Peripapillary choroidal vascularity quantification and characterization in healthy individuals.

INTRODUCTION: To characterize the peripapillary choroidal vasculature in healthy individuals using the choroidal vascular index (CVI), a previously established more robust tool of measurement of choroidal vascularity than choroidal thickness. METHODS: The peripapillary choroid in healthy individuals was analyzed using optical coherence tomography. OCT B-scan were analyzed using automated binarization, a previously established technique. This separates the choroidal layer into the stromal and vascular areas. Choroidal vascular index (CVI), the vascular area/total area, was computed for each im

Anti-Mullerian hormone serum level as a predictive marker of ovarian function in Taiwanese women.

BACKGROUND: Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), which is secreted by preantral and small antral follicles, has been found to be a valuable marker of ovarian reserve. The purpose of this study was to determine age-related changes in AMH levels that occur in Taiwanese women and to determine whether measuring AMH is a highly sensitive and specific tool for diagnosing polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in Taiwanese women. METHODS: A group of 59 healthy, fertile, regularly cycling women, a second group of seven patients with premature ovarian failure or menopause, and a third group of 45 PCOS patients w

Chemical control stability in the elderly.

The prevalence of central apnoea and periodic breathing is increased in the elderly. This implies that the chemical control of breathing might become less stable with ageing. To investigate this, we measured loop gain in healthy elderly individuals using proportional assist ventilation. Loop gain is an engineering term that describes the stability of a system controlled by feedback loops, such as the respiratory control system. A loop gain close to zero indicates a stable system, whereas a loop gain close to or greater than one indicates an unstable system. Eleven healthy elderly subjects were

Assessing thymopoiesis in patients with common variable immunodeficiency as measured by T-cell receptor excision circles.

BACKGROUND: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is one of the most common primary immune deficiencies. The immunologic hallmark of CVID is failure of B-cell differentiation and impaired secretion of immunoglobulins. However, there is mounting evidence of accompanying T-cell dysregulation, which could be due to abnormal thymic function because the thymus plays a crucial role in T-cell development. Recently, it was shown that the human thymus remains functional well into adulthood. Current data show that the level of T-cell receptor excision circles (TRECs) correlates well with active thymop

Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in young children.

Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) has many advantages for the diagnosis and follow-up of hypertension at all ages. This technique has so far not been documented as applicable to the very young. We studied the feasibility of ABPM in 61 healthy children and in 40 patients with renal diseases and/or hypertension, aged less than 6 years. A satisfactory ABPM profile (recording time = 24 h and > 30 good recordings) was obtained in 77% of the healthy children. The mean number of good blood pressure (BP) measurements per 24 h increased with age from 46 (3-4 years) to 58 (6 y

Fixel-based analysis links white matter characteristics, serostatus and clinical features in limbic encephalitis.

Limbic encephalitis (LE) is an autoimmune syndrome often associated with temporal lobe epilepsy. Recent research suggests that particular structural changes in LE depend on the type of the associated antibody and occur in both mesiotemporal gray matter and white matter regions. However, it remains questionable to what degree conventional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-methods reflect alterations in white matter microstructure, since these methods do not account for crossing fibers. To address this methodological shortcoming, we applied fixel-based analysis as a novel technique modeling distinc

Association between lactoferrin gene polymorphisms and aggressive periodontitis among Taiwanese patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A dramatic difference in the frequencies of the Lys/Arg single nucleotide polymorphism in the lactoferrin genotype between a small population of patients with localized juvenile periodontitis and healthy subjects has been reported. As the single nucleotide polymorphism could be associated with ethnicity, the present study aimed to investigate the association between polymorphisms of the lactoferrin gene and periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-five patients with aggressive periodontitis, 278 with chronic periodontitis and 88 healthy controls were genotyped for

Charting Cervical Spinal Cord Morphometry Across the Lifespan.

Spinal cord morphometry provides essential biomarkers of neurological health, but clinical interpretations are confounded by inter-subject variability and a lack of normative references across the full human lifespan. We address this gap by generating the first comprehensive lifespan charts for cervical spinal cord morphometry. From 78,269 T1-weighted brain MRI sessions, we identified a final cross-sectional cohort of 24,251 healthy or cognitively normal controls from 33 datasets (ages 0-100 years) with cervical cord coverage. To overcome contrast variability, we employed a state-of-the-art co

Brain health in older adults: At the crossroads of frailty and resilience.

Brain health is a state of physiological functioning of the organ that allows individuals to fully achieve their age-related potential. Throughout life, a wide range of endogenous and exogenous factors can influence positively and negatively brain health. Among them, age is undoubtedly one of the most important, particularly for its effect on brain's cognitive functions. Pathological cognitive decline is characterized by anatomical changes in areas involved in memory, execution, and reasoning, which may result from various mechanisms such as mitochondrial dysfunction, altered proteostasis, and

Benchmarking 3D U-Net Variants for Volumetric Segmentation of the Substantia Nigra and Brain Ageing related Analysis using 7T MRI.

Accurate segmentation of the substantia nigra (SN) is essential for assessing its structural integrity and volumetric changes in Parkinson's disease and brain aging. However, it remains challenging due to SN's small size, deep location, and low contrast on conventional MRI. This study benchmarked six U-Net variants baseline 3D U-Net, ResU-Net, SE-U-Net, Attention U-Net, U-Net++, and U-Net 3+ for SN segmentation using ultra-high-field 7T T1-weighted MP2RAGE images from the ATAG dataset (53 healthy subjects: 31 train, 7 validation and 15 test). Performance was evalauted with Dice score, IoU, 95%

A Time-Resolved Single-Cell Atlas Reveals Infection-Status, Age-, and Sex-Dependent Immune Responses Drive Viral Disease Severity.

The majority of mortality during viral infections occurs in older males; however, underlying mechanisms by which age and sex shape antiviral immunity and pathological inflammatory responses remain incompletely understood. Here, we performed time-resolved single-cell RNA sequencing across 16 conditions spanning age, sex, and four stages of influenza infection in mice, generating a high-resolution atlas. Aged mice demonstrate delayed antiviral and inflammatory responses in multiple myeloid cells, impairing viral clearance, which delays recovery. Similarly, endothelial cells from aging mice show

Nurse-led pathways for loneliness and social isolation in older adults: a narrative review of assessment, relational mechanisms, and implementation.

Loneliness and social isolation in later life are major public health concerns that can compromise emotional wellbeing, participation, function, quality of life, and healthy aging. Intervention effects nevertheless remain heterogeneous and difficult to translate into routine services. This narrative review addresses a specific gap left by modality-based syntheses: how nursing assessment, relational work, and service implementation can be assembled into an accountable pathway from detection to sustained connection. A PubMed/MEDLINE search through 19 June 2026 was supplemented by focused publish…

Reversing liver sinusoidal endothelial aging restores clearance of amyloid-beta and LDL.

In healthy liver, large macromolecules pass freely into the space of Disse through liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LSEC) fenestration. In aging, LSEC fenestration is largely lost (pseudocapillarization). We hypothesized that restoring aged LSECs' fenestration would enhance passage into the space of Disse of large-diameter (>50 nm) triglyceride-rich lipoproteins to which the majority of circulating amyloid-beta is bound and permit hepatocyte uptake of amyloid-beta: in aged rats, two weeks of the soluble guanylate cyclase activator cinaciguat restored fenestration; circulating amyloid-beta 40
