Ictal unilateral hyperkinetic proximal lower limb movements: an independent lateralising sign suggesting ipsilateral seizure onset.

Our aim was to determine the lateralising value of ictal repetitive unilateral hyperkinetic proximal lower limb movements. Among 16 patients with ictal hyperkinetic features who underwent intracranial EEG between 2008 and 2011 in our centre, three had repetitive unilateral hyperkinetic proximal lower limb movements, sometimes associated with "hemiballic-like" movements of the ipsilateral upper limb. There were no other consistent lateralising signs. In all patients, these movements were ipsilateral to the ictal onset zone and started a few seconds after electroencephalographic seizure onset. I

Trans-saccadic parafoveal preview benefits in fluent reading: a study with fixation-related brain potentials.

During natural reading, a parafoveal preview of the upcoming word facilitates its subsequent recognition (e.g., shorter fixation durations compared to masked preview) but nothing is known about the neural correlates of this so-called preview benefit. Furthermore, while the evidence is strong that readers preprocess orthographic features of upcoming words, it is controversial whether word meaning can also be accessed parafoveally. We investigated the timing, scope, and electrophysiological correlates of parafoveal information use in reading by simultaneously recording eye movements and fixation

The neural substrates of inferential and referential semantic processing.

INTRODUCTION: A distinction has been proposed, on theoretical grounds, between referential and inferential semantic abilities. The former account for the relationship of words to the world, the latter for the relationship of words among themselves. The hypothesis of, at least partially, different neurological underpinnings for this distinction has been supported by the presence of double dissociations in neurological patients between tasks that can be considered to tap the cognitive processes involving these two different classes of semantic knowledge, such as, for example, picture naming (ref

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and language.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique inducing prolonged brain excitability changes and promoting cerebral plasticity, is a promising option for neurorehabilitation. Here, we review progress in research on tDCS and language functions and on the potential role of tDCS in the treatment of post-stroke aphasia. Currently available data suggest that tDCS over language-related brain areas can modulate linguistic abilities in healthy individuals and can improve language performance in patients with aphasia. Whether the results obtained in experimenta

Aberrant resting-state connectivity in non-psychotic individuals with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Although auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a core symptom of schizophrenia, they also occur in non-psychotic individuals, in the absence of other psychotic, affective, cognitive and negative symptoms. AVH have been hypothesized to result from deviant integration of inferior frontal, parahippocampal and superior temporal brain areas. However, a direct link between dysfunctional connectivity and AVH has not yet been established. To determine whether hallucinations are indeed related to aberrant connectivity, AVH should be studied in isolation, for example in non-psychotic indi

A case of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma presenting with massive tumoral hemorrhage.

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma has been generally conceived to be in a benign nature, showing a relatively favorable prognosis. Apoplectic attack attributable by massive hemorrhage in this distinct form of the supratentorial glioma is an exceedingly rare event. A 61-year-old female presented with a sudden onset of generalized tonic--clonic convulsion. CT and MRI disclosed the presence of a tumor composing of massive intra-tumoral hemorrhage filling the cyst associated with mural nodule in the left frontotemporal lobe. At surgery, the subpial mass involving hematoma was well marginated and sligh…

Letter binding and invariant recognition of masked words: behavioral and neuroimaging evidence.

Fluent readers recognize visual words across changes in case and retinal location, while maintaining a high sensitivity to the arrangement of letters. To evaluate the automaticity and functional anatomy of invariant word recognition, we measured brain activity during subliminal masked priming. By preceding target words with an unrelated prime, a repeated prime, or an anagram made of the same letters, we separated letter-level and whole-word codes. By changing the case and the retinal location of primes and targets, we evaluated the invariance of those codes. Our results indicate that an invari

Varieties of alexia from fusiform, posterior inferior temporal and posterior occipital gyrus lesions.

Reading impairments of three alexia patients, two pure alexia and one alexia with agraphia, due to different lesions were examined quantitatively, using Kanji (Japanese morphogram) words, Kana (Japanese phonetic writing) words and Kana nonwords. Kana nonword reading was impaired in all three patients, suggesting that widespread areas in the affected occipital and occipitotemporal cortices were recruited in reading Kana characters (corresponding to European syllables). In addition, the findings in patient 1 (pure alexia for Kanji and Kana from a fusiform and lateral occipital gyri lesion) and p

[Parkinsonism-ALS-dementia complex: case report].

We are presenting a case of Parkinson-ALS-Dementia complex in 53 years old male. Outstanding bulbar signs with muscular atrophy of tongue, muscular atrophy of shoulder girdle together with massive fasciculations (myoclonus type descending from spinal cord) have been observed. Clear Parkinson's syndrome coexisted--bradykinesia, rigidity with cogwheel resistance, "masking" of the face, disturbances of body balance and significant vegetative signs. Moreover psychological testing has shown psycho-organic syndrome of frontal type, MRI scans proved the existence of slight brain general atrophy that

Dynamics of visual feature analysis and object-level processing in face versus letter-string perception.

Neurones in the human inferior occipitotemporal cortex respond to specific categories of images, such as numbers, letters and faces, within 150-200 ms. Here we identify the locus in time when stimulus-specific analysis emerges by comparing the dynamics of face and letter-string perception in the same 10 individuals. An ideal paradigm was provided by our previous study on letter-strings, in which noise-masking of stimuli revealed putative visual feature processing at 100 ms around the occipital midline followed by letter-string-specific activation at 150 ms in the left inferior occipitotemporal

Generators of visual evoked potentials for faces and eyes in the human brain as determined by dipole localization.

Human visual evoked potentials were recorded during presentation of photos of human and animal faces and various face features. Negative waves with approximate peak latencies of 165 msec (N170) were bilaterally recorded from the occipito-temporal regions. Mean peak latencies of the N170 were shorter for faces than eyes only. Analyses of amplitudes of evoked potentials indicated that the N170 elicited by faces reflected activity of a specific neural system which was insensitive to detailed differences among individual faces regardless of species, and consequently suggest that this system might

[Early manifestation of fronto-temporal dementia].

The term frontotemporal dementia is used to describe a primary degenerative form of dementia, which is characterized by typical clinical, neuropsychological, radiological and neuropathological features. Its onset is usually before the age of 65 years; manifestations before the age of 30 years have rarely been described. We report the case of a 22-year old man, who showed symptoms of behavioural disorder such as social retreat, lack of initiative, mental rigidity, progressive reduction of speech, and stereotyped behaviour. The neuropsychological examination revealed disorders of the executive f

PET reveals occipitotemporal pathway activation during elementary form perception in humans.

To define brain regions involved in feature extraction or elementary form perception, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) in subjects viewing two classes of achromatic textures. Textures composed of local features (e.g. extended contours and rectangular blocks) produced activation or increased rCBF along the occipitotemporal pathway relative to textures with the same mean luminance, contrast, and spatial-frequency content but lacking organized form elements or local features. Significant activation was observed in striate, extrastriate, lin

Nonlinear analysis of the EEG of schizophrenics with optimal embedding dimension.

We estimated the correlation dimensions of EEGs in patients with schizophrenia to investigate the dynamical properties underlying the EEG. We employed a new method, proposed by Kennel et al. (Kennel MB, Brown R, Abarbanel HDI. Determining embedding dimension for phase-space reconstruction using a geometrical construction. Phys Rev A 1992;45:3403-11), to calculate the correlation dimension D2. That method determined the proper minimum embedding dimension by looking at the behaviour of nearest neighbours under a change in the embedding dimension d from d to d + 1. We demonstrated that for limite

Face-specific responses from the human inferior occipito-temporal cortex.

Whole-head neuromagnetic responses were recorded from seven subjects to pictures of faces and to various control stimuli. Four subjects displayed signals specific to faces. The combination of functional information from magnetoencephalography and anatomical data from magnetic resonance images suggests that the face-specific activity was generated in the inferior occipitotemporal cortex. All four subjects showed the face-specific response in the right hemisphere, one of them also in the left. Our results, together with recent position emission tomography and lesion studies, suggest a right-hemi

Gaze related enhancement of hemispheric blood flow in a stroke patient.

OBJECTIVE: A patient with a right posterior cerebral artery territory infarction and a left superior quadrantanopia exhibited improvement on various visual tasks including Goldmann perimetry during extreme right gaze. The phenomenon was investigated by functional imaging of cerebral blood flow. METHODS: [(99m)Tc]HMPAO SPECT was carried out while the patient gazed to the right and to the left at an 8 Hz flash stimulus. RESULTS: When compared with left gaze, photic stimulation during right gaze was associated with an up to 39.8% increase in regional cerebral blood flow in the damaged right hem
