Psychiatric diagnoses of treatment-seeking cocaine abusers.

In a sample of 298 cocaine abusers seeking inpatient (n = 149) or outpatient (n = 149) treatment, rates of psychiatric disorders were determined by means of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Research Diagnostic Criteria. Overall, 55.7% met current and 73.5% met lifetime criteria for a psychiatric disorder other than a substance use disorder. In common with previous reports from clinical samples of cocaine abusers, these overall rates were largely accounted for by major depression, minor bipolar conditions (eg, hypomania, cyclothymic personality), anxiety disorders, antisocial personalit

Characteristics of Iranian women seeking drug treatment.

BACKGROUND: In the west, men are twice as likely as women to develop a drug problem, but female users have higher rates of morbidity than male users. Iran has the world highest per capita opiate consumption, but little is known about female drug users. In 2007, we established a free methadone clinic with ancillary services for female drug users in South Tehran. The aim was to explore the characteristics of female drug users seeking treatment for heroin dependence in Iran. Clients were interviewed about demographic characteristics, drug use and treatment history, and drug-related health problem

Personality profiles of substance and behavioral addictions.

Substance-related and behavioral addictions are extremely prevalent and represent a major public health concern. In the ongoing attempt to understand the addictive personality, contradictory results have arisen from studies that have explored personality traits in different addiction populations. The diversity across addiction types suggests that some of these inconsistencies stem from distinct personalities underlying each addiction. The present study compares the personality profiles of several addictions, representing both substance (drugs and alcohol) and behavioral (gambling and sex) subt

Culturally Engaged REcovery - MOms connected through Native CommunitY (CEREMONY): An Implementation Study to Evaluate the Adaptation and Implementation of an Integrated Perinatal SUD Clinical Model for Pregnant and Postpartum Native People.

Deaths related to substance use disorders and mental health concerns are leading causes of maternal mortality, particularly in the postpartum period. Integrated perinatal substance use care that streamlines substance use disorders (SUD) treatment and prenatal care into a single setting improves perinatal outcomes, including postpartum follow-up and engagement in treatment for SUD, which may ultimately reduce maternal mortality. Native pregnant and postpartum people have identified a lack of culturally responsive care, as well as stigma, bias, and racism, as barriers to entry into SUD care and

Stigmatization of people with addiction by health professionals: Current knowledge. A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Stigma of people with substance and non-substance use disorders (SNSUD) is a long-known phenomenon. The aim of this review was to assess the stigmatization, by health professionals, of people with SNSUD, its characteristics and change over time. METHODS: A scoping review of literature reviews was conducted with systematic search of PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO databases. RESULTS: From the 19 selected reviews, all focused on people with SUD (PWSUD) only and 20 % to 51 % of health professionals had negative attitudes/beliefs about SUD. Addiction training and clinical experience with

Multi-omics study reveals associations among neurotransmitter, extracellular vesicle-derived microRNA and psychiatric comorbidities during heroin and methamphetamine withdrawal.

Despite decades of research in the field of substance withdrawal, molecular biomarkers and related mechanistic study have generally been lacking. In addition to known neurotransmitters, circulating miRNAs are found in small vesicles known as exosomes within blood that have diagnostic potential and are known to contribute to psychiatric disorders. The aim of this work was to characterize the changes in neurotransmitter and exosomal miRNA profiles during heroin and methamphetamine withdrawal using a cross-sectional study design, and to determine their associations to psychiatric comorbidities in

Cue-induced effects on decision-making distinguish subjects with gambling disorder from healthy controls.

While an increased impact of cues on decision-making has been associated with substance dependence, it is yet unclear whether this is also a phenotype of non-substance-related addictive disorders, such as gambling disorder (GD). To better understand the basic mechanisms of impaired decision-making in addiction, we investigated whether cue-induced changes in decision-making could distinguish GD from healthy control (HC) subjects. We expected that cue-induced changes in gamble acceptance and specifically in loss aversion would distinguish GD from HC subjects. Thirty GD subjects and 30 matched HC

Heatwaves and their impact on people with alcohol, drug and mental health conditions: a discussion paper on clinical practice considerations.

AIM: This article discusses the clinical implications of adverse health outcomes derived during heatwaves for people with mental health disorders, substance misuse and those taking prescribed medications such as lithium, various neuroleptic and anticholinergic drugs. BACKGROUND: With climate change it is predicted that the incidence of prolonged periods of extreme heat will increase. Specific adverse health outcomes associated with high environmental temperatures include heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Those at increased risk for heat-related mortality are those with chronic health condition

Project Harmony 2.0: protocol for an updated and expanded individual patient data meta-analysis and virtual clinical trial of treatments for comorbid PTSD and substance use disorders.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) commonly co-occur. Several treatments for co-occurring PTSD and SUD (PTSD + SUD) exist, yet evidence for comparative treatment effectiveness is restricted by a historical emphasis on symptom severity and substance consumption endpoints instead of recovery-oriented outcomes. Moreover, extant syntheses relied on conventional analytic approaches prioritizing standardized mean group differences, instead of clinically significant change (CSC), and included few pharmacological randomized clinical trials (RCTs).Objecti

Clinical characteristics of a sample of 90 detainees for jihadist terrorism.

INTRODUCTION: Although research into the process of jihadist radicalization has developed in less than 10 years, few studies on the subject have been carried out by psychiatrists, and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among people incarcerated for terrorism in France is unknown. Our objectives were to estimate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in a sample of people incarcerated for jihadist terrorism and to characterize and compare men and women (socio-demographics, psychiatric diagnoses, trauma, substances, conversion to Islam). METHOD: Ninety adults in detention for jihadist ter

Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder With Stimulants: Reducing Harms.

An increase in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses since 2020, along with shortages in prescription stimulants and an increase in overdose deaths from stimulants, has triggered alarm within the public sector, regulatory agencies, and health care systems. Stimulants are classified as Schedule II drugs by the Drug Enforcement Administration due to the potential for misuse and physiological and psychological dependence. Despite concerns, stimulants are effective first-line treatments for children and adults with ADHD. The majority of deaths related to stimulants are linked t

Prevalence and comorbidity of mental health concerns, alcohol and drug use among young women in the urban slums of Kampala, Uganda: findings from the TOPOWA study.

BACKGROUND: Young women in Kampala’s urban slums face a growing public health crisis as mental health issues and substance use escalate, fueled by poverty, violence, and limited access to care. These overlapping challenges significantly heighten the risks of suicide, premature mortality, and diminished quality of life. This study investigates the prevalence of mental health concerns, substance use, and their co-occurrence among this vulnerable population in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: Data were drawn from the ongoing TOPOWA study, involving 300 women recruited via convenience sampling in 2023 fr

Prevalence of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Among Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness: A Systematic Review.

Adolescents with existing mental health and substance use disorders are at higher risk for homelessness, and being homeless can further exacerbate these issues. However, no systematic review has specifically assessed the prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders among homeless adolescents using validated diagnostic measures. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders among adolescents experiencing homelessness, based on studies employing validated diagnostic measures. A systematic search was conducted across electronic

Social support among women with infertility: Associations with psychiatric symptoms, disordered eating, and substance use.

Though social support in the broader population is related to better psychosocial outcomes, little work has examined the relationship between social support and patient-reported outcomes among women with infertility. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether perceived social support was associated with psychiatric symptoms, disordered eating, and substance use among women with an infertility diagnosis. Individuals who received a diagnosis of female-factor infertility (N = 188) completed measures of perceived social support, psychiatric symptoms, disordered eating, and substance use.
