The Neural Bases of Tinnitus: Lessons from Deafness and Cochlear Implants.

Subjective tinnitus is the conscious perception of sound in the absence of any acoustic source. The literature suggests various tinnitus mechanisms, most of which invoke changes in spontaneous firing rates of central auditory neurons resulting from modification of neural gain. Here, we present an alternative model based on evidence that tinnitus is: (1) rare in people who are congenitally deaf, (2) common in people with acquired deafness, and (3) potentially suppressed by active cochlear implants used for hearing restoration. We propose that tinnitus can only develop after fast auditory fiber

Mismatch negativity to different deviant changes in autism spectrum disorders: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Mismatch negativity (MMN) has been continuously used to evaluate the functional integrity of central auditory processing. However, it still remains inconclusive whether patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate reduced MMN responses in all deviant types. METHODS: To reconcile the previous controversial findings, we performed a meta-analysis of peer-reviewed MMN articles concerning ASD. The potential moderators regarding different deviant types, diagnosis, and age on the effect sizes (Hedges' g) were also assessed. RESULTS: Compared to the controls, ASD patients show

The utility of Jerk-locked back averaging technique in diagnosis of generalized myoclonic epilepsy with normal scalp EEG: A case report.

RATIONALE: The diagnosis of myoclonic epilepsy and the classification of generalized or partial type may be challenging, especially when the scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) is normal. In such situation, how to apply another electrophysiological technique to begin the diagnosis and classification? The utility of Jerk-locked back averaging technique has been described in our case. PATIENT CONCERNS: A Chinese patient (male, 21 years old) presented with frequent unilateral or bilateral shoulder-jerking. He has an epilepsy history of complex partial seizure (CPS) or secondary tonic-clonic seizure

The Differential Contribution of the Components of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Emotion Development for Treatment of Preschool Depression.

OBJECTIVE: An adaptation of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) with a novel Emotion Development (ED) module has shown efficacy for the treatment of early childhood depression. Children who received PCIT-ED also showed healthy alterations in neural response to reward. We investigated whether the novel ED module made a unique contribution to the treatment of depression and neural response to reward, and whether child-directed intervention (CDI) and parent-directed intervention (PDI) modules (standard elements of PCIT) were also effective. METHOD: Dyads who participated in a randomized cont

Phonemes, words, and phrases: Tracking phonological processing in pre-schoolers developing dyslexia.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with dyslexia often suffer from deficient segmental phonology, but the status of suprasegmental phonology (prosody) is still discussed. METHODS: In three passive-listening event-related brain potential (ERP) studies, we examined prosodic processing in literacy-impaired children for various prosodic units by contrasting the processing of word-level and phrase-level prosody, alongside segmental phonology. We retrospectively analysed school children's ERPs at preschool age for discrimination of vowel length (phoneme processing), discrimination of stress pattern (word-leve

Cognitive Impairment and Celiac Disease: Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation a Trait d'Union between Gut and Brain?

Celiac disease is a systemic disorder with multifactorial pathogenesis and multifaceted symptomatology. In response to gluten exposure, a significant part of the general population produces antibodies that have been hypothesized to be deleterious to the brain. Among the well-known neurological manifestations, adult celiac patients often complain cognitive symptoms, ranging from the so-called "brain fog" till an overt dementia. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that can contribute to the assessment and monitoring of celiac patients, even in th

Cross-modal phonetic encoding facilitates the McGurk illusion and phonemic restoration.

In spoken language, audiovisual (AV) perception occurs when the visual modality influences encoding of acoustic features (e.g., phonetic representations) at the auditory cortex. We examined how visual speech (mouth movements) transforms phonetic representations, indexed by changes to the N1 auditory evoked potential (AEP). EEG was acquired while human subjects watched and listened to videos of a speaker uttering consonant vowel (CV) syllables, /ba/ and /wa/, presented in auditory-only or AV congruent or incongruent contexts or in a context in which the consonants were replaced by white noise (

Using Mismatch Negativity to Investigate the Pathophysiology of Substance Use Disorders and Comorbid Psychosis.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) have a devastating impact on society and place a heavy burden on health care systems. Given that alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis use have the highest prevalence, further understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of these SUDs is crucial. Electroencephalography is an inexpensive, temporally superior, and translatable technique which enables investigation of the pathobiology of SUDs through the evaluation of various event-related potential components, including mismatch negativity (MMN). The goals of this review were to investigate the effects of acute and chr

Deep brain stimulation induces sparse distributions of locally modulated neuronal activity.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy is a potent tool for treating a range of brain disorders. High frequency stimulation (HFS) patterns used in DBS therapy are known to modulate neuronal spike rates and patterns in the stimulated nucleus; however, the spatial distribution of these modulated responses are not well understood. Computational models suggest that HFS modulates a volume of tissue spatially concentrated around the active electrode. Here, we tested this theory by investigating modulation of spike rates and patterns in non-human primate motor thalamus while stimulating the cerebellar-

Pubertal development and anxiety risk independently relate to startle habituation during fear conditioning in 8-14 year-old females.

Reduced habituation to aversive stimuli has been observed during adolescence and may reflect an underlying mechanism of vulnerability for anxiety disorders. This study examined the startle reflex during a fear-learning task in 54 8-14-year-old girls. We examined the relationship between mean startle, startle habituation, pubertal development, and two measures linked to risk for anxiety: behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and the error-related negativity (ERN). Puberty, BIS, and the ERN were unrelated to mean startle; however, each measure modulated startle habituation. Greater pubertal develop

Dynamic population codes of multiplexed stimulus features in primate area MT.

The middle-temporal area (MT) of primate visual cortex is critical in the analysis of visual motion. Single-unit studies suggest that the response dynamics of neurons within area MT depend on stimulus features, but how these dynamics emerge at the population level, and how feature representations interact, is not clear. Here, we used multivariate classification analysis to study how stimulus features are represented in the spiking activity of populations of neurons in area MT of marmoset monkey. Using representational similarity analysis we distinguished the emerging representations of moving

Cortical responses to tone and phoneme mismatch as a predictor of dyslexia? A systematic review.

Evidence from event-related-potential (ERP) studies has repeatedly shown differences in the perception and processing of auditory stimuli in children with dyslexia compared to control children. The mismatch negativity (MMN) - an ERP component reflecting passive auditory change detection ability - has been found to be reduced, not only in children with a diagnosis of dyslexia, but also in infants and preschool children at risk of developing dyslexia. However, the results are controversial due to the different methods, age of the children and stimuli used. The aim of the present review is to sum
