[Alcohol and drugs and their relation to criminal recidivism].

This report assesses the influence of alcohol- and drug- induced disorders on criminal recidivism. A sample of 185 delinquents was examined for their criminal responsibility in the department of forensic psychiatry in the years 1992 and 1993. Official criminal records were obtained in December 2001. 27.3 % of the delinquents with alcohol abuse, 47.3 % with drug abuse and 47.2 % with a family history of alcohol abuse recidivated with a crime. 50 % of the individuals with an own alcohol- and drug abuse together with a family history of alcohol abuse recidivated. 62.5 % of offenders with both, ow

Commentary: a patient-centered theory of satisfaction.

The Primary Provider Theory holds that patient satisfaction occurs at the nexus of provider power and patient expectations. More specifically, patient satisfaction is principally the function of an underlying network of interrelated satisfaction constructs--satisfaction with the primary provider, waiting for the provider, and satisfaction with the provider's assistant(s). Hierarchically linked to patient-centered expectations of provider value, the Theory specifies that primary providers offer the greatest clinical utility to patients. The Theory is operationalized by patient-centered measures

Genesis and evolution of behavioral disorders: from infancy to early adult life.

The New York Longitudinal Study has followed the behavioral development of 133 subjects from early infancy to early adult life. Special attention has been given to the systematic clinical evaluation and follow-up of all subjects presenting any evidence of behavior disorder. The authors present incidence and outcome data, define the concept of temperament, and briefly discuss conceptual issues and empirical findings. They found the "goodness of fit" (consonance between the individual and the environment) concept useful in tracing developmental sequences. The authors summarize quantitative analy

Prevalence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and associations with psychological distress and quality of life among medical students in Egypt: a multicentre cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterised by obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions. These obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) are subclinical manifestations that do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for OCD and are associated with anxiety, depression and lower quality of life (QoL). Medical students are vulnerable to developing OCS due to stress in medical school. This study assessed OCS prevalence and its association with the mental well-being and QoL of medical students in Egypt. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted across 15 Egyptian medi

Rats bred for helplessness exhibit positive reinforcement learning deficits which are not alleviated by an antidepressant dose of the MAO-B inhibitor deprenyl.

Principles of negative reinforcement learning may play a critical role in the etiology and treatment of depression. We examined the integrity of positive reinforcement learning in congenitally helpless (cH) rats, an animal model of depression, using a random ratio schedule and a devaluation-extinction procedure. Furthermore, we tested whether an antidepressant dose of the monoamine oxidase (MAO)-B inhibitor deprenyl would reverse any deficits in positive reinforcement learning. We found that cH rats (n=9) were impaired in the acquisition of even simple operant contingencies, such as a fixed in

Characterization of cognitive deficits in mice with an alternating hemiplegia-linked mutation.

Cognitive impairment is a prominent feature in a range of different movement disorders. Children with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood are prone to developmental delay, with deficits in cognitive functioning becoming progressively more evident as they grow older. Heterozygous mutations of the ATP1A3 gene, encoding the Na+,K+-ATPase α3 subunit, have been identified as the primary cause of Alternating Hemiplegia. Heterozygous Myshkin mice have an amino acid change (I810N) in Na+,K+-ATPase α3 that is also found in Alternating Hemiplegia. To investigate whether Myshkin mice exhibit learning and

Prepubertal chronic stress and ketamine administration to rats as a neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia symptomatology.

Increased vulnerability to psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, has been associated with higher levels of stress. In the early development of the central nervous system, changes in function of glutamatergic N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors can possibly result in the development of psychosis, cognitive impairment and emotional dysfunction in adulthood. Thus, in this study we examined the behavioural consequences of the exposure of male rats to chronic stress (postnatal days 30-60) and ketamine administration (postnatal days 41-45); both during a sensitive developmental time window

Predicting return of fear following exposure therapy with an implicit measure of attitudes.

We sought to advance understanding of the processes underlying the efficacy of exposure therapy and particularly the phenomenon of return of fear (ROF) following treatment by drawing on a social psychological view of phobias as attitudes. Specifically, a dual process theory of attitude-related behavior predicts that a positive response to exposure therapy may reflect change in either the automatic (the attitude representation itself) or controlled (skills and confidence at coping with the fear) responses to the phobic stimulus, or both. However, if the attitude representation remains negative

A detailed analysis of the early context extinction deficits seen in APPswe/PS1dE9 female mice and their relevance to preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an incurable age-related neurodegenerative condition, characterised by progressive decline in cognitive and physical functions, and extensive brain damage. Identifying cognitive deficits that accompany early AD is critical, as the accompanying synaptic changes can be effectively targeted by current treatments - at present AD is typically not diagnosed until brain pathology is established, and treatment relatively ineffective. We therefore examined early cognitive changes in 4-month-old mice over-expressing 2 genes responsible for AD (APPswe/PS1d9 mouse line). Experi

The comorbidity of conduct problems and depression in childhood and adolescence.

An extensive body of research documents the high prevalence of comorbidity among child and adolescent disorders in general and between conduct problems and depression in particular. These problems co-occur at significantly higher rates than would be expected by chance and their comorbidity may have significant implications for nosology, treatment, and prognosis. Four main hypotheses have been put forth to account for these high rates of comorbidity. First, comorbidity may be a result of shortcomings associated with referral or informant biases. Second, comorbidity may be an artifact of overlap

Constructing a prospective model of psychosocial adaptation in young adolescents with spina bifida: an application of optimal data analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how individual- and family-level predictors in late childhood and preadolescence relate to psychosocial adaptation (i.e., scholastic success, social acceptance, and positive self-worth) in early adolescence. METHOD: This prospective longitudinal study includes 68 families of children with spina bifida and 68 comparison families of healthy children. Multimethod, multiinformant data were evaluated via optimal data analysis (ODA) and classification tree analysis (CTA) techniques. RESULTS: Factors best predicting psychosocial adaptation in early adolescence included (a) int

Stress and coping in rural women with alcohol and other drug disorders.

Alcohol and other drug disorders (AOD) are a growing problem among women with estimates as high as 11 million U.S. women affected. This is a report of the results of two studies investigating risk factors for AOD disorders in rural women, a population that is difficult to access. Samples of the two studies were combined for a total of 267 women. Analyses focus on stress, coping, alcohol expectancies, and self-esteem. Results indicate that rural women with AOD disorders experience more stressors and fewer uplifting events, have fewer coping resources, and use more emotion-focused coping strateg

The mediating role of organizational justice in the relationship between cost consciousness and resource efficiency among human service professionals.

BACKGROUND: Organizational psychology research suggests that employees' perceptions of workplace practices play an important role in shaping organizational outcomes. In resource-constrained Human Service Organizations (HSOs), organizational justice may represent a key psychological mechanism linking cost-conscious practices to resource-efficient behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether organizational justice explains the association between cost consciousness and resource efficiency among professionals working in Human Service Organizations (HSOs). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey

Relationships between physical activity, general self-efficacy, sport motivation and physical self-concept among primary school students.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is fundamental to children's physical and psychological development, yet the psychological correlates of the association between physical activity and physical self-concept remain incompletely understood. This study examined associations among self-reported physical activity, general self-efficacy, positive sport-participation motivation, and physical self-concept in Chinese primary school students and tested a theory-informed serial indirect model of cross-sectional associations. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 782 students in Dunhua, Jil

Sustainable workforce development: Examining work engagement through the Lens of green human capital and psychological ownership.

Background Organizations increasingly invest in Green Human Capital (GHC) to develop sustainability-oriented capabilities, yet evidence on how it enhances employee Work Engagement (WE) remains limited. Psychological Ownership (PO) rooted in motivation and responsibility research, may explain this relationship, but its mediating role in sustainability contexts remains underexplored.ObjectiveThis study examines the direct relationship between GHC and WE and the mediating role of PO, while also analyzing these relationships across four WE dimensions: Vigor, Dedication, Absorption, and Sustainable

From destination perceptions to visit behavior in Macao: a sequential mediation model of motivation, attitude, and intention among Mainland Chinese tourists.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines how mainland Chinese tourists' destination-related perceptions are translated into self-reported visit behavior in Macao through a sequential psychological process. Drawing on destination image theory, perceived value theory, push-pull theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior, the study develops a sequential mediation model linking perceived destination image, electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM), perceived destination value, visit motivation, visit attitude, visit intention, and visit behavior. METHODS: A quantitative survey was conducted among mainland Chinese
