Cholestyramine resin combines with bile acids preventing their reabsorption from the small bowel, leading to a reduction in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. While rarely clinically significant, in some cases this can lead to vitamin K related coagulopathy. We present a case of a 57-year-old female with a profound vitamin K deficiency refractory to concomitant oral vitamin K supplementation in the setting of ongoing cholestyramine administration.

The etiology of schizophrenia remains poorly understood. Although certain risk factors have been identified, effective preventive measures are still lacking. This study investigates potential preventive methods while focusing on the role of vitamin D and its status. The role of malnutrition in schizophrenia risk was first identified in studies on the Dutch Hunger Winter. Vitamin D deficiency was hypothesized as a contributing factor shortly thereafter. This review aims to explore the correlations between vitamin D deficiency at various life stages (maternal, neonatal, adult) and schizophrenia

This extensive review delves into the complex relationship between prolonged use of metformin and the possible emergence of vitamin B12 deficiency (VB12D) in diabetic patients. Metformin, a pivotal element in diabetes management, is constantly linked with decreased absorption of vitamin B12, prompting concerns about the enduring consequences of this interaction. The review systematically amalgamates current evidence, elucidating the prevalence, mechanisms, and clinical ramifications of VB12D induced by consistent consumption of metformin. Exploring the different pathways through which metformi

Vitamin K refers to a group of lipid-soluble vitamins that exist in two natural isoforms; phylloquinone (PK, vitamin K1) and menaquinones (MKs, vitamin K2). Phylloquinone, the primary dietary source, is found abundantly in green vegetables and plant oils. Menaquinones (MK-4 through MK-13) are synthesized by anaerobic bacteria and may be obtained through the diet from fermented foods and animal products (e.g., meats, dairy and eggs). Originally recognized for its role in blood coagulation, vitamin K is an essential cofactor for the posttranslational carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent proteins…

Background & objectives Age-related renal impairment presents a significant challenge in contemporary clinical practice. Cellular senescence and oxidative stress are the key contributors to chronic kidney disease (CKD) during aging. Senescence is triggered by advanced glycation end products (AGEs), hyperphosphatemia, and higher glucose levels, which lead to renal dysfunction by inducing inflammation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, fibrosis, and apoptosis. Further, vitamin B12 is known to influence biological ageing and has been suggested to improve kidney function in the elderly; however,

OBJECTIVE: Although Vitamin-D (VD) deficiency in pregnancy continues to be an important public health problem, the effects of VD on fetal outcomes are not clear. VD can show its effects at the feto-maternal junction via nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB). This study was planned to determine the effect of changes in serum VD levels on amniotic fluid NF-kB levels.
METHODS: Participants were selected among patients who applied to Samsun Medikalpark Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics outpatient clinic between November 1, 2022 and November 1, 2023. Sixty patients whose serum VD measurements were performed

BACKGROUND: Autophagy is the primary catabolic process responsible for degrading intracellular components and potentially harmful cytosolic entities by delivering them to lysosomes. Notably, this mechanism is crucial for controlling intracellular pathogens, with significant implications for both innate and adaptive immunity. In the context of HIV-1 infection, emerging evidence suggests that autophagy contributes to immune responses against the virus. Various compounds can modulate autophagy, among which vitamin D₃ is particularly effective due to its ability to prevent inflammation and slow HI

BACKGROUND/AIM: Two retrospective studies of prospective cohorts showed doubled odds of birth asphyxia among women with low plasma vitamin D levels, and another study reported a four-fold increased risk of stillbirth. It was not known whether this was related to low sun exposure or to insufficient vitamin D per se. We aimed to assess if it was due to vitamin D status.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed the incidence of stillbirth in relation to national vitamin D status for all pregnancies in Finland and Sweden between 1994 and 2021 (n >4.3 million). Due to 50% of the population having low pla

Vitamins are vital micronutrients that play critical roles in human growth and development. However, vitamins are highly susceptible to degradation by light, heat, oxygen, and interactions with other food components during processing and storage. Additionally, insufficient intake or malabsorption can lead to vitamin deficiencies, resulting in various diseases. Since the human body cannot synthesize most vitamins, they must be sourced through diet or supplementation. Therefore, vitamin analysis is critical for meeting human nutritional needs and ensuring quality control. In recent years, signif…

BACKGROUND: Twenty-five-hydroxyvitamin D, used to assess vitamin status, is the primary circulating form of vitamin D having a half-life measured in weeks, and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D is the active metabolite having a half-life measured in hours. Although there has been a preponderance of research on the roles of the active metabolite in health, there remains a limited understanding of the transport of the true vitamin forms, ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol.
OBJECTIVE: This study proposes an alternative mechanism for vitamin D transport, hypothesizing that high-density lipoprotein (HDL) fa

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk; it poses a significant global health challenge. The multifactorial pathogenesis of osteoporosis involves complex interactions between genetic factors and vitamin D metabolism, particularly involving key genes such as the vitamin D receptor (VDR), CYP27B1 and CYP24A1. Polymorphisms in these genes, including FokI, BsmI, TaqI and ApaI in the VDR gene, have been associated with variations in BMD, fracture susceptibility and differential responses to vitamin D supplementation

Lumbar disc degeneration (LDD) is a common musculoskeletal disorder that leads to chronic pain and functional impairment. Recent studies have suggested that the vitamin D receptor (VDR) plays a key part in regulating matrix metabolism, inflammation, and apoptosis in intervertebral discs (IVDs). The objective of this study was to examine cytokine expression and DNA methylation status of the VDR gene in blood leukocytes and lumbar disc tissues from patients with varying degrees of LDD severity. We aimed to explore correlations between VDR expression, methylation status, and clinical parameters s

Doxorubicin is used and highly effective chemotherapeutic agent; however, its clinical utility remains limited by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, presenting a significant challenge in cancer management. Growing preclinical research and clinical evidence suggest that the antioxidant vitamin C (ascorbic acid) may confer cardioprotective effects against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. In this review, both preclinical and clinical research has been synthesized to assess the potential role of vitamin C in mitigating doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity. Preclinical data have routinely indicated th
