Mn(II) Acceleration of the Picolinic Acid-Assisted Fenton Reaction: New Insight into the Role of Manganese in Homogeneous Fenton AOPs.

The homogeneous Fe-catalyzed Fenton reaction remains an attractive advanced oxidation process for wastewater treatment, but sustaining the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle at a convenient pH without the costly input of energy or reductants remains a challenge. Mn(II) is known to accelerate the Fenton reaction, yet the mechanism has never been confidently established. We report a systematic kinetic and spectroscopic investigation into Mn(II) acceleration of atrazine or 2,4,6-trichlorophenol degradation by the picolinic acid (PICA)-assisted Fenton reaction at pH 4.5-6.0. Mn(II) accelerates Fe(III) red

Unique Fluorescence Turn-On and Turn-Off-On Responses to Acids by a Carbazole-Based Metal-Organic Framework and Theoretical Studies.

Distinct from predominately known fluorescence quenching (turn-off) detection, turn-on response to hazardous substances by luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) could greatly avoid signal loss and susceptibility to environmental stimulus. However, such detection rarely occurs and lacks theoretical elucidations. Here, we present the first example of unique turn-on and unprecedented turn-off-on responses to a variety of acids by a stable 12-connected hexanuclear Y(III)-cluster-based LMOF material─JLU-MOF111, featuring the nondefault pcu topology. Benefiting from the "pocket" structures fo

Hydrophobic species-enabled acid-base multi-catalysis for stereoselective access to renewable trans-anethole.

trans-Anethole (trans-AN) is widely applied in food, daily necessities, and pharmaceuticals and is typically available from inefficient natural oil extraction or complex organic transformations over mineral acid or noble metals. Here, a green and sustainable route was developed to stereoselectively produce trans-AN (ca. 90% selectivity) over an organic polymeric phosphonate-hafnium catalyst (PAS-Hf) through the cascade transfer hydrogenation and dehydration of biomass-based 4'-methoxypropiophenone (4-MOPP), with an environmental impact factor (E-factor) of 47.73. The porous structure and the e

Ionizing Radiation-Induced DNA Damage Response in Primary Melanocytes and Keratinocytes of Human Skin.

Currently, our knowledge of how different cell types in a tissue microenvironment respond to low and high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation is highly restricted. In this study, a comparative analysis was performed on γ-ray-induced DNA damage and repair in primary human melanocytes and keratinocytes isolated from 3 donors. Our study demonstrates a modest interindividual variability in both melanocytes and keratinocytes in terms of both spontaneous and ionizing radiation (IR)-induced 53BP1 foci formation and persistence. Melanocytes, in general, showed a slightly elevated (1.66-2.79 folds m…

Rice husk-intensified cathode driving bioelectrochemical reactor for remediating nitrate-contaminated groundwater.

To achieve economical and eco-friendly denitrification, rice husk-intensified cathode driving bioelectrochemical reactor (RCBER) was constructed with rice husk as solid-phase carbon source and microbial carrier. Results demonstrated that the application of current improved the utilization of rice husk and enhanced the denitrification, and the quenching of anodic hydroxyl radicals by rice husk also improved the microbial resistance to current. The highest nitrate removal rate as 0.34 mg-N/(L∙d), higher economic benefits, i.e., current efficiency as 31.6% and energy consumption as 2.43 kWh/g NO3

Devising a Polyoxometalate-Based Functional Material as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Hydrogen is the solution to all the problems associated with the energy crisis. Generating hydrogen from water splitting is one of the greener approaches, but it requires an efficient catalyst that is economical for the bulk production of hydrogen. The transition metal-aqua coordination complexes, which are otherwise inactive/unstable for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, can efficiently be utilized for the same by attaching these metal-aqua species on a stable support. With a similar approach, we have synthesized and structurally characterized a two-dimensional polyo

In vivo assessment of OXPHOS capacity using 3 T CrCEST MRI in Friedreich's ataxia.

BACKGROUND: Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by decreased expression of frataxin, a protein involved in many cellular metabolic processes, including mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Our objective was to assess skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism in vivo in adults with FRDA as compared to adults without FRDA using chemical exchange saturation transfer (CrCEST) MRI, which measures free creatine (Cr) over time following an in-magnet plantar flexion exercise. METHODS: Participants included adults with FRDA (n = 11) and healthy adults (n = 25). All

tert-Butylpyridine Coordination with [Cu(dmp)2]2+/+ Redox Couple and Its Connection to the Stability of the Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell.

Cu(I)/(II) complex redox couples in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) are of particular interest because of their low reorganization energy between Cu(I) and Cu(II), which minimizes the potential loss during sensitizer regeneration, thus allowing the open-circuit voltage of the device to go over 1.0 V. However, Cu(I)/(II)-based redox couples are reported to coordinate with 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP), which is a standard additive in the electrolyte, and this is believed to account for the poor durability of a Cu(I)/(II)-based DSSCs. Despite TBP coordination on Cu(I)/(II) complexes are confirmed

Spectroscopic and Theoretical Investigation of Color Tuning in Deep-Red Luminescent Iridium(III) Complexes.

A series of heteroleptic, neutral iridium(III) complexes of the form [Ir(L)2(N^O)] (where L = cyclometalated 2,3-disubstituted quinoxaline and N^O = ancillary picolinate or pyrazinoate) are described in terms of their synthesis and spectroscopic properties, with supporting computational analyses providing additional insight into the electronic properties. The 10 [Ir(L)2(N^O)] complexes were characterized using a range of analytical techniques (including 1H, 13C, and 19F NMR and IR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry). One of the examples was structurally characterized using X-ray diffraction.

Integrated N-Co/Carbon Nanofiber Cathode for Highly Efficient Zinc-Air Batteries.

In order to reduce the charge-transfer resistance, ohmic resistance, and ionic and electronic resistances arising from the polymer binder, designing and constructing self-standing and binder-free porous electrodes are very significant for energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, self-standing and binder-free porous N-Co carbon nanofiber (N-Co/CNF) cathodes are prepared for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) by an in situ electrospinning/plasma-etching method. The morphology and activity of the prepared electrodes are investigated by several characterization techniques. The prepared specimens exhi

Vocal fold contact patterns based on normal modes of vibration.

The fluid-structure interaction and energy transfer from respiratory airflow to self-sustained vocal fold oscillation continues to be a topic of interest in vocal fold research. Vocal fold vibration is driven by pressures on the vocal fold surface, which are determined by the shape of the glottis and the contact between vocal folds. Characterization of three-dimensional glottal shapes and contact patterns can lead to increased understanding of normal and abnormal physiology of the voice, as well as to development of improved vocal fold models, but a large inventory of shapes has not been direc…

Direct Analysis of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil and Aqueous Samples Using Condensed Phase Membrane Introduction Tandem Mass Spectrometry with Low-Energy Liquid Electron Ionization.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are listed as priority pollutants by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA). PAH-contaminated samples often require extensive sample cleanup before analysis, with the method used dependent upon the sample matrix. We present condensed phase membrane introduction mass spectrometry with liquid electron ionization (CP-MIMS-LEI) as a sensitive and universal technique that can directly analyze both aqueous and soil samples for PAHs without the need for sample clean up or instrumental modifications for different matrixes. The method uses a semipe

Gas-Phase Chemistry in the GC Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer.

Gas-phase reactions of temporally stored ions play a significant role in trapped ion mass spectrometry. Especially highly labile ion species generated through electron ionization (EI) are prone to undergo gas-phase reactions after relaxation to a low vibrational state. Here, we show that in the C-Trap of the Q Exactive GC Orbitrap mass spectrometer, gaseous water reacts with radical cations of various compound classes. High-resolution accurate mass spectrometry of the resulting ions provides a key to the mechanistic understanding of the chemistry of high energetic species generated during EI.

Comprehensive proteomics analysis of exosomes derived from human seminal plasma.

Exosomes are membranous nanovesicles of endocytic origin that carry and transfer regulatory bioactive molecules and mediate intercellular communication between cells and tissues. Although seminal exosomes have been identified in human seminal plasma, their exact composition and possible physiologic function remain unknown. The objective of this study was to perform a comprehensive proteomics analysis of exosomes derived from human seminal plasma. Seminal exosomes were isolated and purified from 12 healthy donors using a 30% sucrose cushion-based exosome-isolation protocol, followed by characte
