Variation in trauma-related behavioral effects using a preclinical rat model of three predator exposure stress.

The underlying mechanisms of trauma-related disorders are challenging to discover and the disorders are difficult to treat, in part due to the complex and varied expressions of response to traumatic stress. These challenges will be easier to overcome as more is understood about the variability in response to trauma. Incorporating assessment of variability into animal models of traumatic stress may allow better translation to clinical research and treatment development. In this study, we characterized variability in behavioral responses following traumatic stress exposure using a predator expos

Environmental enrichment modulates HPA axis reprogramming in adult male rats exposed to early adolescent stress.

Exposure to early stressful events increases susceptibility to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood, in which the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis plays a crucial role. Studies have found that environmental enrichment (EE) mitigates the detrimental outcomes of early adversity. However, the HPA-related mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we used the single prolonged stress (SPS) paradigm to explore the long-term effects of early adolescent stress on behavior, HPA axis activity, as well as expression levels of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), mineralocorticoid recep

Ginsenoside Rg1 fails to rescue PTSD-like behaviors in a mice model of single-prolonged stress.

Previous studies reported that ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1) exerts antidepressant-like effect in animal models of depression. However, its effect on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains elusive; PTSD is a common and costly psychiatric condition with negative cognitive and affective dysfunctions, such as anxiety and depression. In this study, we evaluated the role of Rg1 in a validated mice model of PTSD induced by single-prolonged stress (SPS). Sertraline, one of the FDA-approved medications for PTSD was used as a positive control. Our results showed that SPS exposure led to increased anxiet

The culture, mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of Rohingya refugees: a systematic review.

AIMS: Despite the magnitude and protracted nature of the Rohingya refugee situation, there is limited information on the culture, mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of this group. This paper, drawing on a report commissioned by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the literature on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of Rohingya refugees, including an examination of associated cultural factors. The ultimate objective is to assist humanitarian actors and agencies in providing culturally relevant Mental Health and Psyc

What about me? The loss of self through the experience of traumatic childbirth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: birth trauma has become an increasingly recognised maternal mental health issue and has important implications for both mother and infant. The importance of subjective birth experience in the development of birth trauma has been identified and may mediate the lack of theoretical consistency in this area. The current study aims to explore the subjective experience of birth trauma among first time mothers in Ireland. It aims to separate the potential effects of peripartum depression (PPD) from this in limiting this qualitative investigation to women who reported birth t

Risk of Depressive Symptoms Associated with Morbidity in Postpartum Women in Rural Bangladesh.

UNLABELLED: Objectives Depression following pregnancy is common, but its extent and association with maternal morbidity in the first 6 months postpartum have not been well described in low resource settings such as rural Bangladesh. Methods We used data from a population-based, community trial of approximately 39,000 married rural Bangladeshi women aged 13-44 between 2001 and 2007 to examine the relation between women's reported morbidity symptoms from childbirth to 3 months postpartum, and subsequent depressive symptoms assessed at 6 months postpartum. We calculated crude and adjusted risk ra

Domains of Social Support That Predict Bereavement Distress Following Homicide Loss.

Psychological adaptation following homicide loss can prove more challenging for grievers than other types of losses. Although social support can be beneficial in bereavement, research is mixed in terms of identifying whether it serves as a buffer to distress following traumatic loss. In particular, studies have not parsed out specific domains of social support that best predict positive bereavement outcomes. Recruiting a sample of 47 African Americans bereaved by homicide, we examined six types of social support along with the griever's perceived need for or satisfaction with each and analyzed

Betray my trust, shame on me: Shame, dissociation, fear, and betrayal trauma.

Recent research suggests that betrayal is a fundamental dimension of trauma that may be a major factor contributing to posttraumatic distress (Freyd & Birrell, 2013). In the current study using a college student sample of female trauma survivors, (N = 124; 79% Caucasian; mean age = 20.40, SD = 3.60), we examined the contribution of high- and low-betrayal trauma history to shame, dissociation, and fear responses to threat. We hypothesized that (a) overall, shame and dissociation would be higher following interpersonal compared with noninterpersonal threat; (b) high- but not low-betrayal trauma

The Driving Behavior Survey as a measure of behavioral stress responses to MVA-related PTSD.

Numerous treatments are available that address the core symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there are a number of related behavioral stress responses that are not assessed with PTSD measures, yet these behavioral stress responses affect quality of life. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether a recently developed measure of behavioral stress response, the Driving Behavior Survey (DBS), was sensitive to change associated with treatment among a group of participants diagnosed with PTSD. The DBS indexes anxious driving behavior, which is frequently observed

Impact of daily assessments on distress and PTSD symptoms in trauma-exposed women.

As more advanced methodologies are developed for symptom assessment in traumatic stress studies, it is important to examine how these methodologies can exacerbate distress or contribute to symptoms among study participants. Using a sample of 202 female college students, we examined the changes in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and general psychological symptomatology among groups of trauma-exposed and non-trauma-exposed women randomly assigned to complete 30 days of daily monitoring of traumatic symptoms and substance use behaviors using personal digital assistants (PDAs). These

Mindfulness intervention for child abuse survivors.

Twenty-seven adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse participated in a pilot study comprising an 8-week mindfulness meditation-based stress reduction (MBSR) program and daily home practice of mindfulness skills. Three refresher classes were provided through final follow-up at 24 weeks. Assessments of depressive symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and mindfulness, were conducted at baseline, 4, 8, and 24 weeks. At 8 weeks, depressive symptoms were reduced by 65%. Statistically significant improvements were observed in all outcomes post-MBSR, with effect sizes above 1.0.

Pretrauma problems, prior stressor exposure, and gender as predictors of change in posttraumatic stress symptoms among physically injured children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study addressed predictors of change in posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among youths who had experienced physical injuries. The influences of pretrauma internalizing and externalizing problems, prior stressor exposure, and gender were investigated. Additionally, gender was examined as a moderator of the associations between internalizing problems and PTSS, externalizing problems and PTSS, and prior stressor exposure and PTSS. METHOD: Participants were 157 children and adolescents (75% male; age M = 13.30 years, SD = 3.60; 44% Caucasian, 39% African American, 13% Hispanic,

Toward an ethnography of silence: the lived presence of the past in the everyday life of Holocaust trauma survivors and their descendants in Israel.

Despite the abundant scholarship on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the memoropolitics entailed by testimonial accounts of trauma and genocide, little is known of the everyday experience of trauma survivors and their descendants. Survivor silence is thought to signify only psychological or political repression and the "unspeakability" of traumatic pasts. It is widely accepted that the everyday lives of trauma victims and their descendants entail only the "absence of presence" of the past and the absence of descendant knowledge of that past, while the familial social milieu is thought

Veteran-Related Intimate Partner Violence: Results From a Multidisciplinary and Evidence-Informed Panel Process.

INTRODUCTION: Congressional legislation mandated research on intimate partner violence (IPV) among veterans. We convened a panel addressing veteran-related IPV to arrive at evidence-based recommendations. METHODS: A panel composed of community, decision-maker, health service provider, and research representatives addressed veteran-related IPV prevalence, risk factors, consequences, and interventions. The panel process followed a modified Delphi approach centered around 2 days of virtual moderated discussions and pre- and post-panel surveys. RESULTS: Panelists stressed that definitions must i

What we talk about when we talk about psychiatric mental health nurses' work-related distress: An umbrella review and concept mapping network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Work-related distress contributes to high turnover rates and mental health challenges among psychiatric and mental health nurses. Nurses' work-related distress is characterized by multiple, often overlapping constructs such as burnout, compassion fatigue, or secondary traumatic stress. Conceptual ambiguity and overlap among these constructs limits a clear understanding of the nature and scope of nurses' work-related distress. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify similarities and differences among nurses' work-related distress constructs by examining how they are used within the

Preclinical assessment for selectively disrupting a traumatic memory via postretrieval inhibition of glucocorticoid receptors.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic experiences may lead to debilitating psychiatric disorders including acute stress disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. Current treatments for these conditions are largely ineffective, and novel therapies are needed. A cardinal symptom of these pathologies is the reexperiencing of the trauma through intrusive memories and nightmares. Studies in animal models indicate that memories can be weakened by interfering with the postretrieval restabilization process known as memory reconsolidation. We previously reported that, in rats, intraamygdala injection of the glucocor

Acute stress response and recovery after whiplash injuries. A one-year prospective study.

Chronic whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) represents a major medical and psycho-social problem. The typical symptomatology presented in WAD is to some extent similar to symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. In this study we examined if the acute stress reaction following a whiplash injury predicted long-term sequelae. Participants with acute whiplash-associated symptoms after a motor vehicle accident were recruited from emergency units and general practitioners. The predictor variable was the sum score of the impact of event scale (IES) completed within 10 days after the accident. The m

The use of exposure in anxiety-related disorders and associations with practitioner characteristics.

Despite their well-established efficacy in anxiety treatment, exposure-based interventions are underutilized. Surveying 190 practitioners (122 completed), the current study examined the use of exposure in various anxiety-related disorders and associations with practitioner-related characteristics. Results indicate that across anxiety-related disorders, exposure was used in 65.73% of the patients and on average 41.30% of treatment time is spent on exposure. More training and a CBT orientation are associated with higher utilization, perceived competence, and effectiveness. Practitioners used exp

Mental Health, Substance Use, Trauma Exposure, and Experiences of Discrimination Among Caregivers of Youth With Juvenile Legal System Involvement.

Family-focused interventions for youth with juvenile legal system involvement place emphasis on improving caregiver wellbeing. However, there is limited work to date characterizing the prevalence and determinants of behavioral health concerns among these caregivers. The present study sought to examine among 100 caregivers of youth with juvenile legal system involvement: (a) rates of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and cannabis and alcohol use; (b) frequency of exposure to traumatic events and discrimination; and (c) the association between experiences of traumatic events and discrimination and beha
