PURPOSE: HIV positive children underwent ophthalmologic examination to evaluate prospectively the incidence, and type of ocular involvement in pediatric AIDS.
METHOD: Two ophthalmologists examined the children during their pediatric examination, for two years. When possible, a retinography was performed.

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical profile and kindreds of patients with familial uveal melanoma (FUM).
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Medical charts of 4500 patients with uveal melanoma were reviewed for family history of uveal melanoma. The clinical profile of these patients and their kindreds were studied to determine the incidence of FUM and pattern of inheritance. The association of FUM to cutaneous melanoma, familial atypical mole and melanoma syndrome, and other nonmelanocytic cancers was analyzed using statistical methods.

This is an epidemiological review on cancer of the oesophagus. In this attempt, all aspects of epidemiological factors based on national and international studies on oesophageal cancer have been brought out. The problem of this cancer in Indian context has been documented. The association of tobacco and alcohol habits with oesophageal cancer has been confirmed from the studies conducted in India. There is an urgent need to educate the common people about the harmful effect of these two habits and governments and voluntary organisation should take effective steps for its prevention.

Fifty one patients 12-19 years old were operated on because of different thyroid diseases (1.7% of total amount 3029 patients after surgical treatment). There was no post-operative complication (except of 2 cases of temporary vocal cord paresis). Late results of surgical treatment in adolescents were not significantly different then in other groups. UNLABELLED: It has been assumed that the stereotyped hand movements in Rett syndrome are symmetrical, midline and that they prevent purposeful use of the hands. Their relationship with respiration has not been previously explored.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five girls whose Rett syndrome included disorganised breathing were selected. Their parents were contacted and interviewed by telephone at their convenience. None refused.

The offspring of nine women who had abused alcohol and drugs during pregnancy were studied. Of the 30 children, 10 had fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Ophthalmological impairments associated with FAS--impaired vision, optic nerve hypoplasia, cataract, increased tortuosity of retinal vessels--were common. The severity of teratogenic lesions varied among the children and was often related to the level of abuse during pregnancy. Most women were unable to take care of their children during periods of substance abuse. All children with FAS/FAE had learning difficulties.

To evaluate the variations within and between observers in the interpretation of important histological prognostic factors, a series of 96 melanoma patients was randomly selected from a database of 1691 patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma. Propofol, an intravenous general anaesthetic, has been reported to relieve some forms of pruritus at subhypnotic doses. We assessed its effectiveness in 32 patients with several kinds of non-malignant chronic pain, in a placebo-controlled, double-blind study. We found that central pain, but not neuropathic pain, is at least partially controlled by propofol at subhypnotic doses, without major side-effects. We conducted a follow-up study on 15 patients with Wiedemann-Beckwith syndrome (WBS) to further clarify major and minor diagnostic clinical characteristics and longterm expectations for growth and development. We found patients with WBS tended to have polyhydramnios with large placentas which were almost twice normal placental weight.
