INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori, a common cause of gastritis and peptic ulcer, has been associated with several extragastrointestinal diseases. Many studies have shown a positive relation between H. pylori infection and both chronic idiopathic urticaria and atopic dermatitis.
METHODS: The study included 20 patients diagnosed with chronic idiopathic urticaria and 20 with atopic dermatitis. A randomized sample of 20 healthy individuals was selected as a control group. H. pylori infection was assessed using the C-urea breath test, and anti-H. pylori IgG antibody titers were determined by enzym

We studied the effect of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication in 43 consecutive H. pylori-infected patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. H. pylori was eradicated with antibiotics in 41 of them (95.3%). The difference between the mean platelet count before and after therapy was statistically significant (54.3 x 10(9)/l vs. 119.1 x 10(9)/l; P < 0.001). A sustained remission was observed in 20 patients (48.8%), after a median follow-up of 31.2 months. None of the patients still infected by H. pylori after therapy reached normal platelet values. The long-term follow-up confirms

The cause of interstitial cystitis (IC) is still unknown. Several features suggest that it may be an infectious disease and it has compelling similarities to chronic gastritis. The identification of Helicobacter pylori as the cause of chronic gastritis focused attention on this organism. Many studies have been done investigating the role of H. pylori in the etiology of IC. Previous studies mostly determined the presence of H.pylori with antibodies in the serum samples of IC patients, but these methods may lead to false positive or negative results. We therefore investigated the presence of H.p

28 patients with chronic antral gastritis, 22 patients with duodenal peptic ulcer and 16 healthy persons underwent morphological and functional examination of fundus glands before and after eradication of H. pylori in. According to the findings, patients with H. Pylori invasion had malfunction of fundus glands enhancing aggressive properties of gastric content due to increasing in number of main and parietal cells, decreasing in number of supplementary glandular cells and thus inappropriate protective function of gastric mucosa. H. pylori eradication has brought to adequate number of cells in

Helicobacter pylori causes a persistent infection in the human stomach, which can result in chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Despite an intensive proinflammatory response, the immune system is not able to clear the organism. However, the immune escape mechanisms of this common bacterium are not well understood. We investigated the interaction between H. pylori and human dendritic cells. Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen-presenting cells and important mediators between the innate and acquired immune system. Stimulation of DCs with different concentrations of H. pylori for 8, 2

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) resistance to metronidazole among three populations in Yunnan.
METHODS: Susceptibilities to metronidazole among 109 H. pylori strains (33 H. pylori strains from Han, 31 H. pylori strains from Bai and 45 H. pylori strains from Naxi ethnic populations) were tested by Epsilometer test (E-test).
RESULTS: In 109 H. pylori strains, the overall metronidazole resistance rate was 67.89%. There were no significant difference in the metronidazole resistant rates of H. pylori among Han, Bai, Naxi populations Yunnan in terms of the d

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have suggested that the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with ulcer disease who were not using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been overestimated. The decreasing prevalence of H. pylori could lead to a relative increase in the number of patients with this idiopathic peptic ulcer disease (IPUD). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of IPUD and any possible trends.
DESIGN AND METHODS: The reports of all upper gastro-intestinal endoscopies performed in a Dutch regional hospital over the period 1991 to 1998 were review

Upper endoscopy is often performed in patients undergoing bariatric procedures. Various pathologies may be found during upper endoscopy that may change treatment plans for these patients. This study tested the hypothesis that routine use of upper endoscopy is necessary before laparoscopic gastric bypass. All patients in a 6-month period who underwent laparoscopic gastric bypass for the treatment of morbid obesity were reviewed. Demographic data, body mass index (BMI), operative reports, upper endoscopies, and Helicobacter pylori results were reviewed. Documentation of polyps, ulcerations, and

Polymorphisms of the IL-1B and IL-1RN genes (which encode interleukin [IL]-1beta and IL-1 receptor antagonist, respectively) have been associated with hypochlorhydria and gastric cancer. We investigated the influence of bacterial virulence factors and host IL-1 polymorphisms on the development of histologic abnormalities in 210 Helicobacter pylori-infected patients with chronic gastritis. cagA(+)/vacAs1(+) H. pylori strains were associated with intestinal metaplasia (IM), atrophic gastritis (AG), and severe inflammation. Carriers of the proinflammatory IL-1B -511T/-31C and IL-1RN*2 alleles had

BACKGROUND: The family is the core unit for Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection. In most instances, Hp colonization occurs in early childhood, and correlates with socioeconomic parameters. Helicobacter pylori infection is highly prevalent in many countries, and may cause chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer in adults and in children. Gastritis induced by Hp may be associated with recurrent abdominal pain in children, and eradication of the bacterium may improve the clinical symptoms. AIM The primary aim of this study is to characterize the group of pediatric patients according to the referral pat

The presence of spiral-shaped micro-organisms in the human stomach was described over 100 years ago by Polish clinical researcher, Professor W. Jaworski at Cracow Jagiellonian University. Their presence was then confirmed in animals by G. Bizzazero, but was not really taken seriously until the late 1970s, when J.R. Warren, a pathologist in Perth, Australia, noted the appearance of spiral bacteria overlaying gastric mucosa, chiefly over inflamed tissue. Warren and B.J. Marshall cultured these organisms in 1982 from 11 patients with gastritis and were able to demonstrate a strong association bet

It has been suggested that certain histological criteria may serve to indicate a good prognosis in patients with esophageal carcinoma. These include absence of subepithelial extension of the carcinoma cells, stage no higher than m2, and no neoplastic involvement near the resection margin. As endoscopic mucosal resection is becoming an accepted treatment option in this type of tumor, prognostic parameters of this type are of particular interest. By contrast, when metastases are detected in the celiac lymph nodes, it implies that the tumor is unresectable and that palliative treatment is require

A 39-year-old woman had been investigated elsewhere due to symptomatic hypokalaemia, renal potassium wasting and metabolic alkalosis. Vomiting was considered to be the underlying cause but the patient repeatedly denied this behaviour. After extensive investigations, Bartter's syndrome was finally diagnosed. Eighteen months later the patient was readmitted due to progressive renal insufficiency. On the basis of a very low urinary chloride excretion and the aforementioned laboratory results, it was concluded that the metabolic disturbances were due to vomiting and the diagnosis of Bartter's synd

Helicobacter pylori eradication failure generally concerns between 10 and 30% of the patients. When eradication failure occurs, it is necessary a) to try to identify the potential causes, b) to confirm the indication of eradicating H. pylori, and c) to choose a second line therapeutic strategy. Among the factors most frequently associated with failed eradication, are poor compliance, younger age, smoking, and weak gastric inflammatory activity. The major factor of resistance is related to the sensitivity of the bacterial strain to antibiotics used. In France, resistance to clarithromycin is ar

For a long time heartburn was not considered a symptom for serious illness. By now, however, it is accepted that the incidence of secondary carcinoma of the esophagus caused by chronic GERD has increased dramatically since the nineteen-seventies. Mechanisms leading to GERD are complex and its incidence is not necessarily pathological. However pathological reflux in the lower esophagus (pH lower than 4 in 6 % of 24 hours), caused by decreased sphinctertonus, impaired peristalsis and clearance of the esophagus, may lead to complications. Helicobacter pylori may play a key role in GERD. There is

A distinctive gastritis precedes the development of cancer distal to the cardia. Helicobacter pylori infection and the use of pickled foods as substitutes for fresh fruits and vegetables constitute the most important environmental factors that generate this gastritis. This review describes the anatomical changes that characterise the step-by-step evolution of a process that begins in childhood and culminates in invasive cancer in middle and old age. Progression of the gastritis can be followed by measuring the host antibody response to the H. pylori infection and by serum assays that indicate
