Background & objectives Antimicrobial resistance has steadily become a grave public health problem worldwide, making carbapenems, often the last choice of antibiotic, for treating infections involving multidrug-resistant Gram-negative organisms. The production of carbapenemases is one of the primary mechanisms responsible for the development of resistance. KPC, NDM, VIM, IMP, and OXA-48-like are the most prevalent carbapenemases. Identification of CROs is based on the resistance phenotype or requires molecular assays, which are not widely available. A lateral flow assay (LFA) has been develope

Mucosal immune responses to enteric bacterial infections are highly coordinated processes that orchestrate host protection while minimizing the potential for immune-triggered pathology. In the intestinal tract, bidirectional communication occurs between the nervous and immune systems to affect local immune responses by modulating the activity of resident and recruited immune cells, and indirectly on the supporting stromal cells. These neuroimmune signaling pathways that alter host defense have focused on specialized sensory innervation and the unique neurotransmitters released from them. Altho

The scope of the antibacterial effects of plasma-activated water (PAW) is not yet fully comprehended. We investigated the activity of PAW produced by the in-house 3-pin atmospheric pressure plasma jet against carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis, with a focus on PAW's potential to promote susceptibility to conventional antibiotics in these bacteria. Bacterial inactivation was determined by the colony count after 15 and 60 min PAW treatments. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) measured following repeated exposures to PAW across multiple

Alternative strategies are urgently required to combat the rise of high-risk carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP), including blaNDM-positive strains that produce carbapenemase enzymes, which deactivate beta-lactam antibiotics and result in poor treatment outcomes. In this study, we isolated a bacteriophage BPK01, targeting a high-risk strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae (carbapenem-resistant, blaNDM-positive, ST147, capsular type K64, biofilm former). BPK01 demonstrated strong lytic activity (84%) against a panel of genetically characterized CRKP strains (n = 59) from clinical specime

OBJECTIVES: The occurrence of OXA-232-producing carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) has been increasing in China during the last five years. The blaOXA-232-carrying CRKP strain's clonal propagation can readily lead to nosocomial epidemics. Here, we report the genome sequence of an OXA-232 and CTX-M-15 co-producing K. pneumoniae strain isolated from a gallbladder infection in China.
METHODS: The genome sequence of K. pneumoniae S105 was determined using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. Antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and plasmid replico

During enterobacterial mixed-acid fermentation, formate is generated from pyruvate by the glycyl-radical enzyme pyruvate formate-lyase (PflB). In Escherichia coli, especially at low pH, formate is then disproportionated to CO2 and H2 by the cytoplasmically oriented, membrane-associated formate hydrogenlyase (FHL) complex. If electron acceptors are available, however, formate is oxidized by periplasmically oriented, respiratory formate dehydrogenases. Formate translocation across the cytoplasmic membrane is controlled by the formate channel, FocA, a member of the formate-nitrite transporter (FN

The emergence and dissemination of the extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae harbouring antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes has diminished the potential options for treating multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. Until now, numerous studies reported the spreading of critical plasmid-borne AMR genes from different sources worldwide. While the knowledge on the occurrence of the plasmid-borne AMR genes, especially mcr genes in the dead chick embryos, remains obscure. A retrospective study was conducted to detect the presence of the mcr genes in forty-five Sal…

Edwardsiellosis, an extremely harmful disease can be caused by Edwardsiella tarda, severely restricts the development of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) farming worldwide, especially in China. This study aimed to establish an effective and feasible prophylaxis by feeding chitosan-alginate coated egg yolk immunoglobulin (IgY) against E. tarda 2CDM001 infections in the process of turbot farming. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays proved that the obtained specific IgY could specifically target E. tarda 2CDM001 and five other E. tarda isolates (1a5p, Hz-s, 1a1s, fs-a1 and 58p8). In-vitro, the bacter

Flies have the capacity to transfer pathogens between different environments, acting as one of the most important vectors of human diseases worldwide. In this study, we trapped flies on a university campus and tested them for mobile resistance genes against colistin, a last-resort antibiotic in human medicine for treating clinical infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Quantitative PCR assays we developed showed that 34.1% of Musca domestica (86/252) and 51.1% of Protophormia terraenovae (23/45) isolates were positive for the mcr-1 gene, 1.2% of M. domestica (3/252) a
