Exploring the patients' experiences of living with a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

BACKGROUND: The implantable cardioverter defibrillator provides effective treatment for the prevention of sudden cardiac arrest but significant risks associated with transvenous implantation persist. The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator has proven to be an alternative and innovative treatment option for select patients to mitigate these risks. Obtaining the patients' perspectives can provide clinicians with essential information to guide implant selection, procedural decision-making, and support patient management. Conventional implantable cardioverter defibrillator patients

Desmoid fibromatosis through the patients' eyes: time to change the focus and organisation of care?

PURPOSE: Desmoid fibromatosis (DF) is a rare, unpredictable disease with no established, evidence-based treatments. Individual management is based on consensus algorithms. This study aimed to examine the specific health-related quality of life challenges faced by DF patients, current experiences and expectations of care. METHODS: Twenty-seven DF patients were purposively sampled from The Royal Marsden Hospital. Two focus groups and 13 interviews (males 12, females 15; mean age at study 39.5 years) explored health-related quality of life issues and experiences of healthcare. Thematic content w

The clinical course of trauma-related disorders and personality disorders: study protocol of two-year follow-up based on structured interviews.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-related disorders and personality disorders are prevalent in survivors of chronic childhood trauma and neglect. Both conditions have serious consequences for patients, their families, society and public health and a high risk of development of chronicity. However, information on the long term course trajectories is lacking and predictors of course outcome in survivors of chronic childhood traumatization are unknown. The first aim of the current study is to identify two-year course trajectories of pathology in patients with trauma-related disorders and personality disorders.

Concordance between maternal recall of birth complications and data from obstetrical records.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal complications are associated with poor outcomes in the offspring. Access to medical records is limited in the United States and investigators often rely on maternal report of prenatal complications. STUDY DESIGN AND AIMS: We tested concordance between maternal recall and birth records in a community-based sample of mothers participating in a longitudinal study in order to determine the accuracy of maternal recall of perinatal complications. SUBJECTS: Participants were 151 biological mothers, who were interviewed about gestational age at birth, birthweight, and the most c

Four Pathways to Anorexia Nervosa: Patients' Perspective on the Emergence of AN.

INTRODUCTION: Studies show that patients' perception of their illness has a direct influence both on their utilization of health services and their adherence to treatment plans. This may be particularly relevant to the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Previous studies on AN have typically explored single psycho-social factors that patients with AN relate to the emergence of their illness. There is a need for more coherent systematic descriptions of the complexity of the patients' narratives about how their illness emerged. In this study, we sought to identify common components in the partic

Obese parents--obese children? Psychological-psychiatric risk factors of parental behavior and experience for the development of obesity in children aged 0-3: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The incidences of childhood overweight and obesity have increased substantially and with them the prevalence of associated somatic and psychiatric health problems. Therefore, it is important to identify modifiable risk factors for early childhood overweight in order to develop effective prevention or intervention programs. Besides biological factors, familial interactions and parental behavioral patterns may influence children's weight development. Longitudinal investigation of children at overweight risk could help to detect significant risk and protective factors. We aim to descr

The role of negative interpretations of intrusive memories in depression.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have shown that intrusive memories of negative past events, the hallmark symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are also commonly experienced in depression. This study explored whether Ehlers and Steil's [Ehlers, A., Steil, R., 1995. Maintenance of intrusive memories in posttraumatic stress disorder: a cognitive approach. GenAI-mediated immersive dialogue practice in liaison interpreting: a mixed-methods investigation of cognitive-affective outcomes and interactional processes.

INTRODUCTION: Liaison interpreting competence encompasses working memory management, executive control, self-efficacy, and affect regulation, yet its development remains constrained by the linguistic inconsistency and variable cognitive-affective demands of conventional peer role-play. Drawing on an integrated framework, this quasi-experimental mixed-methods study investigates whether Generative AI (GenAI)-mediated immersive dialogue practice can create a more cognitively authentic and affectively facilitative practice environment for interpreter-learners. Biological stress, self-rated stress, anxiety and depression in women with takotsubo syndrome.

AIMS: Takotsubo syndrome is a condition associated with stress, anxiety and depression. Biological stress in takotsubo syndrome is scarcely described in the literature. The aim of this study was to investigate if biological and self-rated stress, anxiety and depression in women with takotsubo syndrome reflect a long-term state of psychological burden, with the hypothesis that saliva cortisol is increased six months after the acute event. METHOD AND RESULT: Forty-seven women were diagnosed with takotsubo syndrome in a diagnostic cross-sectional study, of those 29 had saliva cortisol measured at

Job-search self-efficacy in unemployed individuals with mental health issues: investigating the role of self-stigma with variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

BACKGROUND: Unemployed individuals with mental health issues frequently struggle to find re-employment. The relevance of self-stigma, that is, applying public stigma toward mental health issues to oneself, has been under-researched in this context, but might provide valuable insights into why finding re-employment is particularly challenging for these individuals. Drawing on the “why try” effect of self-stigma and the conservation of resources theory, we examined the associations between self-stigma, job-search self-efficacy, and job-search behavior, also considering the role of social inclusi

An opportunistic qualitative evaluation of the acceptability and feasibility of remote cognitive behavioral group intervention for bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many mental health services had to adapt the way in which their services were delivered. Research exploring the effectiveness of remote therapy and interventions, especially within the bipolar disorder population, is lacking. The pandemic presented an opportunity to conduct an opportunistic evaluation of a group CBT intervention for bipolar disorder which began face-to-face and transitioned to remote delivery. Service users had a unique experience of having experienced both delivery methods during the same intervention. The intervention had n
