Modulation of lower limb joint stiffness during a Half-Marathon in male runners with Varying Degrees of arch support.

This study aimed to determine the effect of arch support on joint stiffness and dynamic joint stiffness during a half-marathon run. Twenty-one highly trained male distance runners completed two sessions with identical Advanced Footwear Technology marathon shoes of high or low arch support. Joint angles and moments were calculated during PRE and POST sessions to determine the joint stiffness and dynamic joint stiffness (DJS). A two-way repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to analyze the fatigue (PRE versus POST) and arch support (High versus Low), with a significance level set at 0.05. Stiffne

Cumulative Low-Level Viraemia Is Not Associated with Endothelial Function in Black African Adults With HIV.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV (PWH) experience excess cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk with persistent inflammation considered a key driver, despite antiretroviral therapy (ART). Low-level viraemia (LLV) may contribute to inflammation and vascular injury, but data in sub-Saharan Africa are limited. We assessed correlates of endothelial function among Black African PWH with a history of viraemia despite ART use. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional sub-study within the South African UTRA trial (NCT05333679). Endothelial function was measured with EndoPAT using the natural log-transformed rea

[Postoperative cognitive disorders in traumatic hip surgery in elderly subjects].

The aging population inevitably leads to an increase in the number of surgical procedures performed on older people. The effects of anesthesia coupled with surgery are recognized as precipitating a post-operative cognitive impairment whose etiology seems to be multifactorial with a predominance of the inflammatory cause related to surgery. Objectives. The main objective of our work is to determine the incidence and risk factors of cognitive decline after hip injury surgery. This is the continuation of a publication focusing on the epidemiological and evolutionary profile of the same cohort [1]

Vaccination Status is Not Associated With Adverse Postoperative Outcomes Following Total Joint Arthroplasty in Patients With a Preoperative COVID-19 Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that COVID-19 diagnosis increases rates of perioperative infection, readmission, and other complications following surgery. However, the effect of the COVID vaccine in such patients is unknown. We hypothesized that of the patients with COVID diagnosis, vaccinated patients with COVID-19 diagnosis would have lower rates of adverse complications compared to unvaccinated patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA). METHODS: Using a national database registry, patients aged less than 85 years undergoing elective primary total knee or total hip arthrop

The Orthotic Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation on Reactive Stepping for People With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) often face challenges initiating reactive steps, leading to an increased risk of falls. Reactive balance training (RBT) can improve balance control; however, it is difficult to participate in RBT without the ability to initiate a reactive step independently. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been used to facilitate participation in RBT. FES applied to the common fibular nerve (CFN) following iSCI initiates a flexor withdrawal response, promoting rapid hip and knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion, potentially aiding the

Influence of circumferential ankle pressure of shoe collar on the kinematics, dynamic stability, electromyography, and plantar pressure during normal walking.

BACKGROUND: The shoe's collar plays a significant role in supporting the ankle during walking. Since the protective effect of the collar requires the circular embracing of the ankle and shank, a stiffer collar might be involved with increased circumferential ankle pressure (CAP). It is not clear how collar CAP affects walking performance. Therefore, this study was aimed at examining the influence of the collar CAP on the kinematics, dynamic stability, electromyography (EMG), and plantar pressure during normal walking. METHOD: Sixteen healthy male participants walked on a treadmill while weari

Functional knee phenotypes: A helpful classification tool for visualizing potential femoral varus in restricted kinematic alignment total knee arthroplasty in Japan.

PURPOSE: Restricted kinematic alignment (rKA) is a modified technique of kinematically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA) within a safe alignment range for long-term implant survivorship. The purpose of this study was to clarify (1) the distribution of functional knee phenotypes in patients who underwent TKA in Japan and (2) whether the application of this classification results in anatomically neutral alignment after rKA TKA. METHODS: Overall, 114 TKA surgeries (mechanical alignment [MA]: 49; rKA: 65) were performed. The joint line orientation angle (JLOA), hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA), fem

Fixation of intraoperative proximal femoral fractures during THA using two versus three cerclage wires - a biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative proximal femoral fractures (IPFF) are relevant complications during total hip arthroplasty. Fixation using cerclage wires (CW) represents a minimally-invasive technique to address these fractures through the same surgical approach. The goal of treatment is to mobilise the patient as early as possible, which requires high primary stability. This study aimed to compare different cerclage wire configurations fixing IPFF with regard to biomechanical primary stability. METHODS: Standardised IPFF (type II, Modified Mallory Classification) were created in human fresh froze
