BACKGROUND: Asthma prevalence in Latin America is high and continues to increase. There is evidence that the psychologic characteristics of the child are associated with greater asthma morbidity. This study aimed to investigate the independent effect of internalizing/externalizing problems on two asthma/wheeze outcomes: (i) remission and (ii) progression to severity on Latin American children with mild asthma symptoms at baseline.
METHODS: This was a prospective study in a cohort of 371 asthmatic children living in a poor urban area in Salvador, Brazil. The psychologic characteristics of the

There are approximately 20 million students in U.S. colleges and universities. Although this population is characterized as having good health, 600,000 students report some form of disability or some type of medical problem, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities, psychiatric disorders, and chronic illnesses, among others. Physicians can enhance youth transition to an adult model of health care; the use of self-care skills checklists is one recommended method to assist with the transition. Stimulant medications are effective for treating adults with attention

The relationship between interparental conflict, hostile parenting, and children's externalizing problems is well established. Few studies, however, have examined the pattern of association underlying this constellation of family and child level variables while controlling for the possible confounding presence of passive genotype-environment correlation. Using the attributes of 2 genetically sensitive research designs, the present study examined associations among interparental conflict, parent-to-child hostility, and children's externalizing problems among genetically related and genetically

Over the last decade, much research has been conducted to investigate why older listeners report more difficulty in understanding spoken language than would be expected given their degree of audiometric hearing loss. Of particular relevance to audiological rehabilitation is recent research on older listeners when they are engaged in complex tasks involving the auditory processing of naturalistic signals in realistic social and physical environments Discourse epitomizes such activity. By understanding age-related and individual differences in perceptual and cognitive performance, we gain import

Theories of cognitive development propose that cultural values shape metacognitive skills. However, cross-cultural research on metacognition remains limited and often relies on verbal assessments that may lack validity across cultural contexts. The present study examined metacognitive monitoring in Kenyan, Chinese, and U.S. children (N = 95; 6-10-year-olds; 46% female) using a non-verbal problem-solving task in which children assembled objects according to a model. Across all three cultural contexts, children exhibited various monitoring behaviors (e.g., checking the model), and the frequency

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are neurobehavioral disorders in which behavioral abnormalities are common but often not recognized.
OBJECTIVE: To bring to life the actual descriptions rendered by our patients of their unusual experiences.
METHODS: Members of the Parkinson Study Group were asked to provide illustrative examples of particularly memorable abnormal behaviors that their own PD patients or family members reported.
RESULTS: These recollections were deidentified and sorted into categories. These disorders include the classically described s

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is characterized by hypotonia, distinctive facial features, hyperphagia, obesity, short stature, hypogonadism, intellectual disability, and behavior problems. Uncontrolled hyperphagia can lead to dangerous food-seeking behavior and with life-threatening obesity. Severe obesity is prone to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and can lead to cor pulmonale. This study reports on a case involving a 21-year-old man with PWS who developed OSA due to severe obesity, which led to cor pulmonale, a life-threatening complication. Multidisciplinary care provided in the intensive care

This study examined the contribution of cochlear implants (CIs) to the social-emotional functioning of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (dhh). Sixty-three parents of children who are dhh participated in the study. Thirty children were CI users and 32 used hearing aids (HAs). They completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and a background questionnaire. Parents of children with CIs reported lower levels of hyperactivity/inattention and higher levels of pro-social behavior compared to parents of children with HAs. Additionally, older age when hearing loss was detected was re

Headaches in children and adolescents remain a very common problem with migraine being the most common headache disorder to present to medical attention. The approach to the treatment of migraine in children has consisted of treatment with acute and preventive medications, combined with lifestyle modification and behavioral interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy. With increasing frequency, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches, including acupuncture, are often recommended in the pediatric population to address significant disability with limited evidence-based tr

This study explored South Asian immigrant women survivors' perspectives on intimate partner relationships that could lead to severe violence or a homicide and sources of resilience for South Asian immigrant survivors in the United States. The study recruited 16 South Asian immigrant survivors for in-depth interviews and focus groups. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Survivors shared some characteristics of dangerous partner such as controlling behavior, anger issues, infidelity, alcohol and drug problems, and history of childhood abuse. Incidents of severe physical abuse, threats to

Drawing from recent research on counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) and moral self-regulation literature, we examine the intraindividual consequences of engaging in CWB. We posit that CWB represents morally discrediting work behaviors that can lead to moral deficits, create distress for perpetrators and ultimately result in insomnia. Specifically, we hypothesized that on days in which employees engage in CWB, they will tend to experience moral deficits and heightened levels of rumination that undermine their sleep that night. Moreover, we hypothesized that these effects will be stronger for

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is caused by the absence of paternal expression of imprinted genes in the region at 15q11–q13. With an estimated birth incidence of 1/15 000 – 1/30 000, PWS is one of the more frequent genetic syndromes among humans. Typical physical features include neonatal hypotonia and feeding problems, hypogonadism, hyperphagia in later childhood with consecutive obesity, and short stature. Most people with PWS show a mild to moderate intellectual disability. Furthermore, lability of mood, temper tantrums, skin-picking, and compulsive behaviors are quite typical for subjects wi

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical option for advanced Parkinson's disease. Although DBS is used to treat motor fluctuation, DBS may affect non-motor symptoms including mood disorders, cognitive dysfunction, and behavior problems. Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are abnormal behaviors with various manifestations such as pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, and binge eating, which can affect the quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease. The effect of DBS on ICD is controversial. Reducing medication by DBS may improve ICDs, however, worsening or even d

The intensive care unit (ICU) is the most common place to die. Also, ethical conflicts among stakeholders occur frequently in the ICU. Thus, ICU clinicians should be competent in all aspects for ethical decision-making. Major sources of conflicts are behavioral issues, such as verbal abuse or poor communication between physicians and nurses, and end-of-life care issues including a lack of respect for the patient's autonomy. The ethical conflicts are significantly associated with the job strain and burn-out syndrome of healthcare workers, and consequently, may threaten the quality of care. To i

The aim of the study was to evaluate prevalence and impact of behavioral/emotional symptoms in preschoolers. The sample comprised 1,738 preschoolers with an age range between 37 and 63 months. Parents rated children's symptoms using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the impact of perceived difficulties using the impact supplement of the SDQ. The prevalence of a total difficulties score in an abnormal/borderline range was 16.0 % that means lower than rates in schoolchildren. 8.6 % of the preschoolers were rated as symptomatic (borderline/abnormal) and their symptoms were ra

Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS, OMIM: 610883) is a microduplication syndrome characterized by infantile hypotonia, failure to thrive, cardiovascular malformations, developmental delay, intellectual disability, and behavior abnormalities, the latter of which can include autism spectrum disorder. The majority of individuals with PTLS harbor a de novo microduplication of chromosome 17p11.2 reciprocal to the common recurrent 3.6 Mb microdeletion in the Smith-Magenis syndrome critical region. Here, we report on the transmission of the PTLS duplication across two generations in two separate families.
