PURPOSE: To describe the visual phenotype of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Afro-Caribbean population living in Martinique (French West Indies) and to specify the influence of the migration to metropolitan France on ocular impairment. DESIGN: Prospective consecutive observational case series. METHODS: A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 112 patients of Afro-Caribbean origin with MS satisfying McDonald's diagnostic criteria, divided into 53 cases (47.3%), the non-migrant patients (group NM), who had never left the Caribbean basin, and 59 cases (52.7%

[Possibilities of special correction in restoration of reading capacity in poorly sighted patients].

A total of 1012 patients aged 6-94 years (31.9% aged under 19 years, 25.2% aged 20-60 years, and 42.9% aged over 60) with poor sight, 83% of whom could not read book type, were examined. Corrected far visual acuity was 0.03-0.35, in 52.7% of these 0.1-0.2 and in 38.2% less than 0.1. The most incident diseases were retinal and optic nerve disease (40.6%), complicated myopia (15%), congenital ocular diseases (17.3%), aphakia (9.8%), and glaucoma (7.9%). In order to select correction, near visual acuity, reading acuity, and reading speed were evaluated. Optic magnifiers, such as hyperocular eyegl

[SMON and pharmacokinetics of chinoform with special reference to animal species difference].

The experimental reproduction of SMON using several kinds of animals given a prolonged administration of chinoform has been carried out by many investigators because of the importance to solve the problem of etiology in the SMON. In these experiments, it is demonstrated that a marked species difference was observed in the relationship between the doses given to animals and the frequency of the onset of neurologic symptoms. Although dogs were accepted as the most suitable animal model for SMON, pathological changes in the peripheral nerve of the dog were not observed. The blood level or tissue

Diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis. Report of transvitreal surgical removal of a subretinal nematode.

BACKGROUND: The precise identification of nematodes which cause diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis (DUSN) has been unsuccessful. Shape and size are useful in the initial stages of identification, but histopathologic examination usually is necessary for accurate classification. Intact nematodes recovered from patients with DUSN have been mentioned scarcely in the literature. The authors report the first case of DUSN in which a viable nematode was removed successfully via a transvitreal surgical approach and recovered for parasitologic study. METHODS: Bimanual pars plana vitrectomy was

[CMV retinitis in AIDS--a pre-final complication?].

The appearance of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in AIDS is regarded as an unfavourable sign, it was even considered in the first years of the HIV-epidemic to be a pre-final complication. The survival period after diagnosis of the retinitis is under virostatic therapy generally given as several months, only exceptionally as more than a year. We report here 3 cases of CMV retinitis in AIDS having an unusually long duration of 14-24 months. The clinical and histological results with the pecularities (resistance to therapy, optic atrophy, retinal atrophy with detachment, atypical peripheral fund

[Surgical orbital decompression in Basedowian optic neuropathy. Apropos of 5 cases].

Surgical orbital decompression in 5 patients with basedowian optic neuropathy restored the visual acuity and visual field in all cases. The place of surgery among the different therapeutic options proposed for this serious complication of Basedow's disease is discussed, as well as the advantages over other decompression techniques of the procedure used : the cutaneous approach to a trans-ethmoidonasal decompression.

Cluster headache-like headache, Hageman trait deficiency, retrobulbar neuritis, and giant aneurysm. Autonomic function studies.

A 56-year-old, previously reported woman with cluster headache-like headache with bouts of unilateral (the side of predominance changing through the years) severe headache had a familial history (three generations) of partial Hageman factor deficiency and bleeding episodes. A giant aneurysm was found to be lodged in the anterior communicating artery on the left side. Clinically, the features were atypical for cluster headache: onset at a young age (14 years), episodes of retrobulbar neuritis appearing at the side of pain, etc. Studies of forehead sweating indicated that the right side was the
