A 27-year-old man with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS, Gorlin syndrome) who had undergone craniospinal irradiation for a childhood brain stem medulloblastoma complained of progressive binocular visual loss. Ophthalmologic examination disclosed subnormal visual acuity and visual fields in both eyes attributed to chronic papilledema. Brain MRI demonstrated mass effect from multiple large meningiomas. After embolization and surgical resection of the largest meningioma, papilledema disappeared and visual dysfunction resolved partially. This is the sixth reported patient with NBCCS, me

We present a case of synchronous bilateral carotid body tumor and vagal paraganglioma in a 49-year-old man who presented with 3 months history of tenderness and palpable neck masses bilaterally. An encapsulated mass which was thought to be a carotid body tumor and an incidental 3 cm x 2 cm, 5 cm x 1 cm, 5 cm mass which seemed to be originated from vagus nerve were dissected from the left side. Pathology revealed carotid body tumor and vagal paraganglioma. Six months after the first operation, the carotid body tumor on the right side was totally excised. A discussion of this case is followed by

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma of the choroid is the most common ocular primary malignancy, but is still a rare tumour. The occurrence of bilateral uveal melanoma is exceedingly rare. The probability of any one individual developing bilateral melanoma is estimated to be 1 to 50 million.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective search of the photo database of patients between 1970 and 2006 with uveal melanoma was performed.
RESULTS: Four patients with bilateral melanoma were identified. The case reports of the two females and two males are presented.
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, bilateral primary

BACKGROUND: Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are a distinct subgroup of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas with preferable localization in the gastrointestinal tract. PATIENTS AND METHODS We describe the unusual case of a 48-year-old female patient, who was diagnosed with simultaneous MALT lymphoma of both breasts. Cervical, axillary and retroperitoneal lymph nodes were slightly enlarged, indicating an infiltration by the lymphoma. In her medical history the patient suffered from Hashimoto's thyroiditis. After 6 cycles of chemotherapy with CHOP regimen, the patient achieved complete rem

Concordant or composite mycosis fungoides and B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is exceedingly rare, with only 10 cases previously described to our knowledge. We report a case of a 64-year-old woman who developed generalized erythroderma 5 years after the diagnosis of early stage B-CLL. Over the next 6 years of her clinical course multiple sequential samples of skin, peripheral blood, and one enlarged lymph node were studied in detail by flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and electron microscopy. The progressive cutaneous infiltrates were initially character

BACKGROUND: Recently, it has been proposed that human papilloma virus (HPV) infection may play a role in the carcinogenesis of bladder urothelial malignancy. However, there is still controversy about the prevalence of HPV in such malignancies. With similar techniques of in situ hybridization (ISH) or polymerase chain reaction (PCR), either high or rare frequency have been detected. To evaluate the prevalence of HPV in the urothelial malignancies based on presentations here, 118 cases of urothelial malignancies were analysed, including those of the renal pelvis and ureter which have rarely been

A 65-year-old man was evaluated for pancytopenia in March 1979, and found to have hairy cell leukemia (HCL). Treatment with splenectomy and subsequently interferon produced temporary remissions. In July 1985, the patient began intravenous deoxycoformycin (DCF) therapy, and after 1 year complete peripheral blood and bone marrow remission was achieved. Fourteen months after cessation of therapy, the patient developed a skin rash and was found to have cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and Sezary syndrome. Morphologic study of the hairy cells (HC) in the peripheral blood at presentation and the Sezary cel

An increased incidence of different malignancies associated to chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has been reported. The association of CLL and acute leukemia is a rare event described in < 1% of CLL, the type of acute leukemia being either from the lymphoid or more often from the myeloid lineage. The coexistence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and CLL in the same patient has been occasionally reported. Most of these cases have been associated with the administration of chemotherapy or radiotherapy for CLL, suggesting that the former may be a secondary leukemia. On the other hand, CLL could pr

BACKGROUND: For primary organ preservation, concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is performed for advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). In this organ-preservation setting with CCRT, surgery is reserved as a salvage treatment in cases of locoregional failure after CCRT. The purpose of the study was to review our experience with salvage surgery after CCRT for patients with SCCHN and to evaluate the effectiveness and prognostic factors affecting survival.
METHODS: The records of patients with stage II-IVB SCC of the larynx, oropharynx, or hypopharynx treated with salvage

BACKGROUND: There are few epidemiological data available on rare skin cancer, including Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), which is a multifocal illness affecting the skin, mucosa, and viscera. Four different types of KS have been described: classic, AIDS-associated, iatrogenic, and African. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology and evolution of the different types of KS in the Doubs region of France.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective population-based study was conducted, including 57 patients with KS from the Doubs region between 1977 and 2009. These patients were identified by

BACKGROUND: "Collision" tumours consist of different neoplasms coexisting within a single lesion. Whilst quite common in the skin, the gastrointestional tract, and the ovaries, intraocular collision tumours are exceedingly rare. We describe an exceptional case of a combined uveal melanoma and intraocular plasmacytoma.
METHODS: Observational case report. A 61-year-old woman underwent enucleation for rubeotic glaucoma and cells in the anterior chamber after proton-beam radiotherapy of a cilio-choroidal melanoma of the right eye. Examination of the enucleated eye was performed with immunohistoch

A 65-year-old male patient initially presented with a penile tumour, identified as myeloid sarcoma. Subsequent bone marrow investigation revealed the presence of a synchronous plasma cell myeloma, without any evidence of a bone marrow-based myeloproliferative disorder. Although the course of both neoplasms was progressive, with increasing bone marrow involvement by the plasma cell myeloma and cutaneous dissemination of the myeloid sarcoma, both neoplasms remained confined to their original tissue compartments. Different biology of both tumours, including markedly divergent response to therapie

Carriers of BRCA2 germline mutation have a significantly increased lifetime risk of breast and ovarian cancer compared to non carriers. Several other carcinomas seem to be associated with BRCA2 mutations: pancreas, prostate, larynx, gallbladder, bile duct cancer, and malignant melanoma. We described a case of a 67-year-old BRCA2 mutation carrier of Caucasian, non-Jewish, ethnic origin who successively developed 4 primary malignancies in 30 months: breast ductal carcinoma, chronic lymphatic leukemia, ovarian serous papillary carcinoma, and endocervical adenocarcinoma. This is the first case of

The authors report the unusual case of a 35-year-old woman suffering from left leg numbness and radiculopathy due to multiple lesions in the central nervous system: one right parietal extracranial-intracranial lesion with invasion of the sensory cortex, and two intraspinal, intradural lesions compressing the spinal cord at T3-5 and S 1-4. Biopsy sampling of the extracranial part of the parietal lesion led to a diagnosis of myeloid sarcoma. Further examination revealed no evidence of leukemic disease or myeloproliferative disorder. An aggressive multimodal approach to treatment in this patient

The aim of this study is to evaluate the additional clinical information provided by whole body positron emission tomography (PET) with fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) for initial staging of patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity. PET scans from the head to the pelvic floor of 34 consecutive patients (22 male, 12 female; mean age 71 years) with histologically confirmed SCC of the oral cavity were retrospectively evaluated. Clinical information including CT of the head and neck and chest X-Ray or chest CT was compared with information on nodal involvement and distant metastases

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive primary cutaneous neuroendocrine cancer which almost always exhibits the cytokeratin (CK)20+/thyroid transcription factor (TTF)-1- immunophenotype. MCC may occur concurrently with squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen disease, and/or basal cell carcinoma (BCC), with some evidence that MCCs which occur in conjunction with other neoplasms exhibit different immunophenotypes compared to pure MCC cases. We present a case of CK20-/TTF-1+ MCC concurrent with Bowen disease and BCC, and discuss possible differences in the pathogenesis of pure vs combined MCC.
