Comparative physiological and transcriptomic analyses of differential mesotrione tolerance in foxtail millet seedlings.

Foxtail millet is an important drought-tolerant crop, yet its production is threatened by weed competition due to limited herbicide options. The 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicide mesotrione shows promise but causes differential responses among varieties. This study investigated the physiological and transcriptomic responses underlying differential mesotrione tolerance in two foxtail millet cultivars, Jingu 21 (JG21, sensitive) and Zhangzagu 10 (ZZG10, tolerant). Physiological analyses revealed that ZZG10 maintained higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn), photosystem

Blood Pressure Reactivity and Urinary Abnormalities in Young Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Urinary abnormalities such as hematuria and proteinuria are occasionally detected in pediatric athletes and are commonly attributed to transient exercise-induced renal stress. However, these findings may also reflect early alterations in cardiovascular regulation, particularly in blood pressure (BP) responses to physical effort. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of urinary abnormalities in young athletes and investigate their association with cardiovascular parameters, with particular focus on hemodynamic response to exercise. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study

Surface-engineered milk-derived extracellular vesicles enable oral miRNA therapy against immunosuppressive pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) shows limited responsiveness to conventional therapies due to an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) characterized by programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1)-mediated immune escape and oncogenic microRNA-21 (miR-21) signaling. Despite the potential of miRNA therapeutics, their clinical translation is hindered by the lack of stable, non-invasive delivery systems capable of bypassing complex biological barriers. Here, we develop a scalable biogenic delivery platform based on surface-engineered milk-derived extracellular vesicles (MEVs) for systemic tr

NSAIDs in the environment: a 2020-2025 review of impacts on plant and algal Physiology.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) belong to the most frequently detected pharmaceutical pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, raising growing concern about their effects on non-target primary producers. Unlike earlier reviews, based mainly on data collected before the year 2020, when environmental exposure levels were substantially lower, this work synthesizes research conducted over the last five years (2020-2025), a period that includes the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The pandemic was associated with a sharp global increase in the consumption of NSAIDs, resulting in their markedly elevated

NRF2 signalling in endometriosis: A hormone-independent axis for fertility-preserving therapeutic innovation.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterised by pain, infertility and recurrence. Current pharmacological management relies largely on hormonal suppression, which can reduce pain and disease activity but does not eradicate ectopic lesions, and symptoms often recur after treatment withdrawal. Adverse effects and incomplete responses further limit long-term use. Because hormonal therapies suppress ovulation and menstruation without improving spontaneous fertility, they are unsuitable for patients seeking pregnancy, underscoring the need for non-hormonal strategies that control l

Plant essential oils against woody plant fungal pathogens: chemical composition, antifungal mechanisms, and translational challenges.

Woody plants are threatened by fungal and oomycete pathogens that cause root and wood rots, cankers, vascular wilts, dieback, fruit decay, and other diseases. Meanwhile, intensive production systems and repeated fungicide use have raised concerns about resistance, environmental persistence, and non-target effects. Essential oils (EOs) have emerged as promising natural antimicrobial resources, yet their effectiveness depends strongly on chemical composition, pathogen susceptibility, concentration, formulation, and application strategy. This review synthesizes current evidence on EO-based manage

Sustained modulation of the inflammatory microenvironment for cartilage repair using an ROS-responsive hydrogel delivering CircSERPINE2-loaded exosomes.

Osteoarthritis (OA) involves chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which impair cartilage regeneration. To counteract these pathological processes, bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cell (BMSC)-derived exosomes have emerged as a promising therapy. These exosomes promote chondrogenesis and facilitate chemokine-guided cell homing. However, hostile microenvironments compromise their efficacy. This study developed a cell-free, ROS-responsive boronate-vinyl (BV) hydrogel platform encapsulating BMSC-derived exosomes overexpressing CircSERPINE2 (BV@cSERPINE2-Exo), which were isolated via u

Mitochondrial-neuroimmune interfaces in post-stroke spasticity: from acute brain injury to chronic motor phenotypes.

Post-stroke spasticity is a common and clinically consequential manifestation of the upper motor neuron syndrome, yet its mechanisms are incompletely explained by stretch reflex hyperexcitability alone. Established models emphasize corticospinal and corticoreticulospinal injury, altered brainstem descending drive, spinal reflex amplification, impaired inhibitory control, and secondary changes in skeletal muscle and connective tissue. In parallel, stroke induces profound mitochondrial stress and neuroimmune activation, including bioenergetic failure, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species produc

Advanced materials for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease comorbidity therapeutics.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) frequently co-occur, driven by inter-organ metabolic crosstalk that current single-target therapies fail to disrupt. This review reframes NAFLD-CVD comorbidity through a materials-first lens and advances a translational design framework that couples pathophysiology with engineering principles. We synthesize three major pathological axes, including lipid overflow and impaired reverse cholesterol transport, inflammation-oxidative stress amplification driven by Kupffer cell-NLRP3 and mitochondrial ROS/MAPK signaling, as we

Differential Reward Circuitry Engagement During Anticipation in Highly Resilient World Trade Center Responders.

BACKGROUND: Capacity to experience positive emotions supports psychological resilience. Reward neural circuitry, implicated in positive emotionality, tends to be dampened in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Less understood is the relationship between neural response to reward and being highly resilient in the face of trauma exposure. METHOD: We recruited World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers (N=94) from three groups: "Highly Resilient" (higher WTC-related trauma exposure plus no current/lifetime psychopathology; n=34), "Lower WTC-exposed" (lower WTC-related trau

Multi-session CBM-I for social anxiety: examining psychopathology, cognitive, neural, and psychophysiological effects in a randomized controlled trial.

Cognitive Bias Modification - Interpretation (CBM-I) aims to alter maladaptive interpretations in social anxiety, yet effects are often small and outcome measures are diverse. Although CBM-I has shown promise, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear and integration with psychophysiological and neural measures has been limited. In this randomized controlled trial, eighty-eight participants with high levels of social anxiety completed two lab sessions, an online training in between, and online follow-up. Participants filled out questionnaires, completed interpretation bias tasks, and underwent

MTHFD2 modulates neural stem cell proliferation and apoptosis after intracerebral hemorrhage by regulating mitochondrial NADPH homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) represents one of the most severe forms of cerebrovascular injury, characterized by high mortality and lasting neurological dysfunction. Neural stem cells (NSCs), which are indispensable for neurogenesis, are mainly distributed in the hippocampus, a brain region essential for learning and memory. However, alterations in hippocampal NSCs following ICH and the mechanisms that mediate these changes remain poorly defined. The present study investigates the effects of ICH on hippocampal NSCs, focusing on the regulatory role of MTHFD2 in maintaining mitocho

Essential Trace Elements and Their Impact on Immune Response and Disease Severity in Malaria Infection: A Systematic Review.

Malaria remains a major global health challenge, profoundly influencing host nutritional and immune status. Essential trace elements such as iron, zinc, copper and magnesium play pivotal roles in immune regulation, antioxidant defence, and pathogen control. However, their alterations during malaria infection and implications for disease outcome have been inconsistently reported. This systematic review aimed to synthesise current evidence on serum and plasma concentrations of key trace elements in malaria-infected individuals and experimental models, and to evaluate their relationship with immu

Gendered socioeconomic impacts of emerging infectious diseases: Insights from a mixed-methods study in Guinea.

This study examines the gendered socioeconomic impacts of infectious disease outbreaks, including both epidemics (e.g., yellow fever, Ebola, Marburg and Mpox) and pandemics (e.g., COVID-19), on populations in Guinea, using data from the Decentralize and Operationalize One Health Platforms (DOPERAUS) project. A mixed-methods approach combined quantitative survey data (N = 906) from participants aged 18 and over and qualitative data from an open-ended questionnaire answered by 508 respondents to capture both measurable outcomes and nuanced experiences. Sampling accounted for gender, age, and vul

Cannabinoids in autoimmune diseases: mechanistic insights and translational challenges.

Cannabinoids are traditionally recognized for their effect on the nervous system. Emerging evidence suggests that cannabinoids mitigate inflammation driven by Th1/Th17 responses, which are linked to autoimmune diseases. In addition to their symptomatic and analgesic effects, cannabinoids suppress the immune response by modulating regulatory T-cell activity and reducing microglial activation, and help to maintain the integrity of the epithelial barrier. These findings suggest that cannabinoids may be involved in immune and metabolic regulatory pathways. Despite the promising preclinical data, t

Regulation of phosphatidylinositol-(4,5)-bisphosphate and active-Rho1p levels and distribution is crucial for correct spatio-temporal cytokinesis and echinocandin responses in Candida albicans.

Candida species cause severe infections like invasive candidiasis, which annually affects 1.5 million people worldwide and causes close to 1 million deaths. Candida albicans is the predominant cause of candidiasis. We previously showed that Eps15-Homology domain-containing protein Irs4p binds 5-phosphatase enzyme Inp51p to regulate plasma membrane levels of phosphatidylinositol-(4,5)-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2) in C. albicans. Indeed, deletion of IRS4 or INP51 led to elevated levels of PI(4,5)P2 and the presence of abnormal intracellular membranous PI(4,5)P2 patches. We demonstrated an interplay

Key Role of the CRE Sequence in the Per1 Promoter in Mediating the Switch Between Unipolar and Bipolar Depression-Like Behaviors.

The cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and Period1 (Per1) have been implicated in depression, but their interactive mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the integrative role of CREB and Per1 in depression and explores a potential strategy for rapid antidepressant treatment. Using a chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) model, we conducted behavioral assessments including the sucrose preference test, forced swimming test, elevated plus maze, and open field test. Gene expression was manipulated via stereotaxic surgery and RNA interference (RNAi), while protein levels and vir

From molecular design to immune remodeling: Advances in perylene diimide-based multimodal cancer therapies.

Perylene diimide (PDI) is a programmable theranostic platform that combines high photostability with facile medicinal-chemistry modification at the imide and bay positions. Recent advances in donor-acceptor tuning, π-conjugation extension/fusion, and aggregation control have pushed its absorption into the near-infrared II (NIR-II) window (1000-1700 nm), and enabled programmable partitioning between photothermal conversion and Type I/II photodynamic pathways under low irradiance. This review primarily surveys PDI derivatives reported from 2015 through 2025. We focus on mechanisms that move beyo
