Motives of Dutch men who have sex with men for daily and intermittent HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis usage and preferences for implementation: A qualitative study.

Although PrEP is not yet registered in Europe, including the Netherlands, its approval and implementation are expected in the near future. To inform future pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) implementation, this study aimed to gain insight into motives and preferences for daily or intermittent PrEP use among Dutch HIV-negative men having sex with men (MSM).Between February and December 2013, semistructured interviews were conducted until data saturation was reached (N = 20). Interviews were analyzed using the Grounded Theory approach.Motives for (not) using daily PrEP were based on beliefs about

Trapped in fire: A qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis of causes, challenges, and responses after self-immolation in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Self-immolation is a serious public health problem in Iran, accounting for approximately 16% of admissions for burns, and the victims are predominantly women and young. Despite its prevalence, systematic reviews of qualitative data on the causes, challenges, and responses to self-immolation are sparse. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies that have assessed self-immolation in Iran. We searched the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Scientific Information Database, and Magiran databases until August 2025. We appraised stud

Infrahealth politics: Leveraging bartenders' expertise in alcohol management - An ethnography.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite WHO recommendations, the percentage of persons treated for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is still low. The ever-increasing burden of alcohol intoxication cases on emergency services underscores the necessity for innovative approaches to treat individuals with AUD and to improve harm reduction strategies. Bars are often frequented by individuals with AUD who are not under observation by medical or social services. Recognizing that understanding the social contexts surrounding alcohol consumption is essential for harm reduction, this study examined the often overlooked

Parental and Provider Perceptions of Social Care Impacts on Infant Nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Addressing health-related social needs (HRSNs) is a high-priority public health topic, but little is known about how HRSN and social care interventions relate to infant nutrition and obesity prevention. METHODS: Conducted in-depth interviews in English or Spanish with parents of infants under age 2 years who completed HRSNs screening and providers-clinicians, health care staff, and community-based organization (CBO) representatives-engaged in social care interventions. A modified Chronic Care Model for Childhood Obesity served as the framework for the qualitative interview guide.

Improving implementation of needle and syringe programmes to expand, scale up, and sustain evidence-based prevention interventions for HIV and hepatitis C in prisons.

The 1990 resolution by the UN General Assembly committed member states to provide health-care equity for people in prison, who are included in the global goals to control HIV and eliminate hepatitis C virus (HCV) by 2030. WHO has set ambitious HCV elimination targets by including people who inject drugs (PWID), yet has not prioritised PWID who are incarcerated, a substantial population who have or are at risk for HCV infection. Human rights principles of health-care equity stipulate that "prisoners should enjoy the same standards of health care that are available in the community, without disc

Recommendations for developing effective and safe paediatric and congenital heart disease services in low-income and middle-income countries: a public health framework.

The global burden of paediatric and congenital heart disease (PCHD) is substantial. We propose a novel public health framework with recommendations for developing effective and safe PCHD services in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). This framework was created by the Global Initiative for Children's Surgery Cardiac Surgery working group in collaboration with a group of international rexperts in providing paediatric and congenital cardiac care to patients with CHD and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in LMICs. Effective and safe PCHD care is inaccessible to many, and there is no conse

Transforming Direct Care Jobs, Reimagining Long-Term Services and Supports.

The diverse array of individuals who receive long-term services and supports share one common experience, which is the need for assistance with personal care and/or other daily activities. The direct care workers (including nursing assistants, home health aides, and personal care aides) who provide this assistance play a critical role in keeping individuals safe, supporting their health and well-being, and helping prevent adverse outcomes. Yet despite decades of research, advocacy, and incremental policy and practice reform, direct care workers remain inadequately compensated, supported, and r

Chronic Morbidity Among Older Children and Adolescents at Diagnosis of HIV Infection.

BACKGROUND: Substantial numbers of children with HIV present to health care services in older childhood and adolescence, previously undiagnosed. These "slow-progressors" may experience considerable chronic ill health, which is not well characterized. We investigated the prevalence of chronic morbidity among children aged 6-15 years at diagnosis of HIV infection. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed at 7 primary care clinics in Harare, Zimbabwe. Children aged 6-15 years who tested HIV positive following provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling were recruited. A detailed clinical

An Evaluation of Mpowerment on Individual-Level HIV Risk Behavior, Testing, and Psychosocial Factors Among Young MSM of Color: The Monitoring and Evaluation of MP (MEM) Project.

Young men who have sex with men (MSM) of color are at increased risk for HIV infection. Mpowerment (MP) is an intervention designed to reduce risky sexual behavior and increase HIV testing among young MSM ages 18-29. From 2009 to 2012, three community-based organizations with support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention evaluated MP among N = 298 participants. Following a repeated measures design, data from 3- and 6-month follow-ups were compared to baseline. HIV testing and self-efficacy for safer sex increased at both follow-up time points; self-acceptance as an MSM was h

Cardiovascular Screening for the Asymptomatic Patient with Diabetes: More Cons Than Pros.

Diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) morbidity and mortality. Although it frequently coexists with other cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, it confers an increased risk for CVD events on its own. Coronary atherosclerosis is generally more aggressive and widespread in people with diabetes (PWD) and is frequently asymptomatic. Screening for silent myocardial ischaemia can be applied in a wide variety of ways. In nearly all asymptomatic PWD, however, the results of screening will generally not change medical therapy, since aggressive preve
