Context Matters: Urban Typology and Pandemic-Related Mental Health Decline in Low-Income South African Settings.

AIM: We explored the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on self-reported mental health and perceived social and economic challenges in very-low- to low- to middle-income households in four urban typologies in South Africa: formal township dwellings, backyard dwellings, inner-city high-density apartments, and informal settlement dwellings. The purpose was to inform urban policy and crisis-response planning. METHODS: Structured interviews were conducted with 1330 adults from a stratified random sample from each urban typology during the third SARS-CoV-2 wave. RESULTS: Respondents reporte

Temporal Trends and Geographic Clustering of U.S. Weather-Related Disasters (1989-2019): A Foundational Baseline for Healthcare Preparedness.

Over the past three decades, the United States has experienced a notable increase in weather-related disasters, including hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, wildfires, and severe storms, posing growing challenges to healthcare preparedness and public health systems. This study analyzes Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declarations from 1989 to 2019 to characterize temporal and geographic trends in weather-related events. Data after 2019 were excluded to avoid confounding effects associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted disaster declarations, resource allocation, an

Site-Dependent Dynamic Life Cycle Assessment of Human Health Impacts from Industrial Air Pollutants: Inhalation Exposure to NOx, SO2, and PM2.5 in PVC Window Manufacturing.

Industrial air emissions are major contributors to human exposure to toxic pollutants, posing significant health risks. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is increasingly used to quantify human toxicity impacts from industrial processes. Conventional LCA often overlooks spatial and temporal variability, limiting its ability to capture actual inhaled doses and exposure-driven impacts. To address this, we developed a site-dependent dynamic LCA (SdDLCA) framework that integrates conventional LCA with Enhanced Structural Path Analysis (ESPA) and atmospheric dispersion modeling. Applied to the production

Using the Nominal Group Technique to Inform Approaches for Enhancing Men's Utilization of Sexual and Reproductive Health Services.

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services' underutilization by men remains a global public health challenge. SRH problems constitute major health challenges in that they form almost one-seventh of the disease burden and contribute to higher and earlier morbidity among men. We, therefore, invited subject matter experts to collaborate in co-creating intervention strategies to enhance men's utilization of SRH services. We employed the nominal group technique (NGT) for data collection. The NGT is a structured method that involves gathering a group of people to discuss a problem for the purpose

Exploring the Epidemiology of Atrial Fibrillation in Nigeria: A Focus on Atrial Fibrillation in Heart Failure Patients and Its Association With Stroke.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents a significant global public health concern, particularly due to its association with adverse health outcomes such as stroke and heart failure. In Nigeria, where the burden of cardiovascular diseases is rising, understanding the prevalence and impact of AF is crucial for effective healthcare planning and intervention strategies. This review examines the epidemiology of AF in Nigeria, comparing it with global and African data. It explores demographic and regional variations, comorbidity factors, and the impact of AF on the healthcare system, mortality, and qua

Adapting the informed push model to the last mile of the contraceptive supply chain in South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), contraceptive security is one of the largest barriers to improving access to family planning. This article presents findings from a pilot study that adapted an informed push distribution model to the last mile of the contraceptive supply chain, between the health zone pharmacy and health facilities, in the eastern region of DRC. The intervention consisted of three changes in the supply chain: organization of more efficient transportation routes, in-depth involvement of the community in supply chain management and bundling of contraceptives with other

The Need for Historical Fluency in Pandemic Law and Policy.

The primary claim of this essay is that historical fluency is required for effective work in crafting legal and policy interventions as a part of public health emergency preparedness and response (PHEPR). At a broad level, public health law is explicitly recognized as a key systems-level component of PHEPR practice.1 This essay therefore focuses on the extent to which historical fluency is necessary or at least useful to all aspects of PHEPR that draw on or deploy legal and policy mechanisms (e.g., design, planning, implementation, dissemination, monitoring and evaluation, etc.). The essay col

Anticipated Psychological or Behavioral Reactions to Learning Alzheimer Biomarker Results: Associations With Contextual Factors.

BACKGROUND: As Alzheimer disease (AD) biomarker testing becomes more widely available, adults may opt to learn results. Considering potential reactions to learning biomarker results can guide prebiomarker and postbiomarker testing education and counseling programs. METHODS: Cognitively healthy adults enrolled in observational Alzheimer research responded to a telephone survey about learning AD risk information (n=334; 44% Black or African American; mean age=64.9±7.0). Multiple linear regression models tested if contextual factors predicted anticipated psychological impact (distress, stigma, a

The Likelihood of Preventing Respiratory Exacerbations in Children and Adolescents with either Chronic Suppurative Lung Disease or Bronchiectasis.

Chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD) and bronchiectasis in children and adolescents are important causes of respiratory morbidity and reduced quality of life (QoL), also leading to subsequent premature death during adulthood. Acute respiratory exacerbations in pediatric CSLD and bronchiectasis are important markers of disease control clinically, given that they impact upon QoL and increase health-care-associated costs and can adversely affect future lung functioning. Preventing exacerbations in this population is, therefore, likely to have significant individual, familial, societal, and hea

The State of Opioid Agonist Therapy in Canada 20 Years after Federal Oversight.

Opioid agonist therapy was introduced in Canada in 1959 with the use of methadone for the treatment of opioid dependence. The regulation of methadone was the responsibility of Health Canada until 1995, when oversight was transferred to the provincial health systems. During the more than 20 years since the federal health authority transferred oversight of methadone to the provincial level, methadone programming has evolved differently in every province. The landscape of opioid dependence treatment is varied across the country, with generally increasing treatment capacity in all provinces and dr

Prevention of lifestyle-related disease: general practitioners' views about their role, effectiveness and resources.

An interview survey of GPs working within one district health authority was carried out in order to examine their views on the prevention of lifestyle-related disease. The 48 doctors (89%) who took part considered that prevention was an important part of their work, but were cautious about their effectiveness and over achieving change in many of their patients. Many expressed considerable concern about their ability to cope with the anticipated workload and the conflict with curative work, particularly when considering numbers of staff that could be made available. The views of the doctors in
