CNN for a Regression Machine Learning Algorithm for Predicting Cognitive Impairment Using qEEG.

PURPOSE: Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals give detailed information on the electrical brain activities occurring in the cerebral cortex. They are used to study brain-related disorders such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Brain signals obtained using an EEG machine can be a neurophysiological biomarker for early diagnosis of dementia through quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis. This paper proposes a machine learning methodology to detect MCI and AD from qEEG time-frequency (TF) images of the subjects in an eyes-closed resting state (ECR). PARTICIPANTS AND METHOD

A soft grasper with bioinspired morphology and synthetic nervous system control reduces damage to deformable objects and fruits during handling.

The design of robotic graspers that can safely interact with deformable, damage-prone materials such as fruits, vegetables, and biological tissues remains an ongoing challenge in robotics. Conventional robotic graspers made of mostly rigid materials have limited compliance and tactile sensing, reducing their applicability to contact-rich manipulation of soft objects. In contrast, humans and animals can interact with their environments safely and intelligently through their bodies' structural properties and nervous systems' computational capabilities. In this article, we present the design and

Improved Skills for Predicting Sub-Seasonal to Seasonal Global Sea Surface Temperature.

Accurate prediction of global sea surface temperature at sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) timescales is critical for drought and flood forecasting, as well as for improving disaster preparedness in human society. Operational physics-based numerical models are run to predict S2S sea surface temperature and corresponding climate indices, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation. However, these models are hampered by computational inefficiencies, rapidly dissipating ocean-atmosphere initial conditions, and significant uncertainty and biases. Here, we introduce a novel spatiotemporal deep learning neura

Characterization of Turbulent Kinetic Energy and Shear Layers in Sudden Expansion Flows: A Physics-Informed Machine Learning Approach.

PURPOSE: Traditional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods used in the hydrodynamic design of blood-contacting medical devices create a bottleneck in optimization processes due to their heavy dependence on mesh structure and high computational costs. METHODS: In this study, using a mesh-free Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) approach, complex flow fields and Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) distributions in FDA reference nozzle geometries were mapped with high resolution. Unlike artificial intelligence algorithms that merely fit data, the proposed model directly integrates the axisymm

Context-aware diffusion models for solving partial differential equations.

Solving partial differential equations (PDEs) enables computers to simulate and understand continuously evolving physical processes in nature, forming a critical foundation that bridges physical laws and intelligent computation. Recently, deep learning has emerged as a research hotspot for solving PDEs due to its powerful nonlinear representation capacity and efficient approximation capabilities. However, it still faces challenges such as poor generalization and unsatisfactory solution accuracy. To this end, this paper proposes a context-aware diffusion model-driven framework for solving diffe

C─H Arylation-Derived Organic Conjugated Molecules for Optoelectronic Synaptic Transistors.

Photonic organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) mimicking biological neurons hold great promise for neuromorphic computing. However, current organic optoelectronic materials still suffer from limited functionality and the low atom economy of conventional synthesis methods (such as Suzuki and Stille couplings). Herein, two isomeric organic conjugated molecules, p-Ph2FTT and o-Ph2FTT, employing noncovalent conformational locks with excellent planarity are first developed via an eco-friendly, tin-free direct C─H activation strategy. Due to the different fluorine substitution positions on the be

Lightweight deep training network for lymph nodes segmentation from head and neck CT images.

BACKGROUND: Accurate lymph node (LN) segmentation is highly beneficial for diagnosing and treating head and neck diseases. However, because of the varying sizes and complex shapes of LNs from the head and neck, as well as their blurred boundaries with surrounding tissues in computed tomography (CT) images, it is difficult for physicians to manually identify the region of interest (ROI). Although existing 3D-volumetric-convolution-based methods play an important role in LN boundary extraction, they suffer from high computational complexity. PURPOSE: To tackle these issues, we develop an effici

Deep-Learning-Assisted Digital Fluorescence Immunoassay on Magnetic Beads for Ultrasensitive Determination of Protein Biomarkers.

Digital fluorescence immunoassay (DFI) based on random dispersion magnetic beads (MBs) is one of the powerful methods for ultrasensitive determination of protein biomarkers. However, in the DFI, improving the limit of detection (LOD) is challenging since the ratio of signal-to-background and the speed of manual counting beads are low. Herein, we developed a deep-learning network (ATTBeadNet) by utilizing a new hybrid attention mechanism within a UNet3+ framework for accurately and fast counting the MBs and proposed a DFI using CdS quantum dots (QDs) with narrow peak and optical stability as re

Dual-Grained Lightweight Strategy.

Removing redundant parameters and computations before the model training has attracted a great interest as it can effectively reduce the storage space of the model, speed up the training and inference of the model, and save energy consumption during the running of the model. In addition, the simplification of deep neural network models can enable high-performance network models to be deployed to resource-constrained edge devices, thus promoting the development of the intelligent world. However, current pruning at initialization methods exhibit poor performance at extreme sparsity. In order to

Revealing spatiotemporal NOx emission dynamics in the Yangtze River Delta using physics-informed neural networks and TROPOMI observations.

Accurate estimation of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions is essential for characterizing their impacts on atmospheric environment and supporting air pollution management. This study introduces an innovative inversion framework based on a Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN), designed to derive NOx emissions from TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite observations. By embedding the physical laws governing atmospheric processes, this method effectively bridges traditional data assimilation techniques with the computational efficiency of deep learning. Negative Quantum Capacitance-Driven Photonic Synapse with Ultralow Energy Consumption and Year-Scale Retention.

Emerging neuromorphic systems demand devices that seamlessly integrate sensing, memory, and computing in a single element to overcome the energy and latency constraints inherent to conventional architectures. Here, we introduce a two-dimensional van der Waals photonic synapse (MoS2/h-BN/WTe2/h-BN) with the Weyl semimetal (WTe2) employed as the floating gate. As the Fermi level is set near the Weyl nodes by a minute charge tunneling, the enhanced electron-electron correlation triggers the negative carrier compressibility and finally results in the negative quantum capacitance effect. This quant

Characterization of RGB-Polarization Sensor-Based Cameras.

This work presents a characterization method for cameras with trichromatic RGB color filter array and polarization layer (RGB-P) sensor-based imaging devices. Such sensors enable the reconstruction of color and polarization of registered scene elements, which is an important requirement in computer vision. We will present spectral responsivity measurements, which reveal different sensitivities for various color and polarization channels. Furthermore, we will discuss and model an observed chromaticity shift in registered camera signals for polarized irradiance. Both lead to inaccurate estimatio

Polaritonic machine learning for graph-based data analysis.

Photonic and polaritonic systems offer a fast and efficient platform for accelerating machine learning (ML) through physics-based computing. To gain a computational advantage, however, polaritonic systems must meet the following: (1) exploit features that specifically favor nonlinear optical processing; (2) address problems that are computationally hard and depend on these features; and (3) integrate photonic processing within broader ML pipelines. In this work, we propose a polaritonic machine learning approach for solving graph-based data problems. We demonstrate how lattices of condensates

Cerebellar contributions to fear-based emotional processing: relevance to understanding the neural circuits involved in autism.

Cerebellar networks have traditionally been linked to sensorimotor control. However, a large body of evidence suggests that cerebellar functions extend to non-motor realms, such as fear-based emotional processing and that these functions are supported by interactions with a wide range of brain structures. Research related to the cerebellar contributions to emotional processing has focussed primarily on the use of well-constrained conditioning paradigms in both human and non-human subjects. From these studies, cerebellar circuits appear to be critically involved in both conditioned and uncondit
