Quantitative correlation between cardiac MIBG uptake and remaining axons in the cardiac sympathetic nerve in Lewy body disease.

OBJECTIVES: Reduced cardiac meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake and loss of cardiac sympathetic axons, as its possible anatomical substrate, were both recognised in Lewy body disease (LBD), while their direct correlation has so far remained speculative. Increasing availability of autopsy-confirmed cases of LBD prompted us to quantify residual cardiac sympathetic axons to establish their relationship to cardiac MIBG uptake. METHODS: We collected cardiac tissue samples from 23 patients with autopsy-confirmed LBD and two non-LBD control patients who underwent (123)I-MIBG cardiac scintigraphy

Aldosterone and Salt Loading Independently Exacerbate the Exercise Pressor Reflex in Rats.

The sympathetic and pressor responses to exercise are exaggerated in hypertension. Evidence suggests that an overactive exercise pressor reflex (EPR) contributes to this abnormal responsiveness. The mechanisms underlying this EPR overactivity are poorly understood. An increasing body of evidence suggests that aldosterone and excessive salt intake play a role in regulating resting sympathetic activity and blood pressure in hypertension. Therefore, each is a good candidate for the generation of EPR dysfunction in this disease. The purpose of this study was to examine whether excessive salt intak

Sympathetic overactivity occurs before hypertension in the two-kidney, one-clip model.

Our knowledge of mechanisms responsible for both the development and the maintenance of hypertension remains incomplete in the Goldblatt (two-kidney, one-clip; 2K1C) model. We tested the hypothesis that elevated sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) occurs before the onset of hypertension in 2K1C rats, considering the time course of the increase in SNA in relationship to the onset of the hypertension. We used a decorticated in situ working heart-brainstem preparation of three groups of male Wistar rats, namely sham-operated animals (SHAM, n = 7) and animals 3 weeks post-2K1C, of which some were hyp

Sympathoadrenal balance and physiological stress response in cattle at spontaneous and PGF2α-induced calving.

Increased cortisol release in parturient cows may either represent a stress response or is part of the endocrine changes that initiate calving. Acute stress elicits an increase in heart rate and decrease in heart rate variability (HRV). Therefore, we analyzed cortisol concentration, heart rate and HRV variables standard deviation of beat-to-beat interval (SDRR) and root mean square of successive beat-to-beat intervals (RMSSD) in dairy cows allowed to calve spontaneously (SPON, n = 6) or with PGF2α-induced preterm parturition (PG, n = 6). We hypothesized that calving is a stressor, but induced

[Correlation between sympathetic nervous activity of the skin and local temperature of skin projections of the spinal nerves in the course of rehabilitation of the patients presenting with dorsopathies].

We undertook the correlation analysis of the parameters characterizing the intensity of the skin sympathetic reactions and local temperature of skin projections of the spinal nerves in three groups of patients presenting with dorsopathies and differing in terms of sympathetic regulation of the microvasculature. It was shown that the patients of group 1 exhibited positive correlation between the above parameters (preserved vegetative regulation of microcirculation despite the tendency toward its atonic-stagnant disturbances). The patients of group 2 showed negative correlation between these par

Heart rate variability predicts levels of inflammatory markers: Evidence for the vagal anti-inflammatory pathway.

Evidence from numerous animal models shows that vagal activity regulates inflammatory responses by decreasing cytokine release. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a reliable index of cardiac vagal regulation and should be inversely related to levels of inflammatory markers. Inflammation is also regulated by sympathetic inputs, but only one previous paper controlled for this. In a larger and more representative sample, we sought to replicate those results and examine potential sex differences in the relationship between HRV and inflammatory markers. Using data from the MIDUS II study, we analyzed

Intermittent hypoxia and diet-induced obesity: effects on oxidative status, sympathetic tone, plasma glucose and insulin levels, and arterial pressure.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) consists of sleep-related repetitive obstructions of upper airways that generate episodes of recurrent or intermittent hypoxia (IH). OSA commonly generates cardiovascular and metabolic pathologies defining the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Literature usually links OSA-associated pathologies to IH episodes that would cause an oxidative status and a carotid body-mediated sympathetic hyperactivity. Because cardiovascular and metabolic pathologies in obese patients and those with OSAS are analogous, we used models (24-wk-old Wistar rats) of IH (applied from

Periodic limb movements during sleep and their effect on the cardiovascular system: is there a final answer?

Periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) is a sleep-related movement disorder characterized by repetitive limb movements during sleep, seen predominantly in the legs but also occasionally involving the arms. These movements may be associated with arousals that can lead to increases in sympathetic tone, resulting in tachycardia and elevated systolic blood pressure. Chronic sustained tachycardia and elevated systolic blood pressure are known to be associated with the development of arrhythmias, hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, and congestive heart failure. However, the data are not

Cardiac autonomic modulation is determined by gender and is independent of aerobic physical capacity in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: Aerobic physical capacity plays an important role in reducing morbidity and mortality rates in subjects with cardiovascular diseases. This action is often related to an improvement in the autonomic modulation of heart rate variability (HRV). However, controversies remain regarding the effects of physical training on cardiac autonomic control in healthy subjects. Therefore, our objective was to investigate whether aerobic capacity interferes with the autonomic modulation of HRV and whether gender differences exist. METHODS: Healthy men and women (N=96) were divided into groups acco

Comorbidity of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome in an Australian cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are frequently diagnosed with comorbid postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), suggesting a shared pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics, autonomic functioning and fatigue levels amongst CFS patients with and without comorbid POTS. DESIGN AND SETTING: All patients presenting to the CFS Discovery Clinic between 2009 and 2012 completed a 20-min standing task as part of their initial assessment. Heart rate and pulse pressure were recorded at baseline, at 2-min inter

First bite syndrome following ipsilateral carotid endarterectomy.

First bite syndrome (FBS) is characterized by unilateral pain in the parotid region after the first bite of each meal, usually following ipsilateral neck surgery. The proposed mechanism is sympathetic denervation of the parotid gland, from iatrogenic injury to the sympathetic trunk supplying this gland. Local botulinum toxin injection has emerged as a promising treatment option with favorable results. To date, there are 3 published cases in the literature describing FBS after carotid endarterectomy. We present a case of a 75-year-old gentleman who developed FBS after carotid endarterectomy, to

Thoracoscopic excision of the sympathetic chain: an easy and effective treatment for hyperhidrosis in children.

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic sympathectomy (TS) is an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis. Various surgical approaches are described in the literature. We describe the technique of thoracoscopic excision of the sympathetic chain done exclusively in children younger than 13 years. METHODS: All patients younger than 13 years who underwent TS from 2006 at a single institution were prospectively identified and fully evaluated with emphasis on demographic data, age, surgical management, complications and follow-up. All patients were contacted again at the end of 2009 to complete a follow-up questio

The influence of transcutaneous electrical neurostimulation (TENS) on human cerebral blood flow velocities.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that transcutaneous electrical neurostimulation (TENS) reduces sympathetic tone. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has proven qualities to improve coronary, peripheral, and cerebral blood circulation. Therefore, we postulate that TENS and SCS affect the autonomic nervous system in analogous ways. In this line of thought, cervical application of TENS might be a useful and simple adjunct in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease by improving cerebral blood flow. Experiments were performed in order to assess whether cervical TENS is safe and whether an effect on cerebr

Spontanous periodic breathing is associated with sympathetic hyperreactivity and baroreceptor dysfunction in hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: Intermittent periods of hypoxemia such as during periodic breathing are associated with hypertension and increased sympathetic activity. In patients with sleep apnea syndrome, hypertension is common. Treating apnea improves hypertension and reduces sympathetic outflow. The aim of the present study was to investigate the phenomenon and mechanisms of spontaneous periodic breathing in patients with hypertension. METHOD: We examined 43 hypertensive patients with untreated hypertension without left-ventricular dysfunction, heart failure or sleep apnea syndrome. Muscle sympathetic nerve

Angiotensin II disproportionally attenuates dynamic vagal and sympathetic heart rate controls.

To better understand the pathophysiological role of angiotensin II (ANG II) in the dynamic autonomic regulation of heart rate (HR), we examined the effects of intravenous administration of ANG II (10 microg.kg(-1).h(-1)) on the transfer function from vagal or sympathetic nerve stimulation to HR in anesthetized rabbits with sinoaortic denervation and vagotomy. In the vagal stimulation group (n = 7), we stimulated the right vagal nerve for 10 min using binary white noise (0-10 Hz). The transfer function from vagal stimulation to HR approximated a first-order low-pass filter with pure delay. ANG

Low frequency component in systolic arterial pressure variability in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia characterized by irregular ventricular response. During AF, beat-to-beat variability of arterial pressure (AP) is increased because of continuous changes in filling time, stroke volume and contractility. Only a few studies have analyzed short-term AP variability during AF but they were mainly focused on the effects of respiration. We therefore analyzed short-term systolic (S), diastolic (D) and mean (M) AP variability by autoregressive method and an FFT-based spectral estimation (Welch periodogram) in 26 patients with persistent AF before and aft
