Extending single-session interventions to target parents as agents of change in adolescent eating disorders.

Schleider et al. (2023, International Journal of Eating Disorders, current issue) propose multiple applications of single-session intervention (SSI) models to the eating disorders (EDs) intervention spectrum. In this commentary, we propose extending the potential of SSIs to target parents as agents of change for youth with restrictive EDs, particularly anorexia nervosa (AN). Directing SSIs to parents of children with AN can circumvent psychological barriers to care while capitalizing on the unique level of motivation in a parent to protect a child and advance their capacity to thrive. Association between parental separation, childhood trauma, neuroticism, and depression: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Parental separation has been suggested to be associated with depression development in offspring. The new family constellation subsequent to separation could be associated with elevated scores of childhood trauma, shaping more emotionally instable personalities. This could ultimately be a risk factor for mood disorders and particularly the development of depression in life. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we investigated the associations between parental separation, childhood trauma (CTQ) and personality (NEO-FFI) in a sample of N = 119 patients diagnosed with depression and N =

Comparison of parental and practitioner's acceptance for dental treatment under general anaesthesia in paediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Practitioner's knowledge and parental perspectives on dental general anaesthesia (GA) have been surveyed separately in the past. But in daily routine both need to collaborate for the benefit of the child. The aim of this paper was to compare parental and practitioner's acceptance of GA with special focus on identifying factors which influence their differences in decision making. METHODS: Questionnaires were conducted among 142 participants in a specialized paediatric dental clinic in Germany from February 2020 to February 2021. 51 German practitioners from private practices and c

Higher parental education was associated with good cognitive outcomes in infants with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.

AIM: Predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains imprecise, despite advanced imaging and neurophysiological tests. We explored the predictive value of socio-economic status (SES). METHODS: The cohort comprised 93 infants (59% male) with HIE, who had received therapeutic hypothermia. Patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging, and brain injuries were quantified using the Barkovich scoring system. Family SES was self-reported using a questionnaire. Adverse outcomes were defined as mild to severely delayed development with a score of ≤85 in any dom

The relation between clinically diagnosed and parent-reported feeding difficulties in children with and without clefts.

A cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is one of the most common craniofacial malformations, occurring worldwide in about one in 600-1000 newborn infants. CL/P is known to influence the feeding process negatively, causing feeding difficulties in 25-73% of all children with CL/P. Because there is a risk for serious complications in these children regarding feeding difficulties, there is often a need for intensive medical counseling and treatment. At this moment, adequate diagnosis and measurement remain a challenge and often lead to a delayed referral for professional help. Since parents play a big p

Prenatal diagnosis of cleft lip and/or palate: What do we tell prospective parents?

Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/CP) is the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly and parents often ask, "how did this happen?" Patients and families may benefit from access to a multidisciplinary team (MDT) from prenatal diagnosis into early adulthood. Multiple factors can contribute to the development of a cleft. We discuss the epidemiology and risk factors that increase the likelihood of having a newborn with a cleft. The purpose of this article is to review the prenatal investigations involved in the diagnosis and workup of these patients in addition to postpartum treatment, prognostic fa

The comparison of expressed emotion of parents of individuals with fragile X syndrome to other intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Parenting children and young adults with intellectual disabilities, including individuals with fragile X syndrome and Down syndrome, is challenging, joyful, and complicated. Exploring how parents talk about their children, and the quality of the parent/child relationship can provide insight into the home environment and interactional patterns of the family. METHOD: Expressed emotion (EE) is a measurement of a family's emotional climate based on a parent or caregiver's report of warmth, emotional overinvolvement, hostility, and criticism. The purpose of this study was to describe E…

The Role of Parent-Child Attachment, Hostile Attribution Bias in Aggression: A Meta-Analytic Review.

Parent-Child Attachment (PCA) and Hostile Attribution Bias (HAB) are closely related to aggression, but findings regarding their relationships are inconsistent. There is a lack of understanding of the underlying mechanism between PCA and aggression. This review employed meta-analysis approaches to investigate the associations between PCA and aggression, as well as between HAB and aggression, and the mechanism for the PCA-aggression association. An article search was conducted in CNKI, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. Totally, 118 studies involving general populat

How parents of children with ataxia-telangiectasia use dynamic coping to navigate cyclical uncertainty.

Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare, childhood-onset, multi-systemic, progressive condition. Parents of children with rare diseases like A-T are emotionally, socially, and psychologically impacted by the diagnosis. To examine the parental perspective of having a child with A-T, and to better understand how parents cope with an A-T diagnosis, we conducted 10 semistructured interviews. Thematic analysis using a phenomenological approach resulted in five themes: (1) Parental responsibilities change as the result of an A-T diagnosis, (2) An A-T diagnosis brings about shifts in identity for all f
