Antifouling paints containing various chemical antifoulants are applied to prevent the attachment of marine organisms on submerged structures. However, these compounds can be released into the marine environment and adversely affect non-target marine species. This study compared the toxic effects of copper sulfate (CuSO₄), 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (DCOIT), and ECONEA alone and in combination on the periphytic diatom Navicula sp. and the planktonic diatom Skeletonema costatum. The 72 h EC50 values revealed a toxicity order of DCOIT>ECONEA>CuSO4. For Navicula sp., EC50 values

While dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) is traditionally considered a crucial precursor of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) like dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN), the present study hypothesizes that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and nitrogen-free organic matter (NFOM) can also serve as important precursors of DCAN. To validate this hypothesis, this study compared the DCAN yields from DIN coupled with NFOM versus those from DON during the ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process. Under identical carbon, nitrogen, and chlorine dosage conditions, the levels of DCAN formation followed the orde

Bioelectrochemical sensors often exhibit non-additive responses in mixed-toxicity matrices and, more importantly, lack a quantitative linkage between fast electrode-level signals and downstream process performance. Here, we develop a cascaded prediction framework that uses a S. oneidensis MR-1 electroactive biofilm sensor to translate rapid bioelectrochemical perturbations into activated-sludge inhibition indicators. A multimodal response feature space was constructed from cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and chronoamperometry (I-t) to characterize mixture-depende

Amphibians serve a central role in food webs and provide a link between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Because of their dependence on water, amphibians are susceptible to legacy and emerging contaminants. We investigated mercury (Hg) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in wild populations of two amphibian species-the green frog (Lithobates clamitans) and the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus)-which exhibit different life histories. We evaluated whether proximity to PFAS point source (State Superfund site) affected PFAS exposures in amphibians and assessed length,

Molybdenum (Mo), a vital metallic element for the growth of flora and fauna, holds considerable commercial significance. However, research on Mo toxicity and its bioavailability remains limited. This study exploited the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans to examine the biological toxicity of Mo exposure in aquatic environments. By simulating environmental systems, the influence of fulvic acid (FA) on the bioavailability of Mo was investigated. The EquRay (Equilibrium Partitioning Ray) method was utilized to develop a binary mixed exposure system, exposing nematodes to a combination of FA an

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) plays a critical role in the photochemical transformation of emerging contaminants in aquatic systems. However, the source-dependent molecular composition of DBC and its mechanistic influence on contaminant photodegradation remain poorly understood. Here, we characterize the optical properties and molecular structure of DBC derived from five crop straws and evaluate their effects on the photodegradation of antiviral drug abacavir. Results demonstrate that light absorption capacity of five DBC follows the order: DBCrice>DBCpeanut>DBCsorghum>DBCwheat>DBCbamboo (DBCX,

Urban sewer systems act as incubators for mercury-methylating (hgcA) microorganisms, yet how sulfate-an abundant and variable sewage constituent-drives this process remains unclear. Here, we combined controlled bioreactor experiments, batch incubations, and genome-resolved metagenomics to demonstrate that Hg methylation potential follows a nonlinear, bell-shaped response to sulfate loading. The MeHg production rate peaked at moderate sulfate concentrations (75-150 mg/L), reaching levels 1.2-5.4 times higher than those observed under low sulfate conditions (6-30 mg/L). This enhancement arose fr

Photovoltaic wastewater often contains hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), fluoride (F-), and poorly biodegradable polyethylene glycol (PEG), and this complex pollution poses a severe challenge to biological denitrification systems. This study focused on strain LX-6 (Acinetobacter sp.), which possesses both heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HNAD) and microbial-induced calcium precipitation (MICP) capabilities, to systematically investigate the inhibitory effects of Cr(VI) on denitrification and mineralization and to elucidate the mechanism by which PEG alleviates Cr(VI) stress thr

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the major form of mercury (Hg) that poses risks to humans and wildlife. Dimethylmercury (DMHg) is the most toxic organic mercury compound, and it plays an important role in the cycling of MeHg in the ocean. However, there is a lack of systematic review on DMHg in the marine environments. This review was divided into six sections: (i) detection of DMHg in marine environments, (ii) distribution of DMHg in marine environments and its influencing factors, (iii) the exchange fluxes of DMHg at the sea-air interface, (iv) potential formation pathways of DMHg in the ocean, (v)

The combined ecological risks of microplastics and antibiotics in aquatic systems remain poorly understood, particularly regarding how functionalized polystyrene microplastics influence macrolide antibiotic toxicity. This study investigates the toxic effects and mechanisms of carboxyl-modified and amino-modified polystyrene microplastics (PS-COOH, PS-NH2) combined with macrolide antibiotics (Erythromycin, Roxithromycin, Azithromycin) to support ecological risk assessment of co-exposure. Results show that PS-NH2 was more toxic than plain PS or PS-COOH. At environmental concentrations (0.01 mg/L

While ecotoxicology has traditionally focused on impacts to reproduction and mortality, sublethal effects on behavior can also have important consequences that affect toxicity risk. Mercury is a potent neurotoxicant with well-documented effects on vertebrate behavior, although behavioral toxicity to invertebrates is understudied. Over a series of experiments, we assessed how a gradient of dietary methylmercury exposure influenced behavioral and physiological endpoints in dragonfly larvae, a widely used mercury biosentinel. Mercury exposure induced suboptimal behaviors in an artificially ideal

Clopyralid is among the most widely used herbicides worldwide. Discharging clopyralid-contaminated water into the environment can adversely affect human health and ecosystems. Research on the biological treatment of clopyralid-laden wastewater is crucial for enhancing process performance and preventing environmental contamination. This study investigates the biodegradation of clopyralid by an activated sludge (AS) culture to clarify its microbial degradation and inhibition kinetics. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of clopyralid on isolated AS microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) was examined

Marine bivalves often face heavy metal stress, yet we still lack of high-resolution way to observe the metal pollution status in soft tissue. This study provides the first high-resolution spatial mapping of cadmium (Cd) and associated heavy metals in marine environmental monitor Mytilus galloprovincialis, revealing distinct organ- and cell-specific accumulation, with the digestive gland, especially digestive cells, being the primary site of Cd uptake. Cd co-localizes with several metals, including calcium, chromium, copper, and zinc, suggesting shared uptake pathways and potential synergistic

Pesticide transport from agricultural fields to surface waters is a major environmental concern, and reliable exposure assessments require models that capture the major transport pathways. While the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT+) is widely used for landscape-scale pesticide modeling, it lacks a process-based representation of spray drift, which can contribute substantially to surface water contamination. The newly developed Droplet and Atmospheric Dispersion drift (DAD-drift) model provides a mechanistic framework for estimating spray drift deposition under realistic field conditions.

Xanthates are widely used collectors in sulfide ore flotation, but pose ecological risks due to their toxicity and the releasing of carbon disulfide (CS2). This study systematically investigated the biodegradation of three representative xanthates-potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), potassium butyl xanthate (PBX), and potassium isopropyl xanthate (PIX)-in an oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor (O2-MBfR). The O2-MBfR achieved over 98 % removal of all xanthates across surface loadings up to 6000 mg-COD/m2·d, with corresponding COD removals of 62-90 %. While PIX exhibited slightly lower COD removal

Reductive remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) is often limited by low utilization of interfacial atomic hydrogen (H*) and poor pathway control in complex groundwater matrices. Here, a noble-metal-free Fe(OH)2/nitrogen-doped graphene (Fe(OH)2/NG) composite is developed to regulate H* generated in-situ via the Schikorr reaction and thereby steer TCE transformation pathways. By stabilizing and buffering the in-situ generated H*, the reaction network of TCE is effectively shifted from an acetylene-dominated route to an ethylene-dominated hydrodechlorination network, with ethylene formed predomi

Pharmaceutical residues persist across wastewater, surface water, sediments, sludge, and reuse systems, creating temporally variable mixtures that are incompletely captured by episodic monitoring and unevenly removed by conventional treatment. This critical review evaluates nanosensors and nanosorbents for pharmaceutical-pollution monitoring and control using matrix recovery, reference-method bias, assay time, breakthrough behavior, regeneration retention, leaching, and life-cycle burden as performance criteria. Nanosensors offer rapid, low-volume detection, but field evidence remains limited

Agricultural intensification has increased pesticide inputs into freshwater ecosystems worldwide, yet pesticide risk assessments still rely largely on toxicity data from standard Northern Hemisphere model organisms. This may limit the biogeographical representativeness of acute SSD-derived hazard benchmarks. We evaluated the acute toxicity of lambda-cyhalothrin and ammonium glufosinate using three native Pampean freshwater species: Hyalella curvispina, Boana pulchella, and Cnesterodon decemmaculatus. Acute toxicity values (96-h LC50) were integrated into Species Sensitivity Distributions (SSDs

Microplastic (MP) pollution has become a global aquatic environmental issue, yet its long-term toxic effects on aquatic organisms remain poorly understood. In this study, grass carps (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were subjected to thirty-week dietary exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) to systematically evaluate the effects on histology, immune signaling, and intestinal microbiota. Histopathological examination revealed that PS-MPs exposure induced focal necrosis, increased melanomacrophage centers, and sinusoidal congestion in the spleen, while the intestine exhibited villus fusion, di
