714 participants (Mage = 26.00, SD = 10.16; 68.2% women). Furthermore, we tested for structural gender invariance. The results indicated that psychological dist

Purpose under pressure: how calling, recovery, emotional regulation and flow shape elite athletic performance.

INTRODUCTION: Athletic performance in professional roller hockey is influenced not only by physical, technical, and tactical factors, but also by psychological resources that help athletes regulate pressure, sustain recovery, and enter optimal performance states. This study examined sport calling as a relatively stable psychological resource for understanding performance under pressure in professional roller hockey. Drawing on a demands-resources perspective applied to sport, we tested whether baseline sport calling was associated with competitive performance directly and indirectly through pe

Parenting on a digital leash: time pressure, parenting guilt, and emotional exhaustion in Chinese dual-earner families.

BACKGROUND: Digital tools are increasingly integrated into parenting, but their psychological costs remain unclear. This study investigates whether digitally-mediated parenting intensity predicts emotional exhaustion among Chinese dual-earner parents, and whether time pressure and parenting guilt mediate this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 713 dual-earner parents from 45 communities across 13 cities in Jiangsu Province, China. Participants completed measures of digital parenting intensity, time pressure, parenting guilt, and emotional exhaustion. We tested

Substance Use Behaviors as Markers of Emotional Dysregulation and Childhood Adversity Among Adult Emergency Department Patients.

Introduction Substance use is frequently encountered in emergency department (ED) visits and may reflect underlying emotional or developmental challenges. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to both emotional dysregulation and later substance use, but this relationship is rarely examined in acute care settings. We investigated whether recent substance use, as measured by the Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS) screening tool, is associated with ACEs, emotional dysregulation, and use of cognitive reappraisal (an adaptive emotion regulation strat

Emotional distress in the Chinese academic context: an integrative mixed-methods study of gratitude, savoring, and cognitive reappraisal.

INTRODUCTION: Chinese university students face escalating mental health challenges, yet the psychological mechanisms that protect against emotional distress remain inadequately understood. This study investigates whether cognitive reappraisal mediates the relationship between positive psychological resources (gratitude and savoring beliefs) and emotional distress in this population. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed with 497 Chinese university students (49.9% female, mean age 20.3 years) recruited from three large public universities in Eastern China. Childhood trauma and suicidal behavior risk: perceived burdensomeness and negative emotional reactivity in a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood traumatic experiences are associated with a wide range of psychological difficulties in adulthood and have also been associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. However, the interpersonal and emotional factors that may be relevant to the association between childhood trauma and suicidal behavior risk remain insufficiently understood. Grounded in the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide, this cross-sectional study examined perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness as parallel interpersonal factors linking childhood trauma to s

Positive emotion as a dynamic organizer in low-intermediate French learners' language learning: A qualitative CDST perspective.

Drawing on a Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) perspective and the PERMA framework, this qualitative multiple-case study investigates the evolution of positive emotion experienced by undergraduate French majors in China who had completed six years of intensive French learning before entering university. In the Chinese context, where non-English foreign languages are typically introduced only at the tertiary level, such learners represent an atypical and underexplored subgroup. The study focuses on how positive emotion changed in a mixed-proficiency university context and how these changes

Parental responsiveness, demandingness, and emotional eating among Chinese college students: the mediating role of interpersonal trust.

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional, online self-report study examined the associations between parenting styles and emotional eating among Chinese college students, with a specific focus on the mediating role of interpersonal trust. Emotional eating-a maladaptive strategy for coping with negative emotions such as anxiety, stress, and sadness-has been linked to psychological distress and adverse physical health outcomes. Guided by a health psychology perspective, we investigated how two core parenting dimensions, responsiveness and demandingness, relate to emotional eating, both directly and indi…

Negative emotional inflexibility underlies biological inflexibility: An ecological momentary assessment and passive digital sensing study.

Emotional flexibility, thought to reflect the ability to adapt to internal and external environmental stimuli, is associated with psychological well-being. Emotional inertia and network density, defined as stability and interconnectedness, respectively, of emotions, are aspects of emotion dynamics that represent low emotional flexibility. Studies examining biological substrates of emotional persistence are largely limited to emotional inertia and non-depressed samples. Heart-rate variability (HRV) is a transdiagnostic biomarker for psychopathology thought to be associated with emotional flexib…
