Atherosclerosis knowledge - diagnosis and management in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death worldwide. Ischaemic stroke, coronary heart disease (CHD), and peripheral artery disease (PAD) are different forms of atherosclerotic disease. Knowledge among general practitioners (GPs) about the three main locations of atherosclerosis has never been conjointly explored in a single study. The aim of this survey was to compare GP awareness on the subject of these three different clinical presentations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 2017 and May 2017, a self-administered survey was emailed to 18,500 French GPs. The questionnai

Factors Associated With Utilization of Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Patients With Ischemic Heart Disease in the Veterans Health Administration: A QUALITATIVE STUDY.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with ischemic heart disease but are vastly underutilized in the United States, including the Veterans Health Administration (VA) Healthcare System. Numerous barriers affecting utilization have been identified in other health care systems, but the specific factors affecting Veterans are unknown. We sought to identify barriers and facilitators associated with utilization of CR in VA facilities. METHODS: We performed a qualitative study of 56 VA patients, providers, and CR program managers at 30 VA facili

Barriers to treatment seeking for anxiety disorders: initial data on the role of mental health literacy.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders represent the single largest mental health problem in the United States [Greenberg et al., 1999. J Clin Psychiatry 60:427-435; Rice and Miller, 1998. Br J Psychiatry 173:4-9]. However most individuals with anxiety disorders never seek treatment [Henderson et al., 2002. Can J Psychiatry 47:819-824; Mojtabai et al., 2002. Arch Gen Psychiatry 59:77-84; Roness et al., 2005. Acta Psychiatr Scand 111:51-58]. Deficits in the ability to recognize anxiety disorders and beliefs about them, (i.e., "mental health literacy") may contribute to low levels of help seeking. METHO

The effect of West Nile virus perceptions and knowledge on protective behavior and mosquito breeding in residential yards in upstate New York.

A knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) questionnaire combined with entomological surveys of residential mosquito-breeding sites were conducted in two Upstate New York neighborhoods. We tested the hypothesis that "correct" West Nile virus (WNV) knowledge and perceptions correspond with the use of practices that prevent mosquitoes from breeding and biting. Our results demonstrate that perceptions of WNV relate to the number of positive containers in yards and the use of mosquito preventive measures. In contrast, WNV knowledge was not related. Culex pipiens and Cx. restuans were common speci

Perceived relative clinical significance of the risks of venous thromboembolism and bleeding from pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis in children: an international survey of pediatric providers: communication from the ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Pediatric and Neonatal Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

BACKGROUND: In the absence of robust data, the decision to provide primary pharmacologic thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized children depends on the perceived risks of hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE), balanced against the acceptable bleeding risk from thromboprophylaxis. OBJECTIVES: We aimed (1) to determine the perceived relative clinical significance of HA-VTE and bleeding from thromboprophylaxis among pediatric providers, and (2) to determine patient and provider characteristics that modify this perception. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among pediatric pr

New york city physicians' views of providing long-acting reversible contraception to adolescents.

PURPOSE: Although the US adolescent pregnancy rate is high, use of the most effective reversible contraceptives-intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implantable contraception-is low. Increasing use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) could decrease adolescent pregnancy rates. We explored New York City primary care physicians' experiences, attitudes, and beliefs about counseling and provision of LARC to adolescents. METHODS: We conducted in-depth telephone interviews with 28 family physicians, pediatricians, and obstetrician-gynecologists using an interview guide based on an implementati

Melanoma high-risk families' perceived health care provider risk communication.

BACKGROUND: Families with a melanoma history are at risk of melanoma. Melanoma survival improves when people are aware of their risk and ways to modify it. We explored at-risk families' perceived risk communication from healthcare providers. METHODS: Qualitative description. RESULTS: Participants perceived: (1) few provider discussions of melanoma risk or risk-modifying behaviors; (2) a desire to trust information from providers; (3) the healthcare system constrains communication; and (4) concerns about provider competence and caring regarding worrisome lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Providers shoul

Adolescent contraception: survey of attitudes and practice of health professionals.

In Nigeria, there is a persistent reluctance to provide adolescents with contraceptives and this is based largely on the premise that the culture does not support pre-marital sexual activity. However, several studies have revealed that a large number of adolescents are experiencing early sexual debut, some as early as 13 years. Furthermore, mortality resulting from termination of unwanted pregnancies is on the increase among Nigerian adolescents. The aim of this study is to assess the attitudes and practice of health workers in Ibadan regarding adolescent contraception. A structured questionna

Association between infant feeding practices, COVID-19 related cognitive factors, and postpartum depression during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional online study in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Maternal beliefs towards COVID-19 vaccine safety may be associated with infant feeding practice and postpartum depression (PPD). Since there is a paucity of studies, this study aims to identify associations of COVID-19-related cognitive factors (e.g., COVID-19-vaccination-related belief and COVID-19-related knowledge and attitude) with infant feeding practices and their associations with PPD during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thai postpartum mothers. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 840 postpartum mothers whose infants were less than or equal to 6 months o

Exploring factors associated with primary healthcare providers' attitudes towards HIV services provision in Georgia.

BACKGROUND: Primary health care (PHC) providers play a key role in delivering essential care to people living with HIV (PLWH). In Georgia, as in the Eastern European and Central Asian (EECA) region, the HIV epidemic is associated with rising life expectancy and increasing chronic disease comorbidity among PLWH due to improved access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). These evolving dynamics call for a more inclusive approach to HIV care, addressing the diverse needs of those affected. Strengthening the capacity of PHC providers to deliver integrated care can enhance healthcare systems' responses
