Successful one-lung ventilation in a patient after laryngectomy by inserting a long spiral single-lumen tube into the left main bronchus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Patients who have had laryngectomy require a thorough preoperative assessment for potential stomal stenosis, and an action plan for possible inadvertent displacement of the voice prosthesis (VP) must be considered. We report the anesthetic management of a post-laryngectomy patient undergoing lung resection surgery. The patient had both a laryngectomy and a VP in situ. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 66-year-old man with Parkinson's disease, who had previously undergone total laryngectomy for supraglottic laryngeal cancer, had a cuffed tracheostomy tube and a VP inserted into the tracheoesopha

Procedure-specific acute pain trajectory after elective total hip arthroplasty: systematic review and data synthesis.

BACKGROUND: For most procedures, there is insufficient evidence to guide clinicians in the optimal timing of advanced analgesic methods, which should be based on the expected time course of acute postoperative pain severity and aimed at time points where basic analgesia has proven insufficient. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of the literature of analgesic trials for total hip arthroplasty (THA), extracting and pooling pain scores across studies, weighted for study size. Patients were grouped according to basic anaesthetic method used (general, spinal), and adjuvant analgesic interv

Emergence agitation after intraoperative neurolytic celiac plexus block with alcohol: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Emergence agitation after general anesthesia may cause several undesirable events in the clinic during patient anesthesia recovery, and acute alcohol intoxication, while rare in surgery, is one of the risk factors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old male patient was found to have pancreatic tail neoplasm upon computed tomography (CT) examination. The surgeon planned to resect the pancreatic tail under general anesthesia. However, the surgeon found extensive tumor metastasis in the abdominal cavity, and thus performed a neurolytic celiac plexus block (NCPB) with 40 ml 95% ethyl alcoh

[Evaluation of the clinical efficacy of urethroplasty after failed hypospadias repair].

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of surgical treatment of hypospadias is one of the most controversial problem in urology, considering a lack of continuity in the management of these patients between pediatric andrologists and general urologists. Patients who undergone to multiple hypospadias repairs remain one of the most difficult categories for reconstructive urethral surgery and urology in general. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The treatment results of 112 adult patients who had complications of previously performed hypospadias repairs were evaluated. The results of repeated procedures were compared in pa

Characteristics of children less than 2 years of age undergoing anaesthesia in Denmark 2005-2015: a national observational study.

There are few data available that describe the current anaesthetic management of children. We have analysed anaesthetic practice and peri-operative complications for children in Denmark aged less than two years. We conducted a population-based observational cohort study using the Danish Anaesthesia Database to identify children who received anaesthesia in hospital from 1 January 2005 until 31 December 2015. Data were combined with that from the Danish National Patient Registry and the Danish Civil Registration System. Age, sex, height, weight, ASA physical status, days in hospital before anaes

Surgery Versus Transcatheter Interventions for Significant Paravalvular Prosthetic Leaks.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess the relative merit of surgical correction (SC) versus transcatheter reduction on long-term outcomes in patients with significant paravalvular leak (PVL) refractory to medical therapy. BACKGROUND: PVL is the most frequent dysfunction following prosthetic valve replacement. Although repeat surgery is the gold standard, transcatheter reduction (TR) of PVL has been associated with reduced mortality. METHODS: From 1994 to 2014, 231 patients underwent SC (n = 151) or TR (n = 80) PVL correction. Propensity matching and Cox proportional hazards regression mode
