Erythrocyte membrane proteins in a family of nine with hereditary spherocytosis in Okinawa were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of 0.1% SDS. An abnormality in the membrane protein component band 4.2 (MW 72 kDa) on the electrophoresis was observed. Deficiency in band 4.2 was found in three sibling in the family and a small but significant decrease was noted in three other members. However, change of this component was not found in the remaining members of the family or in normal subjects.

This study compared 51 San Francisco Bay Area family physicians and 47 general internists in their treatment of hypertensive patients. Charts from 2254 patients of these physicians were reviewed. The average age and percentage of board certification of both groups of physicians are similar. Patients of general internists were slightly older than the family practice patients (average age 61 vs 59 years). A process audit was undertaken of 5 stillbirths recorded in a rural family medical practice between 1985-1987. The stillbirth rate for this practice was 81/1000, as opposed to a national rate of only 4.5/1000 (p less than 0.015). The clinic records of the women, both before and during the affected pregnancies were reviewed in detail. Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasias (SED) are a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders characterized by disproportionate short stature and pleiotropic involvement of the skeletal and ocular systems. Primary hypertrophic neuritis (hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy types I and III) can easily be characterized in affected families by nerve conduction measurement. The author reports the first association of central areolar choroidal dystrophy in three brothers with pseudoachondroplastic spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. Both central areolar choroidal dystrophy and pseudoachondroplastic spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia represent heterogeneous disorders with autosomal dominant transmission. It is hypothesized that this association is a result of a new subtype involving both the skeletal system and the eye.

Cancer family history was studied for 43,117 subjects aged 35-79 at the occasion of stomach cancer mass screening and were followed up for 5 years. 376 cases of cancer were notified out of them by the linkage with records of population based cancer registry covering the prefecture. Significantly elevated risk among those with family history was found only for breast cancer (observed 3, expected 0.82).
