Animals exposed to an aerosol of BeSO4 showed a significant reduction in mortality with iron treatment. Rats were exposed for 2 h in a nose-only inhalation chamber for 14 days to an aerosol of 2.59 micrograms/Be/l. The cumulative mortality of animals concurrently treated with iron salt was significantly reduced (P less than 0.05) compared to animals which had not received iron treatment.

Increased susceptibility to Rhizopus oryzae in diabetes was investigated using mice in which diabetic ketoacidosis was experimentally induced. All of the diabetic mice which had developed ketoacidosis died within four days after inoculation of R. oryzae and their serum UIBCs (Unbound iron binding capacity) were significantly lower than those of the normal control mice. This study suggested that the decreased serum UIBC produced by diabetic ketoacidosis enhances the growth of R. oryzae in vivo.

The iron status of 103 male patients aged 19 to 48 years with chronic S. mansoni infection was evaluated before treatment. Fasting blood samples were analyzed for serum ferritin and iron, percent transferrin saturation, hemoglobin and other hematological indices. The aim of the presented study was to establish if occupational exposure to infrared (IR) radiation increases the risk of developing cataract, and to correlate the lens findings to the degree of exposure. The eyes of 208 IR-exposed workers and 208 controls, all from 6 Swedish iron and steel manufacturing plants, were examined. Liver and spleen iron concentrations, serum ferritin level and binding of S-ferritin to concanavalin A (Con A) were measured in 12 patients with thalassaemia major or intermedia at the time of splenectomy. All these subjects had increased liver iron concentration, most of them had hepatic fibrosis but none of them had histological evidence of chronic hepatitis. No patient had ascorbic acid deficiency. A total of 21 patients with thalassaemia major between 2 and 20-years-old were on a "hypertransfusion" regimen for 1 to 14 year periods. The use of the transfusion quotient (TQ) allowed a precise survey of the blood requirement. Serum ferritin estimation was compared with bone marrow hemosiderin staining in the primary diagnosis of iron deficiency and overload in 19 patients on chronic hemodialysis. The occurrence of a hepatocellular adenoma is described in a young woman with beta-thalassemia and secondary iron overload. This patient had no history of oral contraceptive use, and in fact was hypogonadal as a result of iron deposition in pituitary and gonadal tissue. Although hepatocellular carcinoma frequently occurs in diseases associated with iron overload, this is the first report of a benign liver tumor associated with secondary iron overload.

The effect of riboflavin administration on iron metabolism was studied in a group of riboflavin-deficient children with Erythrocyte Glutathione Reductase (EC 1.6.4.2) reactivation above 1.20. Serum ferritin has been shown to be an excellent determinant of iron stores. In a consecutive group of women registering at the regular prenatal clinic, we measured serum ferritin, iron, iron-binding capacity, and hemoglobin to determine their hematologic status as to anemia. It was found that serum ferritin is the most sensitive determinant of depleted iron stores, with serum iron being next in sensitivity. This assay is a rapid, economic, sensitive measure of iron stores, and results are not altered significantly by other types of anemia or oral iron therapy.

In order to study oxidation states in the surface analysis of solids, a semi-quantitative ESCA (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy-XPS and X-ray-excited Auger-electron spectroscopy-XAES) method was proposed. Taking iron-oxygen compounds as examples, the summation or subtraction technique was utilized in the analysis of ESCA spectra to identify the co-ordination type and crystal structure. The "XAES intensity factors" for the lines Cr L(3)M(2,3)M(4,5), Ti L(3)M(2,3)M(4,5) and from Fe L(3)M(4,5)M(4,5) to Zn L(3)M(4,5)M(4,5) were estimated and their occurrence discussed.
