Risk factors for neurological complications in left-sided infective endocarditis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neurological complications following infective endocarditis (IE) directly contribute to long-term morbidity. We examined the risk factors for different neurological complications of left-sided IE. METHODS: Using a database of consecutive adults admitted to a health system with left-sided IE from 2015 to 2019, the frequency of cerebral infarcts, intraparenchymal hemorrhage, cerebral microbleeds (CMB), mycotic aneurysm, and encephalopathy was determined. Variables with significant differences comparing each neurological complication (p < 0.1) were entered into regression

Psychosocial impact of COVID-19 among adults in the southeastern United States.

Limited research has explored the mental health impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the U.S., especially among Black and low-income Americans who are disproportionately affected by COVID-19. To address this gap in the literature, we investigated factors associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms during the pandemic. From October to December 2020, over 4400 participants in the Southern Community Cohort Study (SCCS) completed a survey about the impact of the pandemic. The SCCS primarily enrolled adults with low income in 12 southeastern states. We used polytomous unconditional

Daily iron intake and BMI for age but not for daily tannin intake increase hemoglobin levels in young females at Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, Indonesia.

Introduction: Prevalence of anemia among young women in Indonesia has been seen to increase in the last five years. This situation indicates that this nutritional disorder looks like an iceberg phenomenon. Daily consumption of vegetables containing foods is recommended for prevention of non-communicable diseases including anemia. These foods contain not only ferric ions but also other natural compounds. Aim: To analyse the relationship of daily intake of micronutrients and polyphenols with hemoglobin levels in young females. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 117 young…

The impact of climate change and eutrophication on phosphorus forms in sediment: Results from a long-term lake mesocosm experiment.

Characteristics of bottom sediments in lake mesocosms 11 years after starting the experiment were studied in order to determine the effects of nutrient loading, temperature increase and vegetation type on concentration and vertical distribution of phosphorus (P) forms. The experimental setup consisted of 24 outdoor flow-through mesocosms with two nutrient treatments - low (L) and high (H) and 3 temperature levels - ambient (T0), heated by 2-4 °C (T1) and 3-6 °C (T2) in four replicates. Thickness of the organic sediment was measured and the sediment analysed for dry weight, organic matter, and

Protective effects of di-caffeoylquinic acids from Artemisia selengensis Turcz leaves against monosodium urate-induced inflammation via the modulation of NLRP3 inflammasome and Nrf2 signaling pathway in THP-1 macrophages.

Artemisia selengensis Turcz (AST) as a common vegetable is rich in di-caffeoylquinic acids (di-CQAs) and has been reported to possess multiple health benefits. However, whether di-CQAs from AST leaf extracts (ASTE) could alleviate gout inflammation is still unknown. Herein, this study explored the inhibitory mechanism of ASTE on gout inflammation in THP-1 macrophages. Results suggested that ASTE suppressed the secretion and mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-18, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α. Pretreatment with ASTE inhibited lipopolysacchar

Differences in Unfavorable Lifestyle Changes during the COVID-19 Pandemic between People with and without Disabilities in Finland: Psychological Distress as a Mediator.

We investigated whether people with disabilities-cognition, vision, hearing, mobility, or at least one of these disabilities-report more COVID-19-related negative lifestyle changes than those without disabilities, and whether psychological distress (MHI-5) mediates the association between disabilities and negative lifestyle changes. Information about COVID-related lifestyle changes among people with disabilities is scarce. We analyzed population-based data from the 2020 FinSote survey carried out between September 2020 and February 2021 in Finland (n = 22,165, aged 20+). Logistic regressions w

Evaluating the efficacy of various traps in catching tsetse flies at Nech Sar and Maze National Parks, Southwestern Ethiopia: An Implication for Trypanosoma Vector Control.

Tsetse flies are the vector of protozoan parasite of the genus Trypanosoma, the causative agent of human African sleeping sickness and animal trypanosomiasis. Traps such as Nguruman (NGU), biconical and sticky traps are in use for tsetse flies sampling and monitoring. However, there is no evidence regarding their comparative efficiency in catching flies using olfactory cues. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of different types of traps in catching tsetse flies at Nech Sar and Maze National Parks, Southwestern Ethiopia. The study was done for six consecutive months f

Foreign Bodies in Sinonasal Tissues: A Potential Pitfall yet a Hint to Oroantral Fistulas.

Foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus are infrequent findings with various organic and inorganic materials have been reported. Most are iatrogenic due to abnormal communications between the oral cavity and the sinus cavity, predominantly secondary to dental and oral procedures. Oroantral fistulas might be asymptomatic incidental findings or may present with sinusitis-related symptoms. Even though oroantral fistulas are frequently encountered iatrogenic complications, most studies focused on radiologic findings and surgical closure procedures. A few cases reported the histopathologic findings o

Impact of septic cerebral embolism on prognosis and therapeutic strategies of infective endocarditis: a retrospective study in a surgical centre.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis still has high mortality and invalidating complications, such as cerebral embolism. The best strategies to prevent and manage neurologic complications remain uncertain. This study aimed to identify predictors of cerebral septic embolism and evaluate the role of surgery in these patients in a real-world surgical centre. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 551 consecutive patients admitted to our department with a definite diagnosis of non-device-related infective endocarditis; of these, 126 (23%) presented a neurologic complication. RESULTS: Cerebral emboli

Towards a Bioactive Food Packaging: Poly(Lactic Acid) Surface Functionalized by Chitosan Coating Embedding Clove and Argan Oils.

Here we introduce a new method aiming the immobilization of bioactive principles onto polymeric substrates, combining a surface activation and emulsion entrapment approach. Natural products with antimicrobial/antioxidant properties (essential oil from Syzygium aromaticum-clove and vegetal oil from Argania spinosa L-argan) were stabilized in emulsions with chitosan, a natural biodegradable polymer that has antimicrobial activity. The emulsions were laid on poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a synthetic biodegradable plastic from renewable resources, which was previously activated by plasma treatment. Bio

Pharmacogenetic excitation of the median raphe region affects social and depressive-like behavior and core body temperature in male mice.

AIMS: Median raphe region (MRR) is an important bottom-up regulatory center for various behaviors as well as vegetative functions, but detailed descriptions and links between the two are still largely unexplored. METHODS: Pharmacogenetics was used to study the role of MRR in social (sociability, social interaction, resident intruder test) and emotional behavior (forced swim test) parallel with some vegetative changes (biotelemetry: core body temperature). Additionally, to validate pharmacogenetics, the effect of clozapine-N-oxide (CNO), the ligand of the artificial receptor, was studied by me

A Rare Entity-Percutaneous Lead Extraction in a Very Late Onset Pacemaker Endocarditis: Case Report and Review of Literature.

The number of infections related to cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has increased as the number of devices implanted around the world has grown exponentially in recent years. CIED complications can sometimes be difficult to diagnose and manage, as in the case of lead-related infective endocarditis. We present the case of a 48-year-old male diagnosed with Staphylococcus aureus device-related infective endocarditis, 12 years after the implant of a single chamber pacemaker. A recent history of the patient includes two urinary catheterizations due to obstructive uropathy in the cont

A dengue outbreak in a rural community in Northern Coastal Ecuador: An analysis using unmanned aerial vehicle mapping.

Dengue is recognized as a major health issue in large urban tropical cities but is also observed in rural areas. In these environments, physical characteristics of the landscape and sociodemographic factors may influence vector populations at small geographic scales, while prior immunity to the four dengue virus serotypes affects incidence. In 2019, a rural northwestern Ecuadorian community, only accessible by river, experienced a dengue outbreak. The village is 2-3 hours by boat away from the nearest population center and comprises both Afro-Ecuadorian and Indigenous Chachi households. We use

Timescale and colony-dependent relationships between environmental conditions and plasma oxidative markers in a long-lived bat species.

To increase the applicability and success of physiological approaches in conservation plans, conservation physiology should be based on ecologically relevant relationships between physiological markers and environmental variation that can only be obtained from wild populations. Given their integrative and multifaceted aspects, markers of oxidative status have recently been considered in conservation physiology, but still need to be validated across environmental conditions and locations. Here, we examined whether inter-annual variation in two oxidative markers, plasma antioxidant capacity and

A holistic model to assess risk factors of fasciolosis in Ankole cattle.

In recent decades, remote sensing (RS) technology and geographical information systems (GIS) were increasingly used as tools for epidemiological studies and the control of zoonotic diseases. Fasciolosis, a zoonotic disease caused by a trematode parasite (Fasciola spp.), is a good candidate for the application of RS and GIS in epidemiology because it is strongly influenced by the environment, i.e. the habitat of the intermediate host. In this study, we examined variables which may increase the fasciolosis risk of Ankole cattle in the degraded and overgrazed Mutara rangelands of north-eastern Rw

Comparative transcriptome analyses provide novel insights into etiolated shoot development of walnut (Juglans regia L.).

In general, genes promoting IAA, CTK GA and ethylene biosynthesis were upregulated, while genes participating in ABA, chlorophyll and starch biosynthesis pathways performed opposite tendency during etiolation. Etiolation as a method for rejuvenation plays an important role in the vegetative propagation of woody plants. However, the molecular mechanism of etiolated shoot development remains unclear. In this study, we investigated changes at different etiolation stages of Juglans regia. The histology and transcriptome of J. regia were analysed using etiolated stems, which were treated in darknes
