OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Astragalus and Angelica on acute renal injury.
METHODS: Using the ischemia/reperfusion model established by blocking blood flow through clamping of bilateral renal artery for 45 min, the changes of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), renal plasma flow (RPF), fractional excretion of sodium (FENa), urinary volume (UV) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) as well as the morphological change of kidney before and after ischemia/reperfusion were observed.

Non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema (NCPE) is a rare entity manifested by pulmonary edema with normal pulmonary arterial pressures. NCPE has been described in children and recently reported in adults. Felodipine is a new dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker with a number of properties that enhance its suitability as a first-line antihypertensive drug for the elderly. Felodipine has a 100-fold selectivity for inhibiting the contribution of vascular smooth muscle compared with cardiac muscle. Three cases of combined heart and kidney transplantation are presented. All three patients suffered from end-stage kidney disease, one chronic glomerulonephritis, two diabetic nephropathy. Ages of the patients were 22, 30, and 39 years, respectively. Two of the patients had the diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy and the third had ischemic heart disease. Patient follow-up is from 6 to 30 months. None of the patients have had a heart rejection and only one has had a kidney rejection. Cardiac and renal function remain excellent in all three patients. A lethal toxin was isolated from the venom of Heloderma h. horridum by gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. Molecular weight of the purified toxin was determined to be 28 kDa under reducing and nonreducing conditions. A pilot study evaluated both the safety and the effect on intraocular pressure control of argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) in eyes with secondary forms of open-angle glaucoma. All patients included in this study had poor IOP control and were considered surgical candidates. The ALT was considered successful if IOP control was sufficient to avoid conventional filtration surgery. Fifty-five eyes of 46 patients were treated. The mean follow-up was 8 +/- 4 months. A cross-sectional survey for Schistosoma haematobium infection in 5,998 individuals, representing 31,803 persons in six rural villages of the Qena governorate, Upper Egypt, was completed. There were 2,223 persons (37.1%) excreting S. haematobium eggs identified by the nuclepore membrane filtration technique of a single urine specimen. Cell suspensions containing an average of 78% lymphocytes were obtained from synovial tissues of 26 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 10 patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Variants of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBA) isolated by inoculation of pig embryo kidney cell cultures (SPEV) with infectious DNA from chronically infected HEp-2-Soph cells produced cytopathic effect in SPEV cell cultures.
