Anterior elbow dislocation is an infrequent lesion, usually produced by direct trauma to the proximal ulna after a fall on the elbow in flexion, and is often associated with soft tissue injuries. The authors report a case of a complex injury produced by a high-energy trauma in the right arm of a 65-year-old patient. His limb was trapped inside an industrial spin-dryer, resulting in a closed anterior elbow dislocation, diaphyseal ulnar shaft, radial styloid process fractures, and an associated compartment syndrome. The injury mechanism and its treatment are described to better manage the soft t

An infected non-union is a major and potentially devastating complication following bone fractures. It is often debilitating for the patients, physically and psychologically, because of its long healing period and emotional toll on patient and caregivers. Different surgical procedures (in one or two stages) are described in literature for its treatment. These range from external fixation (axial or circular) to internal fixation (nails or plates) associated or not with different types of biological support/augmentation (iliac crest bone graft, platelet rich plasma, bone morphogenic protein, etc

BACKGROUND: Multifocal fractures of the femur are uncommon injuries and present unique management challenges. Combined ipsilateral fractures of the femoral shaft and femoral neck or the femoral shaft and distal femur have been described. The combination of noncontiguous ipsilateral femoral neck, femoral shaft, and distal femoral articular injuries, however, has not been described. The purposes of this report are to document the incidence and characteristics of this injury and to present a treatment rationale.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted at a Level I trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Management of unstable anterior pelvic ring fractures has shifted toward minimally invasive fixation techniques. This prospective randomized cohort study compares anterior subcutaneous internal fixator with percutaneous retrograde pubic ramus screw fixation, evaluating radiological outcomes, functional scores, complications, and peri-operative parameters.
METHODS: Fifty adult patients with unstable anterior pelvic ring injuries (Tile B & C; Young-Burgess lateral compression and vertical shear mechanisms) were enrolled between 2023 and 2025 and randomized into two equal groups: gro

BACKGROUND: Posterior internal fixation (PIF) is commonly used in the treatment of thoracolumbar fracture (TLF), but there is still no standard for the number of fixed segments. The objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of short segment (SS), intermediate segment (IS) and long segment (LS) in the fixation of TLF.
METHODS: Two authors independently searched through PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science for studies of thoracolumbar fracture treated by posterior internal fixation, which were published until the end of April 2021. The Aggregate Data

OBJECTIVE: To observe mandibular fracture healing after synthesized bioabsorable poly-para-dioxanone (PDS) ligature fixation.
METHODS: Para-dioxanone monomer was prepared by chemical reactions of metallic sodium, ethylene glycol and other raw materials. PDS was synthesized by polymerizing the purified para-dioxanone in the presence of catalyst under the conditions of negative pressure and certain temperature. PDS ligature was obtained by processing the polymer into small granules, drying and melt-extruding through a spinnerette. Eighteen adult male New Zealand rabbits were assigned randomly i

OBJECTIVE: Syndesmotic instability may coexist with unstable Weber B supination-external rotation (SE) lateral malleolar fractures. Current recommendations suggest that Weber B injuries should not have associated syndesmotic instability after open reduction and internal fixation of the lateral malleolus. The purpose of this study was to evaluate syndesmotic stability with respect to the current recommendations for syndesmotic fixation in Weber B SE pattern lateral malleolar fractures.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort, consecutive series.
SETTING: Academic Level I trauma center.

BACKGROUND: A volar locking plate (VLP) is the most frequently used form of implant used for open reduction and internal fixation of distal radius fractures. They are known to have a complication rate of up to 27%. We hypothesized that plate design could influence complication rates.
METHODS: We performed a review of patients undergoing VLP fixation for distal radius fracture. A total of 228 patients underwent fixation with the Distal Volar Radial Anatomical (DVR) plate; 388 patients underwent fixation with the VariAx plate. Independent observers performed blinded case note and radiographic r

Arthroplasty plays a crucial role in the management of both acute fractures and failed fracture surgeries around the hip, particularly in the aging population. It is important to explore the indications, benefits, and challenges of total hip arthroplasty in various clinical scenarios, including geriatric acetabular fractures, proximal femur fractures, and cases of failed hip fracture surgery. Acute total hip arthroplasty is increasingly recognized as a viable alternative to open reduction and internal fixation in elderly patients with poor bone quality or preexisting arthritis. When treating p

Fractures of the tibia represent a common class of injuries in orthopedics. The blood supply to the tibia is poor due to the small subcutaneous muscle tissues inside. Consequently, the tibia is prone to delayed fracture healing and nonunion of the fracture after surgery. In this case, we used porous tantalum metal plate to treat nonunion of a tibial fracture and achieved satisfactory therapeutic effects. For the first time in the field, we used 3D printing technology to fabricate porous tantalum metal plates for the treatment of tibial fractures. The resulting porous tantalum metal exhibited e

Traditional treatment of complex ankle fracture consists of open reduction and internal fixation. Nevertheless, this treatment can delay fracture healing and cause prolonged oedema. The surgeon should consider necessity of early recovery when treating athletes, especially football players. In this light, it was decided to perform an arthroscopy-assisted percutaneous minimal osteosynthesis of a fibular fracture together with a syndesmotic disruption in order to permit the patient, a 24-year-old male, to resume quicker and easier full sport activities. The outcome was good and allowed patient to

OBJECTIVE: To document a previously undescribed fracture-dislocation of the knee that involves a femoral condyle and associated ligaments yet spares the tibial joint surface.
DESIGN: Retrospective.
SETTING: University.
PATIENTS: Four cases of fracture-dislocation of the knee that involve ligamentous injury and fracture of the femoral condyle(s).
RESULTS: At a minimum two-year follow-up (average 28.8 months, range 26 to 37 months), overall functional outcome is only fair to good in this injury pattern. The Lysholm knee rating averaged 60 (range 39 to 74) and KT-1000 I-N testing averaged thr

A retrospective study of 26 cases of supramalleolar fracture is presented. Types II and III were most common. All but the one had accompanying fibular fracture. The incidence of open fracture was 41.7% (10/24). The most common mechanism of injury was a high energy impacting force in the direction of axial compression. The supramalleolar fracture was subgrouped into four types. Twenty patients were treated by closed reduction and cast immobilization for an average of five months, six by open reduction and internal fixation, and two by skeletal traction in the early course of treatment. Of the 2

PURPOSE: Carrying out osteosynthesis is challenging, and controlling for results and complications is necessary to define the limits of acceptable complications. Within the context of sudden-onset disasters, comparing internal with external osteosynthesis remains controversial.
METHODS: The most recent and significant Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) experience with osteosynthesis was following the earthquake in Haiti in 2010: 353 external fixators were used in the 12 months following the catastrophe, 62 of which were used in the first month. Carrying out internal osteosynthesis was possible tw
