In this study we have optimised the enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) to quantify CD59 antigen in human serum or plasma. The glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked form of CD59 is known to complex with serum high-density lipoprotein. For ELISA optimisation, therefore, we investigated the effect of detergents, added to the sample diluent, on the determined values of CD59. Midkine (MK) is a heparin-binding growth factor implicated in various biological phenomena such as development of the hippocampus and anxiety. We evaluated serum MK levels of drug-naive (n=15) and medicated (n=25) patients with schizophrenia, and age- and sex-matched normal controls (n=38). The patients showed two clusters in the levels. Sera from 14,408 market sows from the Canadian domestic swine herd were tested for trichinellosis using an indirect-ELISA as a screening test and a competitive ELISA for confirmatory testing. Three sera (0.02%) gave low level reactions on the competitive ELISA. These reactions were considered nonspecific, and this designation was supported by data from previous and subsequent national surveys, in which serologic, trichinoscopic, and digestion test methodologies was used. This study provides additional evidence that Canada is free of trichinellosis in domestic swine.

A tetravalent (type A, B, E and F) toxoid was produced and its efficacy and safety were assessed.
