Interpersonal violence in prehistoric San Pedro de Atacama, Chile: behavioral implications of environmental stress.

The prehistoric population of San Pedro de Atacama lived through periods marked by prosperity and interregional interaction, as well as time … (10/92) in the Middle Horizon (AD 600-950). Although it may reflect problems related to increasing population density in the oasis, this increase is surprising, given that the early period witnessed the shift to permanent settlements, and the middle period was one of prosperity and plentiful resource availability. Trauma rates peaked at 35.6% (16/45) in an early La …

High prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and reduced bone mass in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Female patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are at risk for osteoporosis because of gender, immobility, and corticosteroid use. METHODS: Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry in 80 female MS patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital. All patients completed a questionnaire that included measurements of dietary intake and sunlight exposure. Biochemical indices of bone metabolism and turnover were measured in a random sample of 52 patients. RESULTS: BMD of the lumbar spine and femoral neck was 1 to 2 SDs lower in MS women compared with a healthy r

Dietary Moringa oleifera oil improves growth performance through modulation of intestinal functionality and physiological homeostasis in Japanese quail.

Dietaat.odulation of intestinal functionality has emerged as an effective nutritional strategy for enhancing poultry productivity by improving digestive efficiency, maintaining microbial balance, and supporting normal physiological functions. Therefore, this study investigated whether dietary supplementation with Moringa oleifera oil could improve intestinal functionality and, consequently, the productive and physiological performance of growing Japanese quail. A total of 375 one-week-old quail chicks were randomly allocated to five dietary treatments receiving a basal diet supplemented with 0

Heterogeneity in the abundance and distribution of Ixodes ricinus and Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) in Scotland: implications for risk prediction.

BACKGROUND: Cases of Lyme borreliosis, a vector-borne zoonosis caused by bacteria in the Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) species group, have increased in recent years in Europe. Knowledge of environmental factors associated with abundance of the tick vector Ixodes ricinus and the pathogen B. burgdorferi (s.l.) is of interest to understand responses to environmental changes, predict variation in risk and to inform management interventions. METHODS: Nineteen woodland sites across Scotland were surveyed in 2012 for B. burgdorferi (s.l.) infection in questing I. ricinus nymphs (n = 200 per site

Associations of BMI and adipose tissue area and density with incident mobility limitation and poor performance in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for disability, but risk of specific adipose depots is not completely understood. OBJECTIVE: We investigated associations between mobility limitation, performance, and the following adipose measures: body mass index (BMI) and areas and densities of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) in older adults. DESIGN: This was a prospective population-based study of men (n = 1459) and women (n = 1552) initially aged 70-79 y and free from mobility limitation. BMI was determined from measured heigh

Arterial, venous and other vascular risk factors in multiple sclerosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews vascular risk factors with specific emphasis on lipid abnormalities reported to be associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). RECENT FINDINGS: The current paradigm of MS, supported only partially by MS lesion histopathology and its animal model (experimental allergic encephalomyelitis) considers MS to be a predominantly autoimmune disease. Until recently, most of the known risk factors for MS were interpreted in the context of the autoimmune theory, which still fails to explain why genetically close populations exposed to similar pathogens and/or environm

Variation in brain regions associated with fear and learning in contrasting climates.

In environments where resources are difficult to obtain and enhanced cognitive capabilities might be adaptive, brain structures associated with cognitive traits may also be enhanced. In our previous studies, we documented a clear and significant relationship among environmental conditions, memory and hippocampal structure using ten populations of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) over a large geographic range. In addition, focusing on just the two populations from the geographical extremes of our large-scale comparison, Alaska and Kansas, we found enhanced problem-solving capabili

Nicarbazin-Based Fertility Control for Urban Pigeon Management: A Review of Experimental, Regulatory and Operational Evidence.

High urban pigeon densities can generate conflicts related to building and heritage damage, public-health concerns, nuisance, and the need for socially acceptable population-management strategies. The management of feral pigeon (Columba livia) populations in urban environments requires approaches that are effective, sustainable, publicly acceptable, and legally compliant. Among available non-lethal options, fertility control based on nicarbazin, originally developed in the 1950s as a poultry anticoccidial before being adapted for urban bird management, has become one of the most extensively in

Incompatible Aedes aegypti male releases as an intervention to reduce mosquito population-A field trial in Puerto Rico.

Mosquito-transmitted viruses such as dengue are a global and growing public health challenge. Without widely available vaccines, mosquito control is the primary tool for fighting the spread of these viruses. New mosquito control technologies are needed to complement existing methods, given current challenges with scalability, acceptability, and effectiveness. A field trial was conducted in collaboration with the Communities Organized to Prevent Arboviruses project in Ponce, Puerto Rico, to measure entomological and epidemiological effects of reducing Aedes aegypti populations using Wolbachia i

Reproductive Drivers of Temporal Telomere Dynamics in Female Tree Swallows.

Understanding trade-offs between life-history traits, particularly between reproductive investment and somatic maintenance, remains a major challenge in evolutionary ecology. Telomeres progressively shorten with age and have been suggested as good predictors of survival and longevity. Both intrinsic factors and external stressors, including high reproductive effort, accelerate telomere attrition. Thus, the dynamic nature of telomere length (TL) offers a promising avenue for assessing individual variation in the cost of reproduction. Here, we quantified telomere length (TL) in breeding female T

Nighttime light dynamics reveal peri-urban brightening and population decoupling in the Chengdu Chongqing megaregion.

Night-time light (NTL) composites offer a unique spatiotemporal view of urban growth by capturing electricity consumption, infrastructure density, and economic activity patterns that traditional land-cover surveys cannot fully reveal, yet inland China's megaregions remain understudied from this perspective. Using a 23-year (2000-2022) cross-calibrated NTL product integrated with land-cover, population, and topographic data, we analysed illumination dynamics in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle. Mean radiance rose by 78% while the lit area expanded from 0.53% to almost 12%. About three-quar

Radiomics identifies distinct cortical bone texture alterations in patients with CKD using HR-pQCT.

Standard clinical imaging metrics perform poorly in predicting skeletal fragility in chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly due to the complex and heterogeneous cortical deterioration that characterizes advanced disease. Here, this study aimed to identify radiomic features derived from high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in tibial cortical bone that distinguish CKD-related differences and may serve as markers of subtle cortical alterations undetected by conventional imaging. HR-pQCT image stacks were obtained from 72 participants (38 non-CKD and 34 with CK

Ancestral FUT2 genetic adaptation confers resistance to modern norovirus and rotavirus infections.

Human genetic diversity plays a key role in modulating susceptibility to infectious diseases, reflecting a long history of host-pathogen co- … rose in frequency under positive selection. The transition to agricultural living, marked by higher population density and increased pathogen exposure, likely intensified selective pressures favoring the FUT2 loss-of-function variant. Today, genetics governing HBGA expression has a range of human health implications, from infection susceptibility, vaccination effect …

Tattoos and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: a population-based case-control study.

The prevalence of tattoos in western countries is about 20%. Tattoo ink may contain carcinogenic compounds. The aim of this study was to investigate if tattoo exposure is associated with an increased risk of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in individuals. In this population-based case-control study, 2857 cases aged 20 to 60 years, diagnosed between 2014 and 2017, were identified in the Swedish Cancer Registry. Statistics Sweden identified 3 random age- and sex-matched controls per case from the Swedish Total Population Register using incidence-density sampling. In 2019, participants answered
